I tried ignoring acid rain with a raincoat.
It was the closest I've come to dying in a long time.

I haven't played this game in a bit. Since when was monster in-fighting added?
It hasn't been. That actually is a little weird come to think of it, I didn't think cougars had any flags that made them swipe at nearby targets.
Apparently animals just attack other animals sometimes? Like I mentioned not that long ago a wandering dog ripped a cat I had tamed to shreds. It then proceeded to just ignore me until it caught wind of a raccoon nearby. No, it was not a tame dog.
Need more Cataclysm stories! This thread is like short fiction gold/imagination porn for me, might have to cave and just learn how to play.
Serums are friggin amazing. Mutation sure became more fun.
I went and remasterd my valentines card i did a while ago

Did they make melee easier? I have 6 bashing and I can walk into towns during day with my battle axe, wearing 2 backpacks (Runner pack and a military pack), a toolbelt, an utiliy west, army pants and cargo pants and a trenchcoat (torso enc 5) kill all the zombies I meet and leave without taking significant damage.
Actually they made it indirectly harder in 0.A, due to the increased zombie HP. Proper timing and tactics can all but eliminate any damage from "normal" enemies.

Basically just playing him as an average joe character. No bionics, no mutations (hopefully), just going to find a bag of irradiated orange and get the hell to Savannah.
How does the dino-mod work? Do they pop in after a few days or is mine broken or something.

You should. It's totally worth it.
Yeah, it's really fun once you get the hang of it.
My advice is getting to know the advanced inventory management screen early, it makes sorting and suff so much easier.
Speaking of serums and such; is it smarter to follow a specific mutation branch, or just shooting up with whatever I can get my hands on?

To be honest mate, roguelikes in general aren't actually hat hard to learn and play, they just take a mindset swap. Hell, even Dwarf Fortress itself isn't actually that hard, though it's got a horrible UI to learn (and fortress mode arguably isn't a roguelike by virtue of not being like Rogue!).
Cataclysm is actually pretty easy to get the concepts of once you remember a few keys, although a few things are a tiny bit unintuitive. A bit of a pain to survive in for the first few times, but the actual controls are easy enough.
Thanks, I'll definitely give it a try. Reading some guides now.

Put this into your bookmarks: http://cdda.estilofusion.com/
It's a database with all the items and recipes taken directly from the game code, and as such is always up to date.

Why did no one tell me this existed before. That would have been immensely helpful for back when I started playing.

Then surely you haven't cast off all your mortal shackles yet!
[sp]I don't know why I have become some weird cult person, but I guess this is my life now :V[/sp]
So I just discovered the fifth "sheer drop down" basement in a house and thought "They can't all be lava rivers, can they? This must be a sewer or something". Long story short there goes my 19 day character.
Decided to make a military operator playthrough that missed his evac and has to rely on himself. Created a military character and there was a dead military squad right outside my evac shelter. Most atmospheric start ever.
Yeah I found one lava drop in a cave or something and that was it. Never again.
Is there a way to descend using a rope or something?
Probably intended to be able to use a long rope to do it, no idea if it's currently possible. I may make a test world designed around testing out features and theories like that, stuff that would make sense to be able to do. I know that you won't take falling damage if you have wings - avian ones, at least. I can't recall if insect wings remove falling damage.
I wish there were more deserted kind of things.
Like maybe you could have some towns that were bombed, have the grass grayish, the buildings would be black and burnt and only a few decomposed zombies are around. Would be a bit more atmospheric.
As I recall according to lore, the entire epidemic just suddenly hit all at once. [sp]It was of course developed in the labs you can raid, but it and the dimensional shit just basically exploded together at the same time. There was a fair amount of time for testing on blobs and some weaker forms of the virus, but the virus as it currently is just completely snowballed so fast they weren't able to contain it. It actually seeped into the groundwater and began infecting the populace; there's a gray area around whether everyone is actually infected or not, and that the human corpses you see are just people who were lucky or immune for some reason. Actually except for the 'mystical' enemies, like blobs, extra-dimensional stuff, and the fungal shit which is dimension-based, all of the shit you fight is because of the research done in those labs. The giant insects/spiders, zombies, Triffids, etc. are all because of these viruses they were making in the labs.[/sp]
At the same time though, this is all old lore. I'm not sure how much has been rewritten since then, as I don't know when the last time they actually updated ingame lore was. I'm hoping they get somebody set to work on it after they get their big features like NPCs and z-levels worked in.
[editline]25th March 2014[/editline]
Actually I'm not sure if that's not all Whales' old work, and if it is that's all from 0.3 at the latest. So yeah, that could all be completely bunk. I know at least some of it's changed since the last time it was updated, because [sp]the zombie virus wasn't supposed to affect animals[/sp].

Yeah, I recently read up on the lore in the wiki. Pretty interesting stuff.
It's like a stew of Half-life, Fallout, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R with a sprinkling of misc sci-fi/horror.

We all knew it was going to happen eventually, well eventually is now!
KA101 added a feature to build a downward staircase, which also creates a matching up staircase on the level below. Let's get Diggin!
