What
They have been the best "oh shit I have no way of surviving that oh wait I have this thing" weapon ever.
Like, I used to alway keep a sawn off double barrel on me while travelling to kill shit like the overpowered, super fast, overbuffed, neigh unkillable creatures that are endemic to this clusterfuck of an overgrown mod.
I used to find that firing one to deal with random moose attacks would simply lead to hundreds of zombies swarming me and bringing my run to an end.
When i played first time shotguns were my love. Until i got a proper rifle. Even then shotguns akin to a Saiga-12 and such were good as FUCK when exploring houses and shit.

What settings do you use? Do you jack up the spawn rate or use dynamic spawns? I've never had this problem in such a way that it was inescapable, at least not since the pre-dda days when no one used static spawn.
You can destroy a shocker brute with one shot of a sawn-off saiga at zero skill if you're like two or three tiles away.
It's great.

That's when I last used them haha. When making noise caused more enemies to spawn such that you'd probably just make things worse the second you pulled the trigger. I've avoided shotguns ever since, but I'll have to try them out again. Always liked the idea of having a character with a boomstick dishing out justice in the apocalypse!
Do wander spawns work okay?

It's been a while since I played with them, but when I did they absolutely did not. It spawns zombies occasionally just fine, but there was absolutely no prediction for where they spawned. I cleaned out a house and the surrounding area, and they would spawn inside the completely closed in house. At one point I was walking outside and there was a column I was walking past. Everything was clear as I was walking up to it, but when I got 2 tiles past it suddenly there was a zombie right behind it.

I just tried them and it feels like zombies just spawn literally everywhere at random. Can't walk outside for a minute without getting swarmed. And that far from any towns.
Turned them off for good.

I don't think it's normal for there to be this many cop bots
I've been getting released and re-arrested for a whole straight day now

Oh god why.
I didn't even know cata had tilesets.
I hate blob oceans. Dont stay in that house another minute.
Police bots can arrest and not kill instead?

You can get arrested?

Had a character die because of one once. A single blob followed me from some slime pits. While I slept it reproduced and surrounded the house. I tried to craft some grenades to help me get out, got through like 3 crafts before they started spawning through the walls. Couldn't do anything without being interrupted by them. Put on my power armor and tried to fight my way through, but only got like 5 tiles outside before I died.
I've somehow never encountered a blob ocean before.

That poor fucking copbot looks so miserable.

They deserve that for always smacking me in the head.

I posted a story a long time ago of my base getting surrounded in the middle of the night without me knowing. First sign was the blobs spawning through the walls every other hour as I slept (started bugging me out, was scared blobs could revive from their remains). Once I saw the expanse beyond the compound, I foolishly chose to hop the fence and swim.
So, yeah, I was just minding my own business, kung-fu'ing my way out of a lab when all of a sudden:

[sp]That's man-hacks (I blame monster in-fighting)[/sp]
Holy moly shotguns are fun. I found a double barrelled one and it took out a hulk in a single hit, sending blood and meat chunks all over the place. Satisfying!
I think having a big shotgun in the backpack for taking down the occasional big guy is going to become a new norm for me. I really should remember to keep trying the things that were underpowered/poor a long while ago, as it seems like they've changed quite a bit.
I'd suggest making a strap and adding it to the shotgun so you can wear it and save the volume.
Also sawing it off is nice to save volume.

I never go anywhere without one and a good set of ammo for it.
Some sort of backup firearm is always a good idea, preferably something with a lot of power. I typically just take a heavy pistol or two. Any extended outings in my APC include several rifles and explosives packed in the storage units, and I never leave without at least one Molotov for safety.
This is probably something y'all do without feeling clever but:
I just realised that you can make 'vehicles' that don't have wheels and use them as sort of stationary buildings. So, I created a 3x3 frame, added floor panel and walls and a door, and inside I added a fridge, a water tank and a RV cooking unit. Solar panels on the top = makeshift base. I realise I could get an engine and some wheels and make the same thing portable but I kinda like having a very lightweight vehicle that uses little resources to drive around in and then a place to call home at night.
I am rather proud of my little creation, especially since it took a huge amount of torso damage from moving steel parts between a wreckage to the back of my car, and probably more petrol driving to and from wreckages than it'll ever save, BUT it was fun!
Can anyone give me any starting tips? Every time I start I end up getting mauled by a swarm of zombies or freezing to death.

Smash the lockers at the start and grab a rock, craft a makeshift crowbar. Early game. Bushes and windows are your friend. Lure a zombie onto that square and they get slower movement, really useful in getting some extra swings in and killing/picking them off.
Turn dynamic spawns off if enabled. Find a knife asap. So you can butcher animals you kill but also so you can cut apart clothes you find that you don't need or so you can craft better gear to retain heat. IE Balaclava, gloves etc, and also use the rags and other mats to reinforce your gear by using a sewing kit etc.
Fuel cans and a funnel are great for collecting rainwater ready to be boiled and consumed later on. Sledgehammers work wonders against walls. And you can make makeshift lockpicks really easy (Can't remember exact recipe) but they are super handy. Especially as you CAN gain entry to Gun Stores by using them.

I did something similar when I tried making a stationary base.
Built an excessive, solar-powered laser defense system with a [sp]nuclear engine[/sp] for backup power.
I've never feared so much for my own life, I don't trust the targeting to account for me when targeting something behind me.

Also, don't just keep slamming your character into a zombie in combat. Usually on a standard zombie you can get two swings in before you can move away, then let the zombie come to you again and repeat. Note that you should not try this with hulks or brutes.

I'm insanely tired right now so I won't be able to give anything decent, but I'll try to remember to get back to this thread after I get some sleep.
Very basic tips: Utilize bushes, fences, and windows to slow down zombies. Learn how to exploit speeds so you can attack with minimal return attacks. Utilize lines of sight to pull as few zombies as possible. Don't be afraid to turn up the points in the options - I play with 24 starting/24 max traits. We're not going to judge you if you make a 1000 point character, we're just going to feel sorry for your fingers for having to hold down the keys to spend all of them.
