Fallout Thread V30: The universe where everyone is left handed

I feel like most weapons that exist today could fit into Fallout, it's just that you do have to change the appearance to age it a bit, how much of course depends on how strictly you want to follow that 50s retrotech aesthetic.
For example, I did a real quick mockup of the SCAR to make it look like something out of the early 70s:

You could probably get away with just taking off stuff rails and collapsible stocks, but you could go the extra mile and make it look like it's made out of wood and stamped metal to really age it.
Yeah I don't argue that it COULD work in fallout, it's just that I haven't seen any do it successfully yet :v:

I think that mock-up would look better with a wooden stock and grip imo
even removing rails and collapsible stocks isn't necessary, for example the marksman's rifle in new vegas had both. nobody says new vegas ain't canon
[editline]25th February 2017[/editline]
the picatinny rail came around before many of the guns in the game so there's absolutely zero reason for it to not exist in the fallout universe. the weaver rail came out in the 30s and rails in general have been around in some form or another since magnified optics came around

yeah but i think everyone agreed that the marksman rifle looked hella out of place

not as out of place as the CAWS at least

That's true, but what I'm trying to say is that removing those elements helps make a newer gun look older. Personally I don't really care that much, I'm more concerned about guns looking like they've been through the apocalypse and not factory new, rather than modern vs retro. But I do know that a lot of people, especially people here, prefer guns in Fallout to have pre-2000s design and look.
Weapons can have rails in fallout, its just that they are more streamlined. Not serrated like you see on most modern weapons.

Since you reload it like a pump shotgun, do you have the Bethesda glitch where you fire one shell then reload with a full mag?
Since you reload it like a pump shotgun, do you have the Bethesda glitch where you fire one shell then reload with a full mag?
Nope, it's using the lever action fix.
[sp]Also it has a shotgun shell receiver, incidentally[/sp]

I mean, if the creative team for New Vegas thought it was fine then...? I mean given a lot of them sort of created the Fallout universe I think they know better what fits and what doesn't.
It honestly pisses me off that people think weapons technology wouldn't have advanced past the 40's, because that's the vibe I get when they go on about stuff like Fallout 2 having semi modern weaponry or New Vegas having "rails", I mean hell, especially in times of war, weapons technology advances heavily and the fact that it's 2077, they have plenty of time to develop weapons technology, they are quite a few years ahead of us in certain areas, powered armour, laser weapons, plasma weapons, why are Rails such a problem.

Then you should have zero problems with it being in the game? given the artists put there in the first place.

Aesthetic.
Aesthetic.
You can have that cake and eat it too, as the New Vegas team clearly understand to a better degree than Bethesda, it doesn't always have to be one or the other.
Most of the weapon art decisions in NV are mostly based around the fact that JSawyer's a gun-nut and wanted some real life guns.
And you could argue that the reason why gun technology didn't advance is because the military shifted its focus over towards energy weapons.
Tho its probably hypocritical to say that because imo, you can say canon this and lore that all you want but really its all down to personal preference on how retrofuture you think Fallout should be.

One thing about that; IMO, Bethesda has always one-upped them in terms of art and style. AA budgets mean hiring actual artists, instead of game devs with artistic aspirations.
Kinda shows in New Vegas imo; while their recreations of Fallout 1/2 designs looked fine, a lot of the time when they made something totally new, it looked pretty meh. And while, Bethesda tends to make tech a bit retro...

This is just ridiculous.

Who cares about budget that's not what this is about at all, those weapons make sense within the context of the universe, weapons technology never stops being developed, it continues, even during peacetime, You don't just stop making things better, the US Military hasn't been in a real war for years and they are still developing new weapons technology every day AND, in regards to hand held weapons there are only certain ways you CAN make them better or more efficient, like the rail systems.
So I find it hard to believe the US Military of the Fallout universe hasn't being doing the exact same thing and they've had a lot more time and a full scale war to further push development in various sectors.

Artistic license > needless realism, imo
The way NV handles it can be really inconsistent and ugly sometimes

What about the New Vegas dev's artistic license, the license that made the universe we know and love in the first place?
[editline]edit[/editline]
Also I'd hardly call that "needless" realism, it's something that makes sense sure, but "needless realism" that honestly sounds like something Pete Hines would say.

Acceptable breaks from reality like guns not having picatinny rails are fine in my books; they fit the look, regardless of logic, and it isn't too unlikely.
Also, I don't remember many guns with rails in Fallout 1/2, either. A lot of them were either fantasy guns, vintage weapon, or modern weapons like the P90 that lacked rails.
edit: it's not like i hate new vegas' art direction; it was mediocre, not awful
i just feel the marksman carbine in particular was a really bad choice; i think weapons like the assault carbine that are almost modern but not quite fit nicely as rare, upper tier weapons
marksman carbine was a somewhat common rifle with rails plastered all over when nothing else had any

Guns can not have Picatinny rails, I'm not arguing for them to modernize the entire weapons selection or whatever, my argument is, those weapons exist, regardless of what you guys think is kosher or not for Fallout and that the retro aesthetic shouldn't stop some other types of guns from having them in the future, same thing with "modern" weapons showing up, of which aren't really "modern" in the Fallout universe given the gap of years between there creation in our reality and the time the Fallout universe "ends" in nuclear fire, you can have them, they can show up, it shouldn't really matter, the hodge podge of weapons is fine because the Fallout universe had time to develop them and THEN some.
Like I said, you can have your cake and eat it too, as the New Vegas devs clearly understood, instead of going full on over the top retro and making the main assault rifle a water-cooled WW1/WW2 era weapon that just wouldn't be in production anymore and would be a museum piece more than anything else, you use a weapon that's from the 50's/90's like the Heckler & Koch G3, or as another example, the weapon the Fallout 3 Sniper Rifle is based on, the SV-98, which is actually a modern sniper rifle, circa 2003, more modern than the P-90 as a matter of fact, just add some wood or make it look older with a different material if you REALLY care about the retro aesthetic as Bethesda did do and it's fine.

I don't have them saying that exactly, hell I'd don't think they've ever mentioned it for any of their weapons, but like the Heckler & Koch G3 and the Fallout 3 Assault Rifle are the same weapons minus a few design choices, which sort of proves they were looking to actual existing weaponry for inspiration if the Chinese Assault Rifle wasn't a big indication, the Fallout 3 Sniper Rifle looks to be very clearly based off of the SV-98 just given a retro aesthetic coat of "paint", persay.
Urge to mod the fuck out of FO4 rising with all these cool weapons again.

It has as much in common with the SV-98 as it does with any other modern skeletal stock sniper weapon system. The Fallout 3 sniper rifle is actually the DKS-501 rifle from the earlier games, just with some tactical furniture.
