I donno if I agree with the way the story went considering [sp]the cult and the elder being in the hole but it's not like it was just slapped on at the end just to spice things up[/sp], if you pay attention throughout the game when going through it again you actually notice a lot of things that lead up to the big reveal [sp]Mae's condition and her seeing 'shapes', the town constantly having natural or economical disasters, people going missing, etc[/sp]. But I think it'd also be wrong to interpret it as it just being what it seems at face value, maybe it's just one big metaphor, maybe it's [sp]Mae's way of dealing with her mental issues[/sp], maybe it's none of that.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I'd be fine if it were both.
The way I see it there's no point looking for a clear conclusion for this as if it were a detective story, because it's not one. It's not the point to figure out of [sp]pit cthulhu is real or not[/sp], it's not really what the experience is about. [sp]The mine caved in. The cultists have been buried with it. The friends will never know what was ACTUALLY down there, and neither will we, and it's not to a fault.[/sp] [editline]25th April 2017[/editline]
[sp]Mae's condition and her seeing 'shapes'[/sp].
Now this however, seems as quite clearly [sp] her having https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissociation_(psychology) sort of psychological problem and explaining it the best way she can.[/sp] The game kind of depicts it visually but I think it's more of an artistic license than attempt to be explicitly descriptive of her experience.
I dunno about you guys but I interpreted the whole [sp]death cult thing[/sp] as a political statement, [sp]the older generation sacrificing the poor and downtrodden that they see as useless to keep the economy running, rather than acknowledging that it's the outside world changing that has damaged the town's economy, e.g the internet killing off the mall, and adapting to that. It's anti-conservative as fuck which makes sense if you've ever looked at the devs' twitter accounts[/sp] The story just works better in my head if the [sp]cult isn't worshipping a real thing and are just desperate nostalgic nutters. It'd really take away from the game's tackling of mental illness if they blamed all Mae's oddities on "oh a space squid made her do it"[/sp]
Me feels that the whole flaw of the c word situation isn't its "abruptness" but how it doesn't quite fit a story dominated by everyday mundanities and personal insecurities. Also its payoff is crap.
My personal take on it is that [sp]there is a 'real' part in the end and a 'mental' part, the real being the actual death cult who want to preserve the town and want to bring it back to what it once was, fighting against modern technology, people leaving, desperately trying to hold on to something that's impossible to hold on to forever. The mental part is the actual 'god' the cult worships, I personally believe there's no actual elder being in the pit, it's just an excuse for the cult to do the horrible things they do as it is an excuse for Mae to return back to her hometown after experiencing massive anxiety and depression while she was in college. The encounter in the mines with the cult is literally meant as a wake-up call for Mae, someone who doesn't really want to grow up herself and desperately wants things to stay the same comforting way they've always been, much like the cult she doesn't want to let go. Throughout the game she pretends to have grown up since she left but she very obviously hasn't to the point where she (unintentionally) messes with her friend's lives trying to go back to the good times she remembers. The part where she gets down into the water and 'meets' the elder being is her mind snapping back to reality and finally realizing that she can't stop what she fears, the town is dying off, her friends will leave at some point, she might lose the house she grew up in, all that. It's her coming to terms with it and realizing that instead of trying to fight back she should enjoy it while it lasts so that, in her own words, when it does go away it hurts badly, and that hurting means that it all at least meant something, that SHE is SOMEONE at least.[/sp] But that's just my interpetation of it. I think one of the stronger elements of the devs having made the ending in this way is that it can be seen and explained in several different ways, perhaps as a way to allow people to find the explaination that fits most for them as a person. I donno.
The story just works better in my head if the [sp]cult isn't worshipping a real thing and are just desperate nostalgic nutters. It'd really take away from the game's tackling of mental illness if they blamed all Mae's oddities on "oh a space squid made her do it"[/sp]
IIRC the [sp]cult at one point mentioned the caves being filled with poisonous water, my theory is the water evaporated/soaked into the ground leaving whatever poison it was still in the caves, and the past miners went nuts after working in there for so long and breathing in the fumes. Could also explain Mae's hallucinations in there and the cultists being able to convince others to join them easily.[/sp]
Doesn't one of the [sp]news articles in on the micofiche explicitly mention ground gas buildup in basements of houses causing health issues including hallucinations in multiple residents?[/sp]
Btw what's the thread policy on fanart and stuff like that? Not that I wanna drown this place in that kinda stuff or post fan ships like Maebea or anything of the sorts but y'know. Some people got annoyed/turned off by the amount of fan creation stuff in the Undertale thread so I figured I'd check beforehand.

