Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead - FUCK NO SPORTING GOODS STORES

Let's revive this thread
Doing some exploring in my flatbed truck
Going 40mph on a road with trees on both sides
Road ends at a treatment plant
Turning truck aroun-
JABBERWOCK from where I came from
Frantically trying to turn around and face it as it sprints towards me, moving 3 tiles per tick
Line up, it's now maybe 15-20 tiles away
Set cruise control to 60mph and hope for the best
Hit the jabberwock head on doing almost 50mph
Do 392 damage
IT DOESN'T DIE
Jabberwock is so big that colliding with it causes my truck to skid out of control
I regain control but don't feel like dying today so I haul ass out of there
Once I was home I surveyed the damage, it made one of the frame pieces on the front of my truck go from green to red
I think that may be the closest this character has ever been to dying (besides maybe that bear that attacked me on the first day :v:)
im so shit at this game but i love it to bits
Went across a bridge for my first time a few minutes ago

and it was terrifying
(that's all blood and various bug guts)
I also had to squeeze in between a wrecked flatbed and and the railing with 0 clearance on each side
Something is seriously spooky in the science labs. I keep hearing voices and seeing weird ass shit. I'm not sure if its just hallucinations or what.
Could be a Mi-go, it mimics voice and its a lovecraftian monster, well i dont know about seeing shit, what do you mean by it
Think i can say i mastered the game, game became easy when you know all little things

I think at that point another hellspawn tearing you apart doesn't change much.

I guess. Brutes were bad enough but fucking bears
So I haven't played this game since like 2011 or something when Whales first released it. Are dual wielding fire axes/hatchets still good early?

You can dual wield weapons? Far as I know you can only wield one weapon at a time.
Ran into a sporting goods store with a Mac-10 and 100 rounds.
Once I got back to my base I saw a zombie I had killed earlier about and running.
I just realized that I killed like 30 zombies right next to the sporting goods store without butchering them, Leaving some gear I needed/couldn't get to.
Fuck.
Is it just me, or is static spawn basically just a "rush to the gun shop and win" mode? I'm finding it a bit easy, and I'm hoping it's just RNG luck.

I don't really see how you're able to rush to the gun shop, pick up the guns, reload them and kill every single zombie in the city before you're hit at all. Several of the zombies are alot faster than you like the dogs or the grabber zombies, so it seems quite hard to even get to the gun shop let alone fighting your way out of there again.
However, with a vehicle ... It's quite another story.
I'm not saying it's easy to clear out cities, it's just that once I get a decent gun it seems really easy, too easy, to kill my way to safety. I guess I may be used to the older, severely broken spawn system.
Which download for windows provides the ASCII tileset download? I cannot play roguelikes easily without them.

It's in the options i'm pretty sure, look in Graphics and Interface. There should be a way to disable it.
Holy shit, this game has a FP thread? Hello new hangout. I play the fuck out of DDA. Current character's set up pretty well in an apartment in a complex, got her APC up and running minus an engine and I think some extra plating. Reflex recurve bow, some ridiculous level of archery - and mechanics, but that's irrelevant - and enough strength to launch heavy wood arrows for 150+ damage headshots at 6 or so tiles. Cyborg'd the fuck out, too. Lucked out and got an Integrated Toolset, which makes vehicle work a thousand times easier.
Tons of loot stacked around the apartment, but I'm missing some of the mutations and CBMs I want. Plenty of guns, fair bit of ammo, a turret in the main hall, and the start of a full blown solar powered work station. Just eh... have to finish the spotlight grid. And probably need to build some walls to keep out the wildlife.

A friend of mine dug into the files and found out they don't start appearing until quite a while has passed, I think I recall her saying it was 40 days for first arrival, then it slowly kicks up as time goes on. I started seeing them sometime around the 20th day of Summer, which for me is about 50 days in. This was after I updated my game though, before I was running purely on the 0.8 stable.

There are faults now?

It depends on where your gun store is and what it spawns with, as well as what traits you spawn with. Parkour Expert, Fleet-Footed and Quick all combine to make something that can only be caught by zombie dogs, shockers, spitters and hulks - plus plenty of non-zombie stuff, of course. With proper use of the environment, only the zombie dogs are a particularly large problem.
If you just straight rush a gun shop you're taking a gigantic gamble. It's considerably safer to clear out a tiny sliver of a suburb to give yourself somewhere to sleep in relative peace while you work on self-sufficiency. Not to mention, all that noise from a shotgun or rifle is considerably more likely to attract something big you can't get away from - like a hulk - that'll ruin your day.

Since 0.3 in mines.

Is there a better way to do melee combat than just whacking the zombie with a two by four and hoping for the best?
Best way is to smash a window and dive inside when they're chasing you. Moving into a broken window costs a lot of movement points, plenty enough to usually let you kill them before they can attack.

Of course, you may attract zombies from elsewhere in the building or the other side of it; the same technique applies. If it gets really hairy, don't be afraid to smash through several buildings and dive through their windows until you get clear.
My guide to survival, destroy locker in starting area grab pipe (you would make crowbar out of it in pre 0.9 but pipe gives better stats now), walk to bush/window wait till enemy is in bush/window SMACK till it aint dead.
ADVANCED LESSON: for anything that is stronger then your avarage zombjoe (brutes, hulks, void fuckers etc) put down stick / plank , light it up, wait for thing to get on fire , WHOA ITS PERMASTUNNED BASH IT DED.

Lead it to a bush and most light weapons can get three hits off when they move through brush. Dogs are the fucking worst though because there's no way to stop them unless you get a lucky rock throw or somehow hit them.

Adding onto what Lijitsu said, shrubs give penalties as well. Lure them onto a shrub, hit twice, back off and repeat till dead

By chance I remembered this Cataclysm game I had quite some time ago. Checked to see if it updated and woah. I was 0.3 versions late. Also didn't expect a facepuch thread about this. What changed since 0.6? Like without spoilers if you can.

a lot
too much to list
They should add a Zoo building thing in some towns, like some animals would be dead from hunger, some could be still alive, some are zombified.
That way you would have to watch out for zombified tigers or gorillas or some shit.
Or hell, you could have a tame tiger or something. Maul zombies and zombears to death.
So I decided to start playing again.
Made a new world, spawn a new character.
The safehouse was surrounded by fucking zombies.
I made a run for the forest, killed them all off, and looted the safehouse; then I went to town.
There were shittons more zombies.
I proceeded to get anally raped but eventually prevailed and hid in some house for the night.
Holy fucking shit though, the fact that zombies now spawn literally on the safehouse is annoying
