Is there some sort of indication that they have triggered? I am literally getting no obvious feedback to if this style is doing anything or not :(. I'm going for Silat because the extra dodge seems to almost certainly work and it does feel as though I am better with it although that may well just be a placebo type thing.
Yeah, as Dreukrag mentioned, you'll see various attack messages.
Also, I think most of the style effects will show in the status window when active, like: "equipping" the Boxing style will give you Boxing status, and Footwork status will trigger when you move around.
You can examine them to see the effects.
Btw, Boxing seem to have really cool effects: [sp]Dex and Per boost damage, and Str decreases the damage taken when blocking, and the Footwork boost dodging when moving.[/sp]
Currently uppercutting everything with razorbar katars

I'm seriously not seeing any of these messages :(.
I'm on day 11 and have been spending most of the daytimes going through towns and clearing out all the zombies and I have not yet seen any sort of special attack at all. I'm using Silat with the monomolecular blade from the bionic which I am fairly sure is compatible (it says so in the JSON, anyway), and I haven't yet done anything out of the usual 'you gut the Zombie for 45 damage!'. I am fairly sure they have worked at some point because I do remember a previous character knocking enemies back on occasion but this time it doesn't seem to work. I will have to keep trying with it!
Good lord I keep dying at night stumbling into wolves, zombies or bees. The cold temperature at the beginning of spring doesn't help either. Any advice?
You should find a blanket and jacket in the evac shelter (provided you started there!), if you equip those only your head will get cold and you should be able to sleep. Remember to unequip them when you wake up though, or you'll miss all your attacks from the encumbrance. I don't usually venture out at night much, if it's not raining I might light a fire somewhere and read books until my character is tired enough to sleep. You can wait by pressing | if you're not tired and have absolutely nothing to do, but it may be worth setting a fire and reading/crafting to kill time. Also, with the blankets equipped you can sleep on the benches in the evac shelter!
Don't go out at night, and stack clothing as best you can without encumbering yourself. The three important areas to avoid encumbrance as best you can are feet, legs, and mouth. They all increase the cost to move, which makes everything related to enemies more dangerous.
Thanks, but how will I have to do raids into the city at the start?
Going in at day is dangerous because the whole city will go after me.

Not even the Silat status in the status window?
If not, I doubt the blade you're using is compatible.
As for the different attacks, earlier when there was only the unarmed styles (I think) you'd have to be a certain unarmed level to get access to them.
But now, most of those attacks (rapid strike, block, parry) are attached to melee weapons, so I'm not sure if weapon styles really have any such attacks in them, and if they're also level locked to the relevant skill (blunt, piercing, etc.).
By the way, I haven't played around with the Monomolecular blade much, but when you use it, does it not appear in your hand? If so you'd be able to examine it.
I suspect it probably don't have many attack variations.
I'm not sure about much of this, mostly just guessing.

This is probably where you are going wrong. Raiding cities in general will not end well unless you're really ready for it. I like to find a house on the edge of the city, smash a back window, clear it (press *, then z then the direction of the window) and sneak in. If you're lucky you won't alert any zombies, but at worst two or three might come your way. Take the stuff you need from the house and if you haven't got anything good maybe do next door or something. Don't go running into the city until you're really sure you're good enough to deal with it!
You can sometimes find mini towns that usually have a few houses and a petrol station which are good for earlygame looting.

Lol the blade only has the parry technique available. I feel stupid now!
Edit: I just died by not paying attention and holding the movement key down while a wasp stung me to death. Shitty way to go but teaches me a valid lesson! Decided to make a new world, it was getting boring pretty much playing in the same area all the time. Set the season length to 28 days and starting season to Winter so I can at least pretend it's Christmassy in the Cataclysm!
clear it (press *, then z then the direction of the window)
Pro tip, smashing a window twice auto clears it.
Also, city easy mode is picking every speed increasing trait at the start and just rushing through with a backpack.

If you sleep on or near a pile of clothing items, your character will automatically use them as necessary to keep warm.
After exploring a hazardous waste sarcophagus for a while my character started throwing up at random. Turns out they're radioactive, I also gained a bunch of mutations over the next few days. Towards the end the negative ones started to vanish and I ended up getting Phelloderm and Leaves with no negative ones! I also went through various stages of night vision but they were all lost as time went on. This game is fun.
I don't seem to last very long these days but I'm always exploring and stuff! Winter seems to be absolutely freezing, my character can barely even land a hit after a few hours of being outside. Will have to stack clothing and deal with the extra encumbrance, I guess!

I had heard about this but had it in my head that it didn't work. However it obviously does! Woohoo!

Has that shortcut been there forever? I've wasted a LOT of time if it has haha!