[sp] "There's No Reception in Possum Springs" No reception here I wave my black phone In the air like a flare like a prayer but no reception I read on the Internet baby face boy billionaire Phone app sold made more money in one day than my family over 100 generations More than my whole world ever has World where house-buying jobs became rent-paying jobs became living with family jobs Boy billionaires Money is access access to politicians waiting for us to die lead in our water alcohol and painkillers Replace my job with an app replace my dreams of a house and a yard With a couch in the basement "The future is yours!" Aight no audiable "noooOOOOooooOOOooooo"'s when it comes to fanart yet so I'll take that as a green light. Not mine by the way, link at the bottom. I don't find a reason why someone to hate your artwork. Your artwork are great! Maybe someone will complain that Bea wearing a necklace and it isn't a part of her shirt?
I don't find a reason why someone to hate your artwork. Your artwork are great! Maybe someone will complain that Bea wearing a necklace and it isn't a part of her shirt?
Well I haven't actually drawn that, I just thought it was cute. :v: Source of those images is at the bottom.
Even in fanart I cant ever unsee Bea biting the wrong side of a lollipop instead of a cigarette
Doesn't one of the [sp]news articles in on the micofiche explicitly mention ground gas buildup in basements of houses causing health issues including hallucinations in multiple residents?[/sp]
Not to mention there's a fucking cave under your house.
Who wants to see a cynical owl shit all over a story-focussed game that centers around young adults dealing with themes such as growing up in a small american town during the second half of October? [sp]Yes I stole that joke from the video, bite me[/sp] Funny stuff aside this is actually a pretty good 'review' of both games, spoilers ahead obviously. Cant stop listening to this Weird Autumn rock cover, dont want to stop listening.
Cant stop listening to this Weird Autumn rock cover, dont want to stop listening.
Could you link it? I'm loving covers of the songs so far. Personally keep listening to this 'Die Anywhere Else' cover. Also this little animation thing is pretty cute. MandoPony actually has a few different NITW themed songs, Ghosts is also really good.
I'm glad the mystery stuff wasn't the focus of the game (Though I expect anyone that actually played the game to understand this), just like how in Firewatch there was this huge mystery thing in it as well but it was never the focus either. In FW the game is literally all about character building in this really nice little world. It was there to be a transitional phase for them. It wasn't there to tell a a story of some [sp]Cult in a small town[/sp] or as we saw in firewatch [sp]a murder mystery[/sp] because the plot behind them are pretty common tropes. Instead they're just a foundation for something else. The way I see it too [sp]As said by others, the cult shit is effectively the old world desperately attempting to keep things the way they did despite the fact that the world is changing and the old ways just aren't going to work anymore[/sp] And it's great that it's this way because I'm really tired of seeing the plot itself being made the foreground, when the real story is usually within the characters and how they cope with everything around them.
Unrelated, but you know how nobody likes books because our parents loved them and we think it lame because of it. What if like we're going to have to tell our kids to play video games just like our parents tell us to read a book or something and stop playing video games.
Sure, its by the same guys so you probably already know it. Im gonna animate myself a real cool NITW avatar.
No three guesses as to which character it's going to be of.
There was an official Discord server for this game, but the link has mysteriously disappeared! Actually, the server has been the target of some malicious peeps this past month and a half. I've come here to post that you shouldn't download any modifications of the game, period. These are very much likely to contain malware developed by these people. Anyways, if you're still much-ly interested in the game and want to discuss fan theories, etc, the reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/NightInTheWoods/ is your best bet, as their Discord is heavily moderated and private for the time being...
I'm glad you've brought this to our attention. We'll keep an eye out for such shifty activities.
eff the cops
there are nitw mods?
Apparently so. And I vaguely remember someone linking to a... particularly lewd mod, a month or so ago? Am I remembering it right? It's somewhere in the thread. But with this new intel, we should probably stay away from most NitW mods for the time being, given the activities of certain malicious individuals.
