My average character is a 12 int, and except for the really high level books all of the read times are manageable. I usually take Fast Reader since it's only 1 point, though.
What's the required Int to be able to read all books? Also, are any consumables able to boost Int?
Get 12 points on INT - 11 if you want to smoke/drink cofee - and you'll read all low and mid level books. For higher level books you can take one meth and two adrenaline shots. - Interesting update on the experimental branch, they changed the encumbrance system. Encumbrance values have increased but penalties occur only when you reach a multiple of 10 and the way you layer the clothes also affect it. The special crafted armor seems to be really OP, my char loadout: They also optimized the code for NPC mission, hope they'll add LUA support for that.

Reading time is calculated after each check, and those'll run out well before you're done with the book. It's tedious, but it's a lot better to just amass comestibles - which isn't in the slightest bit hard - and spend several days reading. The int boosters are far better spent on CBM installations, because those are instant.

Burning building usually is not that bad for me. Did the fire start right in the doorway and all the windows or something?
Burning building usually is not that bad for me. Did the fire start right in the doorway and all the windows or something?
No, but the building collapsed like 4 turns in. [editline]22nd March 2015[/editline] Uhg. 4th try, managed to get somewhere decent with a reasonable amount of starting tools and mats but I have no food and barely any water. I'm using the same build as above and it's doing me no favor. If I could just get out of that new start difficulty wall. I'm doing a difficult build I know, but still!
I use the very bad bad scenario with no skills, only raw stats for maximum lategame powergaming. So i know your pain of 20 shitty starts before getting a decent one and running into a shocker brute that promptly pulps you
Finally finished term so I have time to sink into this game again! 0.C is out, too which will hopefully be fun! Just got to remember to disable skill rust... Uh oh, my weapon is steadily getting damaged :(
You can repair it. Metal/plastic with a soldering iron, wood with a repair kit, firearms/bows with a firearm repair kit. You'll need spare material appropriate chunks, similar to repairing clothing. [editline]22nd March 2015[/editline] Although honestly with early bows it's way simpler and cheaper to just make a new one. [editline]22nd March 2015[/editline] Also you can reinforce - or make more accurate for bows/guns - weapons too, same as you can clothing. It improves their stats.
I've recently been enjoying creating characters starting with random names (from the game's chargen!) - I then come up with some sort of backstory for them and play as that character. Elmer Derbin - Janitor of a grocery store. Survived for a record 12 minutes before a zombie hulk beat the shit out of him Ralph Gomez - Blackbelt champion. Survived 22 days and was killed by a brute. Morgan Blake - Mechanic, survived for 8 days and died during a tragic car accident (totally forgot to slow down and hit a tree :( ) Snow 'Meow' - Furry/Otaku, currently been alive for 4 days and is questing to find a Katana to carve zombies with! Tailoring is well worth getting into. There's gear that's expensive but very efficient you can get in later levels, plus repairing your clothes so that they can A, take more damage before being destroyed and B, protect you more.
Is there a bug with 0.C that messes up some of the chargen stuff? I tried to take the 'Assault on Precinct Z' option and was spammed with errors and then spawned in the middle of nowhere. I then tried 'Ambush' and again it just spawned me in the middle of a field in Winter for some reason. Guess I'd better stick to just being an evacuee!

