I'd like to see the concept of Xan.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/bSWqn3q.png[/t]
He's less bulky than his previous design, he doesn't really have that square-shaped head like he did before, and his armor in general is pretty different. It's already different enough from the previous designs, but yet the other dev guy seems to think it's still too much of a replica of at least one of the designs.
Also, I don't think concept guys should be afraid of changing the look of the iconic characters a bit. Does Xan have to have the bucket handle on his head and the visor eyes to be Xan? I don't know. I know this is a touchy subject for some. Even internally we're pretty divided on the subject. But I think we should use the old character designs as reference while not being boxed in or chained to them.
It was more a polite suggestion than an angry criticism, but it was still kinda odd considering that I was under the impression that this design was already using the older designs as nothing more than references while taking some liberties. Seems like he prefers an entirely different design for Xan.
I kinda prefer the concept below (or at least the direction this unfinished piece is going), though. I only brought the other one up because it was something on my mind.
I haven't seen the xan thing in question, but I really dislike how fixated some people are on maintaining the old style. I mean people saying malcolm is trash because he doesn't have freakishly huge forearms and shoulderpads, lauren concept sucks because there's no cleavage, necris dude is terrible because he doesn't look like a scrawny goth etc
I will be honest, I'm kinda disappointed that the Thunder Crash won't seem to be having that ornamental-looking armor they had in the previous games in this game, but I'm still liking the official Malcolm concepts, and I believe Chris said that the characters were intentionally generic looking so that they could be used as a base to put more cosmetics on like armor and shit.
Xan just isn't the same without being bulky.
Does Xan have to have the bucket handle on his head and the visor eyes to be Xan
Fuck that, if it doesn't have the handle on his head he isn't Xan.
That "bucket handle" is one of things that made him stand out from other robot designs.

I just remembered that Xan Mark II had a color variant where he had white circular eyes instead of the usual horizontal visor.

Obviously, people are more familiar with the visor, but it would be neat if there was an alternate headpiece similar to the one in the picture for Xan, assuming that he ends up being in this game.

Here's a throwback to that one UT99 poster with the new fem necris. It was on that UT4 Flickr album.
[editline]19th August 2015[/editline]
It kinda makes me wish there was an easy way to get decent-looking long hair to work in UT4.
Here's Gooba's take on a Gen Mo'kai assassin.

And he also made some cyberpunk bikers based off of someone else's suggestion.
I've been having fun making various facial shapes for the Skaarj model based on some of the suggestions people have been making on the Unreal forums.
And "Bullish Bruiser" is a bit more in line with WozzMech's concepts: https://forums.unrealtournament.com/showthread.php?6789-Skaarj-Concept&p=181612&viewfull=1#post181612
Cool pics. This 3rd one you posted is more like what I was actually suggesting. Sounds like my description gave you a different impression! Nice to see someone playing around with it though.
Oh, hey wail. Nice to see you on here.

True, looking back, it kind of started to deviate from your descriptions halfway through. Thanks, though!
Has anyone heard of this? (You probably have considering that this was released in 2010, but I want to talk about it anyway)
http://www.moddb.com/mods/utcommunitysdk
It's basically an improved version of the UT99 engine. It's got shit like LODs, smooth-shading for brushes, a new particle system, decal projectors, post processing, all that jazz. It's pretty neat.

I just wanna say Skerion, you are doing a great job keeping the thread going. Loving all of the content you're bringing to light.
Thanks. I kinda wish this thread was at least as active as the Smash thread, though.
Hell, Unreal Tournament in general doesn't seem to have that much popularity nowadays compared to franchises like Half Life and Elder Scrolls.

it really needed an unreal 3 instead of an unreal tourney 3 back in the day.
could still come out with one if they had the budget for it.
Unreal Tournament 3 was supposed to be Unreal 3 as well. That's why it has that god awful campaign mode. It wasn't just the multiplayer that turned people down from UT3 after all.
Most people don't even consider the single player campaigns when thinking of Unreal, they usually think of the Tournament games the most, and we all know that UT2K4 was the last one most people enjoyed.
Unreal Tournament and it's other titles have become more of an underground pleasure. Those who play it, love it, but most either have moved on or don't know anything of it. Heck, check out the server lists I went to play some UT99 the other night and saw maybe 20 servers with population.

Kind of unfortunate, really. I consider the first Unreal on the same level of Half-Life. Finishing it really did feel like I had gone through an adventure, and I consider that the sign of a good game.

Unreal seems to be one of the many games that I haven't played but should play.

You absolutely should, the levels can be a little mazelike at times but it's well worth it.
It's a fun game, great environments and great weapon selection/variety, but some of the enemies can be really really bullet spongey.
So what character model do you tend to play as in UT99 or another UT game?
Right now, I just use my own NeoCop skin and play as the guy with the stubble, but custom content aside, I'm pretty sure I would tend to play as Blake in UT99. I remember that I would play as Wraith in UT2004 since he was the closest character I could get to Blake. Arclite's face and hair looked more similar to Blake's, but I didn't really want to play as a massive Juggernaut. It kinda makes me wish someone made an HD pack of the other UT99 characters for UT2004.

Well I played as Blake since I first started playing UT99 15 years ago, but now I pretty much pick either him or Kragoth (that necris dude with a goatee) or Von (Metal guard).
For UT2003 i picked Arclite because just like you said, he looks similar to Blake, but for UT2004 it's Romulus or Barktooth (sometimes i pick Syzygy if I'm in the mood for some non-human characters).
For UT3 it was either Kragoth or Othello with those weird helmets.

I remember long ago when i headhacked the brock model so I can put ut99 commandos in the game with this skin

Loque on UT99, Torch on UT2004.

That SDK looked awesome I really wanted to use that back in 2006-7 when I was working on UT (UE1) content. Most of that functionality wasn't finished until later, unfortunately.

Yeah, I think the singleplayer campaign for UT3 was a good idea, but it was really poorly executed. The Gears of War influence was very obvious and detrimental to the feel of the game. Plus it stepped all over past games in ways that were very careless and unnecessary. It showed a huge lack of creativity in that respect, and that lack of creativity is something I personally associate with the stagnation of the franchise. Giving the game series a real kick in the butt with some solid SP/Coop and fresh gameplay elements mixed in with the old standbys would go a long way toward revitalizing interest. That's wishful thinking unless Epic gets on board, though.

Firewall and Disconnect for UT'99. Rapier, Axon and Skrilax for UT2k4
As for UT3, this.

Skaarj Hybrid for UT99, for Ut2k4 it's always Xan or a Skaarj, UT3 I play as a Krall.
Is UT3 alive?
We should all get like an FP game night going for UT99
I'm working on a fancy apartment in UED2.

I still need to do the skybox. Although, I'm kinda worried that the skybox is going to conflict with the reflective floor since I kinda had that experience before.

If that happens but for UT2004 instead I'd be up for it.
