What's with the dreams you get from taking a lot of mutagen?
[sp]It tells you what mutation path you're on. "You dream of hunting" is for the beast path, etc[/sp]
Why not go out with a bang? When I decide my character has lasted his time, I will make a killdozer and go mach 10 through a town. I'm already saving up batteries for that time
My last character went out with a bang. I killed myself with a mininuke :v:
I did this one time when I used the console to complete my APC for a screenshot. I decided to see how far I could get into this bee hive I had spotted that was behind two forest tiles. With 4 V8 engines I was going in excess of 200 MPH. I plowed through both forest tiles, a tile and a half of the beehive, and would've kept going if it hadn't ruptured my gas tanks and caused all my fuel to leak out. Super super fun.
what would I read to figure out how to get vehicles? I feel like I always find broken ones, and this sounds awesome.

Oh jeeze, getting that big of a vehicle required days of playing. And I don't mean ingame. Most vehicles you find will need one of three things; either wheels, an engine, or fuel. My first vehicle is almost always an electric car that needs fuel, because they recharge themselves. Various cars spawn all over the place in the streets of towns, and most of them will be wrecked yes. If you're playing static, you can always find a jack, hacksaw and wrench to strip some tires off a different car. Replacing them with a different type - wide, motorcycle, small, normal, etc. - requires removal of the destroyed tire and welding of the new one, though. Size is irrelevant, you can replace 20' wide tires with 25' wides with just the jack and wrench.
I woke up one winter morning and it was snowing! So I decided to spend the day reading books until a break jumped through my window so I shot it in the face with my bow. Then I had to go repair that window. So I went outside and behold 50 fucking ants outside, at least 10 of them trying to eat my car for no apparent reason. So I went out there with 26 arrows and killed them all. Next day more ants came over to eat my car. What the fuck ants?
Also, you can use rotten meat to make jerky. I don't think it transfer rot because it stacks freshly made jerky with jerky make from rotten meat.

There's an ant hill nearby. If you kill the queen they stop spawning. There's also frequently pretty good loot in them, food especially. Ant eggs are really useful too.
Well the thing with the ant hill is that I want a reliable source of easy meat. What exactly can you do with ant eggs?
It's been a few versions since I wiped out one, but as I recall you can eat them raw and use them to make superglue. Probably a couple other things, too. They provide pretty good nutrition, although I think they give you a morale hit because ew.
You should have squirrels and such spawn all around you - mostly during the early hours of the day - if you're by a bunch of plains. Wolves, cougars, coyotes, deer and occasionally bears and moose will spawn as well. Even if you're living technically in a city, they still show up.
Yeah I just wiped them out pretty easily. I think the swarm came to me because I hung around their anthill and I have very smelly, so they probably tracked me down and attacked my truck because reasons. I walked up to the queen with a redhawk and headshot it for 200 damage. I could probably do as much with my bow :v:
Yeah, they're mainly only a threat if you don't have much armor penetration. With a reflex recurve, you should be able to handle the entire hill with field-point arrows.
I managed to craft the full survivor set and get insanely strong mutation so I'm just lugging around metal arrows. I've managed to even kill robots at medium range.

I took out an anthill with my fists alone (and a revolver to kill the queen, it took 6 shots at point blank if I remember right)
I almost lost my arms in the process from all of the blocking I was doing (karate)
Ugh. Metal arrows are the bane of my existence. I want to use them sooo bad, but the tiny damage increase over heavy wooden arrows coupled with the massive weight makes them so unfeasible. They were awesome before weight was redone, because they didn't tick weight up hardly at all. When weight was changed they became primarily useful for specific hard targets, like big robots or [sp]extra-dimensional enemies[/sp].
Really, give heavy wooden arrows a shot. Look at the stat differences, they're so much better for every day usage.
But muh +2 base dmg armor pierce and range.
I'll probably switch to heavy wooden arrows, but keep at least 10 metal arrows for close up headshots. Metal arrow headshots do as much damage as my Ganz Rustung headshots.
Also, it's strange that the wooden arrows have less range than the metal arrows, despite the huuuuuge weight difference.
And here I am using a .22 pistol :v:
Only got 150 cheap bullets left or so though, then I'm on to my 200 good ones, I'm basically skirmishing outside a small town trying to get some skills up

Actually it's the weight that would do it. The air wouldn't be able to affect it as easily, so it'd be able to fly farther.
I carry 40 heavy wooden arrows on me for average trips, plus occasionally some non-fletched field point arrows if I think I'm going to be fighting a lot of shit. I can carry back considerably more loot like that.

My issue with firearms has always been ammo. Bows don't do as much easy damage and they're generally slower firing or shorter range, but you can literally make them out of sticks, feathers and rocks. Smithing has helped ammo production for firearms, but I still swear by a reflex recurve and a few dozen arrows.
Yeah, I intend to get a bow at osme point, but this .22's really not doing me too badly. Sure it can take several shots, but ammo is relatively aplenty atm, one gun shop had 500 rounds or so, and it's quiet enough even without me making the supressor, since I'm still in the item hoarding mentality, dragging wheelbarrows / carts of loot back to my shelter.
After I'm out of .22, I should be ranged 3 or so, and will start training archery, or maybe move on that proprietary HK UCP or whatever, or another pistol I have.
You're going to hit diminishing returns before too long where you won't be good enough with the bow by the time you get around to it to make it worth it. You'll end up fighting more dangerous shit that you need the skill and higher level arrows/bows for. I've caught myself doing this with melee weapons a lot, especially if I get lucky and find something like a baseball bat or some type of sword.
There is throwing that's super easy to level and allows you to one shot enemies at 4 skill level.
Depends on what you're fighting. Arrows have the benefit of gaining stats from the launcher, as well as longer range. A reflex recurve firing heavy wooden arrows has something like a 15-20 tile range. It's not quite on par with heavy scoped rifle, but the ammo's cheaper. Armor penetration is important as well, plus arrows tend to be lighter than, say, javelins.
i've been getting random crashes everywhere lately, and it's really annoying. does this happen to anyone else and is there a fix?
I was thinking - maybe a random weapon generation system would be good for cataclysm? Just make stats of weapons vary in preset intervals.
Genned a new world, made a new character... and there's an armored car right outside the evac shelter.
Ooooooookay then :v:
Man those labs have some scary shit down there. No joke the lab I went to had it's 2nd floor down with just chambers of zombie hulks. One room had eldritch horrors in chambers, two which had broken out and quickly dispatched.

I haven't been in a lab since 0.6, they've gotten a lot more dangerous now apparently. I used to use them to grind tainted meat for mutagen since they would endlessly spawn down there

The labs got much more interesting too. They used to be just blocks of storage rooms with dissectors, rooms with bionics, rooms with limb tanks, living quaters and that's about it. Now there are some creepy things and some interesting places.
Would anyone happen to have a solution for playing the same save on 2 different computers? Both WinXP and connected through LAN. For now I only copy pasted the folders, but is there an auto synchronization option?

You can try dropbox for that. Install dropbox, put your cataclysm folder in the dropbox folder, wait for it to sync, then log in the same account from the other PC. After that all files will be synchronized.

I'm glad I'm not the only one getting these. I was off to a pretty good start, I managed to drink mutagen and get nothing but beneficial mutations, had a decent weapon, and then boom, the game just disappears. This is getting really annoying.

Do you have autosave turned on? I've had a streak of crashes that happen like almost after a save.
EDIT:
Godamnit. Made a char just for bashing stuff. Found a house with basement that has like a shitload of books and weapons.
