Static spawning is only for zombies. Its kinda nice that woodland creatures arent static. When you got that shelter in the middle of fuck, theres still some threat to things, wich is nice, also food source.
I wish static spawning happened for swamp creatures at the very least. I had a fantastic character going, and I was driving across the bridge with a car when the engine died on me because I went too fast. I got out and started walking, saw a dragonfly, fusion-cannoned him, and then an army came from behind it. I tried to turn around and go back but there were like 6 dermatiks and a dozen dragonflys behind me now. I got massacred. Thinking back, I should've just dove into the water and taken my chances. I just don't think swimming with three LAWs on my back and a fusion cannon arm would be very easy, but better than going out as easily as I did.
haha oh shit i found power armor in a surplus store now i found a LMOE shelter GG
Found this awesome farm with a mansion a few tiles away. Used wood I scavenged from the mansion to build spiked pits arround the farmhouse, everything going well. High survival skill pays off

And then you'll run out of food in the next four nearest towns. And then you won't have enough gas to get to a nearby town and back in time to sleep. And then you'll move your base or starve. A farming skill would be pretty awesome to see in 0.6. Building a self-sustainable outpost with revamped NPCs that actually work would be pretty fantastic.
farming would be awesome, but i hope they don't make the process easy
I dont know about you guys but a wolf keeps me fed for two days. So the farm is fine, he can even get clean water from the toilet. But thats no fun so i love exploring.
i once woke up with 3 bears outside my cabin food was no longer an issue after i ended them all with my usp

Im going to build a vehicle but first I need a better weapon. Crossbow is too slow to reload, but I guess it I raise my skill I might score constant headshots or some shit. The farm is so cool, there is a barn with a pulley system and metal doors were I can hide in case shit hits he fan. Im going to mod in smoked meat if its not in already. Also, you can put a 2x4 over a deep pit and cross it safely, then remove it back again.

That way, eventually, you'll kill all the animals nearby for food and be forced to move. If you leave them alone for a while they should have a way to breed, so a couple of weeks and you'll have more rabbits if you're careful. A mix of that and a type of farming skill that takes a lot of time would make staying in one spot viable with static-spawning creatures.
Damn longbows are nice, my character looks like rambo
The download link is down, can someone re-upload the latest version please?

So a wandering band of friendly manhacks appeared out of nowhere, and saved me in my time of need. I was booking it from this worm that followed me out of a mine, and suddenly these manhacks pop out of the woods and fillet the fuck out of that worm. Shortly after that, an NPC tries to kill me, and this time, about 5 times as many manhacks as before come out of the forest and attack him. He ends up releasing his own, and there is a manhack battle between like 30 of them. He lost, since he only had about 5 while there were about 25 friendly ones. Now they are just following me and killing everything in sight. [editline]4th June 2013[/editline] So it started raining acid, so I had to duck inside a nearby gas station and sleep there for the night. When I woke up, I saw this. [t]http://i.imgur.com/dfZjWgF.png[/t] My manhacks did a lot of worm chopping last night. [editline]4th June 2013[/editline] While the manhacks were preoccupied killing some worms, a graboid snuck past them and wrecked my shit. That was fun while it lasted. Only about 10 of those kills are mine.
So I start a character, head sneakily (I think i'm being sneaky anyway) to the store I need to get to. Before I am even there I have gained a giant horde and then am immediately fucked trying to do anything. Any tips?
I wish there was a crouch mode, or prone, or something to be more sneaky with other than just standing up and running around.
Ok, so I made it to a gun shop. Got myself a pistol and as soon as I got out the door 1000 zombies. I fought about 50 off and then ran outta ammo and died. This game is mean.
Guns are sometimes worse than melee weapons, You miss half the time if you don't put any skill in it, Even then a melee weapon can do more damage sometimes.

Any tips?
In the beginning, smash a locker in the evac shelter for a pipe as a starting weapon, or get a heavy stick and make it into a pointy stick (too lazy to launch it up and see which is better right now). Scavenge houses only on the very outer part of the towns. Try to avoid going in the streets. If you see more than one zombie, just run. The best way to get into locked houses early on is to stand on the side opposite of town and smash a window open. Then press * to open the construction menu and clear broken window with g. After that you can crawl through it and loot the house, then exit the same way. If a zombie hears the glass break, try to get it to come in through the window, then once it's in the window frame, wail on it, as it will be taking a speed decrease while in the window frame, giving you time for a few hits. You can do the same outside, if there is only one zombie, you can get it to walk onto a shrub then hit it once and back up and lure it onto another one. When you find your first fridge, smash it and take the rubber hose and metal. Once you get enough metal you can craft (press &) a spike and then make that into a knife spear for a decent weapon. In addition to this, if you take a heavy stick and the rubber hose from the fridge, you can create a slingshot. You can take two rocks to create pebbles for ammo, then practice your archery by just shooting squirrels and shit. Even a zombie, if you are faster than it, and can just kite it around shooting it every few turns. After doing this enough, you should have enough archery to make a longbow. Make that and some arrows and you can have even more stopping power than before. Important: You need 10 strength to use the longbow, so be sure to generate your character with that. If I think of any other advice I will post EDIT: Fridges only drop rubber hoses in the unstable nightly build, which I use because it has a bunch of neat changes and fixed things.
Important: You need 10 strength to use the longbow, so be sure to generate your character with that.
My character with only 8 STR can still fire it, but only with a range of 6. I sugest investing in survival, archery and maybe tailoring. So at the beginning of the game you can make a bow and easily find food. Tailoring will help in crafting clothes with the furs you collect. If you invest 1 point in mechanics you can smash a shelf inside the evac shelter and use a rock to turn it into a crowbar, it lets you pry open locked doors.
So I walk into a town and there are no zombies what so ever. What I didn't notice though was that is was full of black widows, and when I say full.
Ouch. Apparently they tweeted that they're going to do a kickstarter, to which Whales replied: @CataclysmDDA hey man, a heads-up would've been kinda cool, like maybe get me involved? I'm most likely fine with this anyways but y'know seems like sort of a dick move on their part.
I'd be fine with them doing a kickstarter, but to have not asked Whales before is a huge dick move. I mean, they're planning on doing a fundraiser to help them further another guys work, they should have at least asked him first. (and offer a fair cut of the earnings to him as the creator tbh)

If so, it takes a bit for the zombies to show up first, but they'll show up after a bit or if you make a lot of sound. I prefer static spawn as it's more dangerous/realistic (towns start full of zombies, zombies don't respawn so towns can be cleared out) [editline]6th June 2013[/editline]
My character with only 8 STR can still fire it, but only with a range of 6. Sure it helps you start off, but you can just go to the library and read books and save yourself the points.
I have it on static actually, which makes it even more odd.
I wouldn't mind paying for this on steam or something if it had a shitload of more features and stuff.
Holy cow I just derped. After making a fire I went into the crafting tab to cook my food, however I saw that I could make some more arrows so I went for it. Little did I know that it attempted to make arrows from the wood that was being used on the fire. I then proceeded to burn myself a lot.
So what's different in the unstable version in terms of features?

This game really needs some of the overly-specific stuff that Dwarf Fortress has. I mean, In DF you can impale a lion with the corpse of another lion. Let me pin a zombie to a wall with a spear. Let me pour gasoline on a cougar and light it on fire. Let me dismember limbs to have a zombie torso army that just sits in the middle of town. Let me kill a zombie by shoving a zombie kid down it's throat. I want to be a sick bastard, game. Let me. I'm already a winged tentacled slimy mutant with a cannon arm and a scorpion tail, lemme be dumber.
