Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead - FUCK NO SPORTING GOODS STORES

[QUOTE=Bob_Namg;43003424]So I decided to start playing again.
Made a new world, spawn a new character.
The safehouse was surrounded by fucking zombies.
I made a run for the forest, killed them all off, and looted the safehouse; then I went to town.
There were shittons more zombies.
I proceeded to get anally raped but eventually prevailed and hid in some house for the night.
Holy fucking shit though, the fact that zombies now spawn literally on the safehouse is annoying[/QUOTE]
I think if you set 'Black Road' to False in world options, that doesn't happen.
we should make a world with a set character and see what happens with a group of people
would be pretty good
started a new character, and my starting evac shelter appeared to be right next to a swamp of some kind
i walked for a little bit, and ended up falling into a sinkhole
i didn't have a flashlight yet, so after stumbling around in the dark for forever I finally came across one
[img]http://i.imgur.com/X3U4yso.png[/img]
(brought the starting NPC down with me too heheheheh)
there's flashlights and food everywhere and no way out help
also just found a fancy jacqueshammer. guess i'll put it right next to the 5 jackhammers I found earlier

[editline]27th November 2013[/editline]
all of the entrances to the safehouses were blocked off, so I tried grabbing all of the dynamite I had lying around in a last ditch effort to break my way into them

FUCK

going to die but look at all of this shit

Is there any way to make the screen bigger? I can always see enemy names pop up in certain directions, but never see them on the screen until they're about 5 tiles away from me.

What the hell

Go into Options > Graphics and change the Viewport width and height there, then restart.
[editline]This is where the date would go.[/editline]
Is there a way to replant strawberry seeds?

Increase viewport width and height until it matches your screen and use a smaller tileset like this one (which also looks cool) [url]http://smf.cataclysmdda.com/index.php?topic=3901.0[/url].
edit: you will see everything your character sees except for a little bit of the top and the bottom if you have a widescreen.

52 width and 22 height is 1280x720
Can anyone explain how the autosave works?
I had a slasher thief character and after an hour of game it crashed.

Use a hoe outside on some grass or dirt to get tilled soil, then examine the tile.

It'll pop up with a thing like when you save counting out the data it's saved compared to how much there is total. 5 minutes or 30 turns is usually what I set it at, you won't lose much progress there. Can't help you much past that, it doesn't seem to always catch on it's been 5 minutes.

Ah okay. And autosave is gone on death?
wow
so upon seeing this thread, I load up the game to check out my previous character. I had managed to clear out a manor and secure it for my own. I also had the ability to claim all of the surrounding gun turrets to use as my own. Keep in mind the version I loaded up is kind of old so the zombies still infinitely spawn from town
so, my auto turrets are going to town fragging zombies on the outskirts (which in turn makes my game run SO horribly. there's hundreds of zombies outside) and so I go out to finish the job with some molotolvs. what happens? yep. I get gunned down by one of the auto turrets because I wasn't paying attention to where I was going and I walked in its line of fire as it was shooting
SO MAD

And that's how I met my first jabberwock in a shelter...
Yeah gabberhookers are pretty stronk, fuck that version that made them spawn in every 5th forest tile jesus christ how horrifying
When I see jabberwock i can't help but think of this.

We need a vorpal blade to combat the Jabberwockies.
[editline]28th November 2013[/editline]
by that I mean a submarine turned spaceship

kudos to anyone who gets that obscure literary reference.
[QUOTE=aurum481;43009053]Ah okay. And autosave is gone on death?[/QUOTE]
Yep! It functions exactly as a normal save; it's entirely there to combat crashes.
It's very easy to dispatch zombies if you have cutting weapons skill with a combat knife and you lure them on fences or windows. Even hunters are no big deal. But how do I deal with smokers?
Oh my god, these profession descriptions are the greatest thing ever.

throw shit and until you can make a bow.

The best way is to have something with a lot of blunt damage and no cutting - bat works good, mace works better - and a gas mask. A filter mask will also work, but you may end up still breathing in a bit of smoke. Make sure everything else around it is dead, then just stroll in and beat it to death. Preferably also have some pretty good armor.
Ranged weapons - excluding explosives, obviously - are a bad choice because they have that same thing skeletons do where shit can just go straight through them about 50% of the time. Slicing weapons can stick without a high strength and skill as well, which is why I prefer blunt weapons. You should always carry one around anyway for skeletons.
Anybody up for a succession game, like group of 3-4 people and everyone getting 5 days of survival.
Is it possible to sneak or something like that?
[editline]29th November 2013[/editline]
Also how do i start a car?
There's no actual sneaking, just stay as far away from stuff as you can. The longer you're in their line of sight, the more chance they have of seeing you as well.
As for cars, get in the seat with the controls in the same tile and use "^". While driving, use the same command to get a menu for toggling cruise control, toggling headlights (if applicable), toggling turrets (if applicable), or letting go of the controls so your movement controls your character again. You can also activate headlights and turrets from a different tile by using the "^" key and selecting an adjacent tile with vehicle controls.
What tools do i need to put/remove a engine from a car?
Welder wrench and 4 mech skill i think, press e on car and 'i' should show you everything you can build on a block.
I just had the best search for a hacksaw to make myself a pistol supressor.
Went to my city's garage but they didn't have any. Then I decided to explore a nearby subway. After burning through 400 batteries for the flashlight I found an exit in the next city. At 02:00... Barely saw anything but my screen was flashing with yellow '?'s. Dodging pools of acid, incoming zombies and shooting zombie puppies I managed to run away. Followed a road, killed a giant dragonfly and found a military bunker. Got in but all the shit was locked up. My electrohack didn't do shit either. :( It appeared there was a scientist complex nearby too. Entered it, butchered loads of zombies, drank a mutagen, got wrecked by a turret. But I found my coveted hacksaw! So now I am bleeding, and starving in that damn labyrinth with my silenced USP w/ 1 bullet left.
Then my game crashed. That autosave timing though.
Same tools needed for messing about with car wheels?
[editline]30th November 2013[/editline]
I found a repaired car and have gas but how to i refuel it?
To remove any item from a vehicle, you need a hacksaw and a wrench.
To replace (except wheels), repair, or add any item, you need a powered welder - 50 charges per weld - and a wrench.
To replace a wheel - if it's been destroyed - you need a wrench and a jack.
In order to add additional engines on a vehicle, you need increasing amounts of the Mechanics skill. Somewhere around 24 for 3 engines, I believe.
All of those items - including parts - can usually be found inside of garages. They can also be found in hardware stores occasionally, plus pawn shops carry literally almost anything. Pawn shops won't have stuff like mutagen or [sp]artifacts[/sp], but they can have other mundane stuff. Even higher-end mundane equipment like good firearms/melee weapons, army clothes, etc..

[QUOTE=DrugUnit;43021511]I found a repaired car and have gas but how to i refuel it?[/QUOTE]
Examine the car from outside, use the directional keys to go over the tile with the gas tank on it, and the 'refuel' option should light up. If you're close enough - within 1 tile while pumping - to a gas pump when you examine it, it'll ask if you want to refuel a vehicle.
SNIP: I'm retarded.
[editline]30th November 2013[/editline]
Also if clothes are ripped how are they affected?
They largely aren't, except eventually they'll be flat out destroyed. They go down to tattered eventually, which is the last level before they'll become destroyed. Even so, it's worth it to make sure everything's repaired up as far as it'll go. I've had my rain coat go from fully repaired to destroyed in ten turns before. Fucking hulks.