I had a sheltered start where the stairs drop down into an anthill :v: Obviously I stole some eggs, ate them, and commit suicide.
I love this game but my god I'm shit at it. Been trying really hard to get a character going and barely made it a week before dying to something. I think I've reached the stage where I skip the obvious stuff in an attempt to get back to where I was previously... Currently trying some sort of ninja character who has no decent weapon yet (Just a makeshift knife), but I always hit this wall where in order to get weapons I have to venture into a town which causes the zombies to just kill me! Aaargh!
Use bushes and broken windows to slow zombies down to either escape or get free hits. Learn their movement pattern and abuse the opening in it. Take Parkour Expert, Quick and/or Fleet Footed - Parkour Expert at the very least - and use its(their) bonuses to kite and slowly whittle down zombies you need to kill. If nothing else, you can smash in a window in the back or side of a house, run through and grab anything valuable, then book it.
Havent played since the release of 0.A or what was it called. Oh god everything is so diffrent. Also how do i into necromancy.
Get something that can cut, activate it, then use it on a corpse. At least as far as I've seen that's how you do it. Keep in mind you take a colossal morale hit for it and it's not instant. You still have to wait for it to stand back up.
What is the concrete mixer for? Is it possible to use it to pave a path?
Pretty sure it's a tool used to make concrete, which can be used to make walls. I haven't really fucked with varied construction much, mostly just to build a place for a proper bed.
I would pay good money if I could play this shit on my android goddamn
I would pay good money if I could play this shit on my android goddamn
There's this, but it's very outdated http://smf.cataclysmdda.com/index.php?topic=1786.0
Honestly, I feel like Cataclysm is my favorite rogue-like ever and I just figured out why. Most of the challenge that comes from the RNG in the game is the world generation. Other RNG aspects of the game (combat, medical, crafting, exploration) are usually done in such big volumes that even the biggest string of failure isn't likely to do you much harm in the long run, and can usually be countered with preparedness. Yeah, I think preparedness is the key here. You're able to counter the RNG by spending more time on other tasks. In FTL however, you can't be prepared because you constantly need to advance it's real easy to wipe if you fall on one bad encounter even if you were doing quite well. You need to take risks to win but it disproportionally punishes you if you fail, because you had no other choice. If you don't take risks, you can't beat the boss.
(FTL isn't really a Roguelike.) Truthfully, the BS-liteness of Cata coupled with the open world gameplay steers it away from the traditional Roguelike setting. It's similar to Dwarf Fortress; excluding occasionally genuinely being fucked by the RNG on spawns or intentionally choosing the wrong place to embark to, - super high or super low temps for example, which will kill your dwarves while they're outside - everything can be dealt with by planning and preparation. Unless you're one of the reckless players who intentionally tries to sabotage their fort because it's "fun," you can easily spend an extra hour thinking about the problem and a few more implementing the solution and probably negate any potential danger. The same holds true for Cataclysm: It might take you an extra week of ingame time, but it's probably worth it to make sure you've got enough fuel and supplies for that extended raid into a lab. [editline]29th March 2015[/editline] Although the true Roguelike spirit reflects the 'preparedness and preparation trumps RNG' ideal present in Cata/DF, the truth is sometimes you will just plain get fucked for no good reason.
Where's the best place to find datura seeds and what exactly does alpha mutagen give you?
Picking daturas. They grow randomly like other plants, as far as I can tell. If you use ASCII, I believe they use an asterisk (*). The Alpha path is fairly safe. Basically it just makes you superhuman. Improved stats, better hearing, less sleep. The negative traits are minimal, but one of which is on the opposite track of Fast Healer. So if you're big on Fast Healer like I am, it wouldn't be a good choice to stick to. It can give you Robust Genetics, though. For a super spoiler on each track and what it can give, you can go here. For just Alpha, here.
Where's the best place to find datura seeds and what exactly does alpha mutagen give you?
Alpha: [sp]Alpha mutagen leads you along the alpha line. It's a fairly safe and dull mutation line as they go, you get stat boosts, a little less sleep and such and the risks are low - nausea and such. Biggest reward is the "Prime 'Stat'" mutations (it gets all 4), but it is basically the only perk. The Prime 'Stat' basically changes stats based on what they are: 6 or less becomes 8 7 becomes 11 8-14 becomes 15 15+ becomes 18 It has huge benefits for an 8/8/8/8 character as you can become 15/15/15/15 but other than that there isn't much really.[/sp]
How does one make yarn? I need warmer socks. [editline]30th March 2015[/editline] Also I didn't realize fusion blaster removed an arm. If I remove the CBM will my arm be back to normal or is it gone forever?
Also I didn't realize fusion blaster removed an arm. If I remove the CBM will my arm be back to normal or is it gone forever?
Actually I don't remember. It might be gone forever, but you might be able to remove it and wear a cast for a while. That's something you'll have to dig around for yourself, that's not a CBM I do anything with except hide. [editline]30th March 2015[/editline] Could always dupe your save, remove the CBM, and check to see if you can get your arm back. [editline]30th March 2015[/editline] You might have to debug in Regeneration. I don't know if that'll do it either though.
