At the GE.

Buy for a low price, sell for a higher price.

Runescape's GE isn't very conducive to trading in the sense you mean. Still it can be done by just putting up buy orders that are less than the average price and selling at the average price or higher. And if you follow some trends you can get a few ideas like "buy during the week, sell on the weekend" (or sometimes the opposite). You can also go directly to the places people are doing things and buy stuff right off of them. They will usually go for a lower price if it means they don't have to leave... but this is usually pretty time intensive unless there are a lot of people running on high stocks (like say lobsters on Karamja).
In a more general sense I think a few economic principles, applied to your personal choices rather than some finicky global market, can make you a more efficient player (and for that matter a more efficient person):
The simple idea is to acquire things at less of a cost than selling them. When you do this, remember that "time" is a cost just like money is. Don't get too caught up in just the numbers with money, as your time is important too. Think of even the act of doing something to make money as an economic transaction, but instead of trading money for something you're trading time for something. Then think "what could I be doing with my time to make more money?" The fact that your time is limited means you need to choose how you use it wisely. For further reading on that idea look up "Opportunity Cost".
Now that said, Runescape (and indeed real-life) adds more complications. The most important one in RS is exp. Exp is a commodity that you acquire with time and/or money. While using your time to make money you're usually also enriching your character through exp, which may lead to more money per unit of time than before (if the skill is valuable in that way). An activity that doesn't make much (or even costs you) money may later allow you to make a great deal more. Think of your character's skills as an investment, with the idea being that they pay out later. In real-life this is pretty much the idea behind a post-secondary education: money and time spent now to make more money for your time later.
That should give you a few things to think about. Let it slowly sink in and it will start to change the way you see things. I should also note that I played a lot of EVE and it has done horrible things to me, including introduce economics to my daily life.
I just realised my membership runs out on the 14th, and I'm only free on 4 of those days. Any ideas on how to make 3+m in that time without spending 6 hours a day on the game? I found that buying herbs on the ge, and cleaning them used to be pretty effective

green dragons can be 1m an hour if you don't slack at all.
It worries me that sharks have been declining in price slightly every day.
Can someone lend me the weapon store key so I can finish shield of Arrav on old school?
God fucking damnit I hate puzzle boxes on clue scrolls

then getting a reward worth a total of about 30k
I havent played RS in years. But whenever I do log in, I like to follow people around and slap them with a rubber chicken.
Or become an egg in Lumbridge and watch people try to pick me up.

Get yourself a troll baby and feed him a coin, then place yourself at the GE so other people are standing over him, watch how many idiots try to pick him up.

I'm bent up about this because I had an egg ring on my account and it's not on it anymore. It's not at diango, and jagex support just says too bad whenever I send them a ticket. I know I did the 06 easter event too, since I have all the rewards from the other 06 holiday events.

I still prefer to name the troll baby 'my own dad'

I'm so salty the iron plateleg (g) slipped away, other wise it would've looked perfect as a set

well done
it was my childhood fantasy to wear a gold trimmed iron armor
seriously
I don't know about anyone else. but i kinda dislike RS's tendency to cave into fanon. you know, like how there's "there's a Kalphite Queen, how come there's no King?", logically maybe insect queens exist but Kings are more like specialized breeders....presumably with the heads devoured. same thing goes with the Penance Queen...apparently it was retconned and that she's basically a spawning unit created by Cacus; an Avernic demon.*
* Im aware that KK's only existed inside the Exiled Hive...maybe some sort of God hooberyjoobery (KQ head no longer mentions Zaros. meaning the Zaros' involvement with Scabaras might no longer be canon) but the extent of Sailor Earth can only go on for so long. i know RS07 probably is supposed to be more "fun", probably thinking too much on it. still quirky that there's more pets to have...even if most are ultra rare drops from bosses.

