I read the background of Mr. Friendly in Raising the Bar, I laughed so hard when I read that.
For those of you who don't or can't have Raising the Bar:
Valve invited a young designer (probably a [b][url="http://www.hrgiger.com/"]Giger[/url][/b] fan, judging by his love for phallic symbols) over to their studio. This guy was a relative to one of the people working at Valve, and he'd just graduated from art college, so they thought they'd start off his career by inviting him to design one of the early Half-Life monsters.
Apparantly, this guy made a freakish concept using rape and penises and tentacles as starting points. It turned out to look like something you'd be more likely to see in some weird Japanese adult cartoon. Eventually, after some comments from Valve, the concept turned into the Mr. Friendly we know today.
I'm still surprised they didn't just send him packing after the first concept sketch. :xd:

I said the team could be contacted there, that doesn't mean it's the official site.
I'm in noway apart of the team, so e-mail them yourself to find out. What I do know (not 100% positive) is that they are only making chapters of what is available screenshots/movies etc to the public. I'd asume they would re-create or use refs from the SDK for models.
But you never know, maybe someone in the team has pre-released builds :P
