I kinda wanna see an updated Skaarj design that plays off of the silhouette of the low poly U98 version. Dreads that are more like twisty ribbons and a neck that's so thick and short and traps that were so huge that its face was almost just a bump on the top of the torso. I mean, those are the elements that pushed it away from being the clear Predator ripoff that it was. Every attempt to "modernize" the skaarj just slims it down and makes it more generic looking.

That's the right idea, but I don't think they pulled it off. It still has that "This is my fifth digital sculpture ever" look.

I've been having fun making various facial shapes for the Skaarj model based on some of the suggestions people have been making on the Unreal forums. Bullish Bruiser is my pick out of the three. It has a short face like the Unreal 1 Skaarj. If you want to make a fourth variant my suggestion would be taking the upper skull of the Bruiser and pair it with the Fortune's nose + jaw region.
I just noticed that Tidal Blast on the UT4 forums apparently got banned. So uh, not sure what for. It might have something to do with that "communication between dev/community on character design" thread, but who knows.

Booted up UT99 for the first time in a few months, joined a random server. Got banned instantly for 'you are totaly an idiot, UT doesnt needed retarded noobs to play it again' :(

it's a pretty nice re-imagining, but I'm not sure about the exoskeleton mixed with the shoulder pads, maybe the look would suit the raw steel guys better

I probably should have mentioned that Gooba started a thread where people post their ideas on Characters/Weapons and he (and probably some others who does concept art on the forums) will try to do a design based off of each of those ideas in his free time and have others critic it in case there's something that needs to be changed. The Gorge and robot concepts that I posted where one of those designs. Besides, I'm sure there will be shit tons of cosmetic mods for the game for people who don't like the art style, so it doesn't really matter.

That being said, I like the kinds of ideas they've been having for this iteration, so I'm on board. Besides, it's gonna be classic and retro 10 years from now anyway.

They made UT99 a classic, why doesn't anyone trust them to do the same now?
Personally, I didn't really mind most of the art at all (It's better than the one in UT3, and frankly I should be glad that some weapons kinda looked like the ones in UT99), though I was a little irked when one of the developers took a look at one of the Xan concepts from the community and seemed to suggest that it was too identical to the designs in the previous games even though the concept itself was already pretty different from the other designs save that handle thing on the back of his head and the visor eyes, which was one thing he specifically thought should change. I guess it makes a little sense considering that the team's going for a different approach on the character design. I feel like I should stop being spoiled about this kind of stuff. I haven't seen the xan thing in question, but I really dislike how fixated some people are on maintaining the old style. I mean people saying malcolm is trash because he doesn't have freakishly huge forearms and shoulderpads, lauren concept sucks because there's no cleavage, necris dude is terrible because he doesn't look like a scrawny goth etc yeah, ut99's style was killer, but the point of a new game is to iterate, and the current designs definitely do evoke feelings of the old characters and guns as for the current style I really like it. I wouldn't mind if the characters were chunkier like in ut99, but as far as a more 'realistic' approach goes they've done really well. I especially like how large and prominent the guns are compared to the characters, which makes them very identifiable, without being comically huge [editline]18th August 2015[/editline] also its miles ahead of the GoW-esc meat heads from UT3
I'd like to see the concept of Xan.
Can we just get a game of vanilla DM or TDM or CTF or something in UT99? I'm sick of these insta-grapple-rocket-arena types or 24/7 deck16/face servers