What I don't like is the constant pandering of game content to maxed/comped users. "OMG MOTHERLAOD MAW WILL MAKE MY CAPE DEVALUED SOMEHOW NERF EVERYTHING"

Meh, i like how they're expanding skills at prifddinas with things like combo potions, light creature familiars and possibly little things like Hunter. though it's iffy how Prifddinas is becoming some sort of global max guild; it's like they're trying hard to either pander to the older fans or to make the Elf Series one of the largest rewards for questers, despite having much less requirements than other similarly-lengthed series like the Mahjarrat quests.
Like sure, you have the Max Guild. but for some random reason, it has a portal that could potentially go to all sorts of minigames, teleport to dungeons and other places. no additional skill things. just houses an NPC you'll grind gold shattered hearts for 32 weeks in 26 skills (that'll become some sort of comp req 32 weeks after batch 2...or 1. they wasn't clear). there's also the issue of things like Crystal Pics/axes and Enhanced crystal weaponry. unless they can adjust existing things such as the Inferno Adze and the Imcando Pickaxe.
I can at least see the Axe being used with the Adze to Vulcanize it with a toggle. but Imcando is more fiddly due to requiring a Gilded Dragon Pick and a grandmaster quest in a long series, then hopping hundreds of worlds to hunt for geysers. would be awesome if people can trade Crystal picks/axes though; it would free up a lot of dragon equips, maybe either recharging with empty weapon seeds or used to "bind" it to a character.
But at the end of the day though, as a city, it does have a lot of things attached to it. the series' hardest point was MEP2. years down the line, chances are Jagex will be hesitant to make any skill updates due to the city's features existing. only then will questers show concern. Prifddinas may also have powercreep unintentionally due to more and more minigames coming out, assuming they still support the skill portal after release.
just got pk'ed at the green dragons near the bone yard. It was pretty funny because the I dropped a glory, two dragon bones and two dragon hides. So he probably made a profit of 5k because of all the runes he used, and I've been pissing him off about it via message for the last 20 minutes hahaha
What's the opinion on claws, specifically dragon claws. I've been debating on getting a pair to dual wield but I'm unsure if it would be a good choice over my current weapons, which are the abyssal whip and dragon halberd.
Physics homework and fly fishing at 1 in the morning :v:
It's gonna suck waking up tomorrow.
[editline]10th September 2014[/editline]
What should I be doing for 1-99?
I just reached level 30, like what's the best exp available? I'm not interested in profit just yet.

Trout/Salmon until you can do Barbarian fishing. C2 Fishing at 80/90 if you want even more XP/hour.
Fishing for profit is incredibly stupid. But if you really want to, Rocktails at 90+ are about 300K gp/hour and incredibly AFK.
I finally got around to making the slayer helmet, why the hell is the black mask so much?
I can understand it being an expensive part, but why almost two million? The parts to upgrade it are like 500k tops.

I just chalk it up to Cave Horrors being utterly crap monsters to fight. at least Strykewyrms presumably has nice drops to justify the inability to AFK their specs, whilst Cave Horror's droptables are really old. Would've suggested maybe it had something to do with uncharged masks having different prices than a fully charged mask, but the prices isn't that different.
Or maybe Melee is just more popular than Range/Mage. it's been popular even before EoC..Void? nerfed hell down. most targets that people used to fight primarily in 1 style might have changed in some way, or became crappy. like Monkey Skeletons being weak to Earth spells, combined with xp only on kills makes Chinchompas bad. also, the advent of Slayer Masks from TH probably has something to do with it, now everyone can lazily do tasks whilst tuning up fastish ones daily.
Is there accuracy penalty for doing magic in ranged/melee armor (or any other combination) in Old School like in RS3?
black masks are expensive because more people (by a large amount) do melee rather than mage or range because it only costs money once (no buying supplies)
Is there accuracy penalty for doing magic in ranged/melee armor (or any other combination) in Old School like in RS3?
yes, but the penalty tends to decrease with better melee armor sets
for instance a full set of dragon armor only has as -3 penalty to magic and ranged whereas iron armor decreases both by like a bajillion