Since 0.A Kaufman I think.
Since 0.A Kaufman I think.
Ah I didn't touch much of 0.A and played a lot of it before that (and even more before it was DDA) so I am not aware of all these snazzy shortcuts!
Since 0.A Kaufman I think.
Only added afterwards. 0.B was the first time I encountered it.
Only added afterwards. 0.B was the first time I encountered it.
Maybe it was added in the experimentals between 0.A and 0.B because I'm pretty sure it worked before 0.B stable.

Honestly, that was the only way I knew to clear windows. I don't know what * even does off the top of my head

Construction menu. You used to have to clear broken glass out of windows through the construction menu, but they added in the ability to also clear it via smashing.

I literally just found out.
Holy shit, I just went into the basement of a house and there is a 21 tile wide wall of racks of ammo, and then another with a shitton of guns
[editline]26th December 2014[/editline]
maybe i can stop lugging around this packed LAW in fear of running out of ammo now
Holy shit, I just went into the basement of a house and there is a 21 tile wide wall of racks with guns and ammo on every single one
I had that happen to me last night, the house is literally across the street from a gun shop that had next to nothing in it too. Suspicious.
I transferred my character to a new world because I simply could not find any bloody science labs. New world seems to have more of them, but I'm also noticing a SHIT LOAD of giant ants everywhere which makes travelling somewhat annoying. Oh well, can't have it all. My character is actually approaching OP so I am tempted to start again and try something else, but for now I'll carry on. I seem to have hit a bit of a wall, there are enemies that my character can just kill instantly and there are enemies which deal massive damage to me with little chance of fighting back (teleport bionic and then run like hell to avoid), I'm not sure what I can do to get to the stage where bullets aren't as deadly as they are. I've got Regeneration so even after being reduced to almost 0 hp across the board I can quickly be back to full health after a single nights sleep.
So I actually have had my character survive his first two days successfully. Started in an LMOE shelter that was surrounded by giant ants (there was a ant hill two map tiles away..) so now I've been emptying houses and staying in a cabin in the woods. Hopefully I can repair my first car and actually get somewhere.
[editline]26th December 2014[/editline]
also what do you guys do with all your trash
Depends on what you're calling 'trash.' Nearly everything in the game is useful. Depending on where I'm living, I stack paper, wood, and lighters/matches in their own tiles. Rotten food goes outside, typically outside my kitchen window or just away from my area if I'm not in a house. Actual genuine trash gets its own pile, in a trash can if I've got one or just off to the side somewhere otherwise.

I throw all these alluminium cans and plastic bags in a pile.
Wanna fight me greenpeace.
Those are useful for crafting. Plastic bags less so, primarily for vacuum sealing food, but even still.
I've been throwing everything in the corner for now :v:
[editline]26th December 2014[/editline]
Also, experienced a shocker brute, goddamn he was tough
I'm way too lazy to organize my things, so I just throw everything I own on one tile and hope for the best.
Also, Labs are hard since the update. :/

Of course wolves had to appear right after I got absolutely wrecked by a Lab turret.
Even meth can't save me now.

How do I get my left arm back lol

You need an Arm Splint which you can make with fairly low survival skill I think (My guy has a survival of 3 and he can make it). Wear that for a few days and you'll eventually get your arm back with minimum HP for you to heal up :D)
As for the labs, my tree-man character lost both arms and a leg to a turret in a lab, thank god for regeneration and splints!

I just imagine a bunch of gory bloody meat jump away with one leg while dodging bullets.

How the hell do you survive losing both arms and a leg?
Also, "Pain 175 :D" made me laugh considering 175 is a ridiculously high number and it sounds like your character is ecstatic to be bleeding out in the road while being approached by wolves
[editline]27th December 2014[/editline]
Also as a ranged character I can't seem to find a decent way to fend off skeletons, especially dogs. What should I do? My chest encumbrance (I have two backpacks on) makes me miss every time I try to attack with melee
Take off your packs and hit it in the face. Drop shit until you're below your volume cap so you don't have an even bigger hit to effectiveness.
Sorry in advance if my constant questions about this game are annoying. I really don't want to lose this character :v:
oh bitch broke my automerge
Take off your packs and hit it in the face. Drop shit until you're below your volume cap so you don't have an even bigger hit to effectiveness.
Hm. I guess I was thinking too realistically :v:
As long as you don't overload yourself too bad or with a bunch of low volume items, it's really honestly the most effective method. You could carry a shotgun as a backup, but that's a lot of extra weight and volume if it's not a sawn-off, and it's incredibly loud. Plus the ammo issue.
Also keep in mind that skeletons and skeletal dogs can't bash. So if you can run inside a building and close the doors and windows before they can get to you, you're safe enough to either run out the back or dump extra shit.
[editline]26th December 2014[/editline]
Oh, and don't worry about the questions. It's like the DF thread; that's why we're here.
