Just picked up copies of Unreal Tournament and Unreal Gold at Goodwill for $2 each, so excited.

I find it neat how some of the newer custom maps look more like they were from UT2004 than UT99.
Just bought the Unreal Collection on Steam, I've been meaning to to give Unreal Tournament '99 a try :dance:

get the DX9,10 or OpenGL renderer, I can't state this strongly enough

The default renderer is Dx7 and is woefully out of date, and the default OpenGL renderer was an afterthought and hidden as an "uncertified" renderer to use with the game - either of these are properly polished renderers that have been maintained for years, with many advanced configuration options - check their readmes.
If you have issues with the Galaxy sound subsystem you can replace it with OpenAL or FMOD - not as critical, galaxy usually still works for most, but welcome anyways. This also comes with graphics renderers but they're not as maintained as the ones above.

You may need to disable any processor dynamic underclocking features (Cool'n'Quiet, SpeedStep) as the engine was programmed before on-the-fly altering of a CPU's clock speed was a consideration and so the engine's tickrate is set relative to the clockspeed it detects on loading - this will cause odd framerate issues. The engine detects and handles today's multicore high clockspeed processors without a problem, but cannot handle these power saving features.
A personal note on this though, YMMV - While I did get the framerate issue, I never had to disable these features to workaround it - what worked for me was letting the introduction flyby play out a little bit rather than instantly skipping to the main menu.

Had a really great time in Unreal Gold, I think its very rare that someone joins my game and helps me out and work together like a bro.
I miss those cow monster with the guns equipped strapped on it's back.

I think so, it's one of the few maps in UT99 that give me very low FPS.
Played UT99 *online* for the first time today. Had a blast. Did not too back, had a ~0.6 K/D, pretty pleased with that.
Having any kills what so ever that weren't blind luck online is what I'd call a good performance, when most of the people left regularly playing are insanely good.

Ballistic Blood + more realistic friction on the ragdolls makes kills pretty satisfying
Also just discovered I have a remake of nyleve as a CTF map for 2k4, don't recall getting it but it's pretty cool

I feel that the bandana would be more fitting on a Soldier mesh head, but do you guys think I should keep it the way it is or lose the bandana?
Also, for the faces, should I go with the more tough and rugged faces like the one shown above or go for the cleaner, more slick look kinda like 50s bikers?

That screenshot made me think that was in UT99 because of the viewmodel and had me confused a bit, for some reason.
Yeah, I plopped the files from UTR in my main directory and used WoRM2k4 to put the UT99 weapons it has that were finished in my game (WoRM because it's not designed to be used with regular 2k4)
I want to play UT2k4 again. I don't think I was very good at it but it was so much fun
It's funny how in 2k4's onslaught they don't show your KDR or even your kills or deaths and this is a game mostly centered around killing, while BF games everybody fights for their KD in the large scale matches anyway
can anybody provide a list of active/somewhat active servers?
Vanilla invasion on UT2K4 was so much fun, the last (populated) server that had it went down about a year ago though :(

2K4 hides your KD and other stats in the F3 scoreboard.
yeah, it doesn't show enemy KD though which i think makes sense for the gamemode.
Does anyone know of any good custom assault maps for 2k4? Thrust from the CBP is pretty good, and so is abyss (2k4 remake of oceanfloor) and I have like 2 others but I can't seem to find many good ones that aren't races, or any that actually look good

Hey, I finally managed to get UT99 with the help of my older brother.
So does anyone feel like starting up a server and playing a game of this?
Is it really only possible to get a maximum of 16 players/bots as if it was built into the engine? I tried editing the initialbots and maxplayers tags in the config file, and I tried using the addbots command, but it seems like there can only be 16 alive players at a time. I can't get more than names on the server list and dead corpses.

16 players was the hard limit for the engine I think. I tried to start a server in UT99 and it kept dropping the number of players fo 16 every time I tried to put it higher.
How do I find players that aren't longtime ubertranslocatejumprocketers in 2k4? I found one CTF server that had a few players on it but they kicked me for being 'too boring to kill.' I'm not sure how I'm supposed to get better if I can't even get more than a couple feet away from spawn before dying.

One problem I'm having, though, is that it's apparently impossible to have the arm texture change with the team colors, so I'm either going to need to do something creative with the team colors or just ditch the sleeves if I were to have the jacket colorable.
Also, what do you guys think I should do with the shoulder pads and pants? I don't think I should keep the default look on them.
