• Unreal Tournament GOTY - Die, bitch!

So Michiel came in that one thread and briefly talked about their noninvolvement in UT4 and made some clarifications.
Someone told me this thread hadn't died yet, and some clarification was needed. I see Alex has beaten me to the punch, so I'll just mirror his sentiments. When this is your job, and it's not like I'm raking in the dough or anything, I'll provide some music for free if I have the spare time to make any tunes between jobs. Giving it away to a company that has the means to compensate us fairly just feels...wrong, especially when you do this to pay the bills which is an obligation I have to meet through paid work. It's a gigantic letdown, because I was absolutely psyched to revisit Unreal Tournament. I wasn't just a composer on the original, but I've played particularly UT99 and UT2k4 completely to death, so I'm also a huge fan of the franchise. I doubt I'll be able to rack up frags today with my diminished reaction-skills but that's beside the point :p Maybe Epic will come around, maybe they won't, but this iteration of UT looks stunning and I'm happy to see so much talent on display. Like Alex said, we're going to be doing our own thing soon. Details will follow at a later date. If you wish to stay updated, give us a Like: https://www.facebook.com/mvdbos/ https://www.facebook.com/Alexander-Brandon-96845182620/ I want to thank each and every one of you for the overwhelming, largely positive response to this topic. It's a shame it didn't pan out, but stay tuned. :)
And then Entropy, an official member of the UT4 team, came in and mentioned the discussions that the team had with the other UT composers and clarified a couple things.
Just for the sake of clarity, we did have many long conversations with the UT composers; some chose to contribute, some did not. With those that did not contribute, we did discuss several forms of compensation, but were unable to come to terms that satisfied everyone involved. AFAIK there's no bad blood, and we have stayed in touch on and off through the months (often just on a personal note - we're fans here as well, and I look at some of these guys as friends after our years of working together). And of course, we'd openly welcome their involvement in the future, especially once we're out of pre-alpha and have more established systems in place.
So yeah, it looks like them working on music for the game at some point isn't totally out of the question, yet. Also, it's nice that there isn't any resentment between the team and composers. Not that I thought that there was much resentment in the first place or that it was the main reason the composers didn't want to contribute, but it's still nice to hear.
I'm trying to figure out how to skin something for UT2k4, but my Anthology completely lacks UPaint apparently and i'm not sure how to open up the .utx files for editing
The whole thing about the composers returning has been really confusing, but I guess part of the reason why is because of how radical the development process of this game is. Not many games, especially big franchise games, are made like UT4. All I can say at this point I guess is that I hope they do bring the original composers back in the future. It still seems possible, so I'm not losing hope.
I'm trying to figure out how to skin something for UT2k4, but my Anthology completely lacks UPaint apparently and i'm not sure how to open up the .utx files for editing
If all you need to do is extract the textures into a format that can be edited and have no problem with packing them back into a .utx you can try UTPT.
If all you need to do is extract the textures into a format that can be edited and have no problem with packing them back into a .utx you can try UTPT.
Well I unpacked and now I can't figure out how to repack :v:
Henrik is working on some brightskins. [t]http://ut2341.com/stuff/skins1.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/IvnTSCd.png[/t] They oddly feel nostalgic since they kinda remind me of UT99's bright team colors. [editline]24th November 2015[/editline] Also, slightly irrelevant since it's not Unreal Tournament, but HOLY SHIT. It would be neat if we could get something like this in UT4, maybe in a Prey-esque map or something.
Personally I dont use bright skins because they feel oddly out of place to me, but they look neat for what they are.
Some news: CTF-Volcano is getting arted up! Its still a pretty big WIP but its being done! Also, Gooba made a map before being hired by epic named DM-Sand. Its now inside of the game's editor, so im 100% sure that its going to be added into the main game in the next patch or two!
I always liked the concept behind that DM-Sand map. I hope Gooba gets a chance to work some more on that Oni map.
The sand map's giving me some Timesplitters 1 Egypt vibes.
Kazeo's update on the Nali Cow. [t]https://sites.google.com/site/paulkazeohinstratton/home/Cow4-1.JPG[/t] [t]https://sites.google.com/site/paulkazeohinstratton/home/Cow4-2.JPG[/t] Also, you guys should see the unofficial Skaarj model that someone's working on. It looks sick. [t]https://forums.unrealtournament.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=23839&stc=1[/t] [t]https://forums.unrealtournament.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=23837&stc=1[/t] [t]https://forums.unrealtournament.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=22851&stc=1[/t] Rick Kohler and some others is giving it some attention, too. Here's hoping that the devs will eventually put this in the game when it's done.
Also, you guys should see the unofficial Skaarj model that someone's working on. It looks sick.
That tail is hella tiny.
If the model has to be standardized then alright, but the tail being so far from the ground looks kinda ridiculous to me.
Are the Nali Cows just going to be ambient or are we looking an another Nali Slaughter-type thing going on with them

That guy is one of the few people I've seen remix older game music with newer instruments and yet also manage to not loose the atmosphere and charm of the original
Played competition with the new UT, and i had a blast! It is really nice to see it back!
That guy is one of the few people I've seen remix older game music with newer instruments and yet also manage to not loose the atmosphere and charm of the original
Hmm, this actually makes me having a challenge, thanks! See if i can try remixing "Foregone Destruction" and "Mechanism Eight".
It would be really nice to get a remix of SuperFist. I didn't really like the one in UT2004 due to the fact that it sounds more "garage-bandy" than I'd prefer specifically for that song.

Love this guy's Organic: Captures it perfectly.
It's too bad that a lot of the fan music made for UT4 have that similar electronic genre and sound a bit samey. There are some unique sounding music pieces like NU's Orbital Elements and Shivaxi's Sun Daze, though. There's also Archer's music. Although, a lot of them probably wouldn't fit into UT4 since they kinda have that heavy 80s/90s vibe. They're still nice to listen to on their own, though.
Man, UT99 somehow still doesn't feel dated at all. How is it possible for a game to be this perfect? I went back and played it recently and I think it's still one of my favorite shooters. Halo CE is much the same way.
Really good stuff. Maybe there are downsides to the UT composers not participating but you can't ignore all the great shit fans have been cooking up.
Just to note, I wouldn't necessarily say that the original composers aren't going to be involved at all yet. There was a discussion on the forums involving epic devs and the composers and they basically just said that the deal is still in limbo until they can find a deal that they all can agree to, and that nothing is happening at this current moment. [editline]7th December 2015[/editline] Still, the community has been making some pretty good tracks. I would like to see some more unique songs be made though, myself.
Looks like Kazoo got the cow model in the game.
The big eyes make me think it's gonna make a dreamworks face in my direction
Watching the stream right now. They just revealed that they are working on Robots (The Corrupt) now. No renders yet (thats coming next week) but they showed off some art of what a more "service-built" robot looks like, and not necessarily something you'd see in the tournament. I'll post the concept here when I can find a link-able image. They also said they have some more stuff to reveal next week, so hopefully we'll get some more cool news then!
So are they kinda like the robots from Elysium?
Pretty much. [editline]9th December 2015[/editline] Also apparently Big Head and Fatboy mutators are on Epic's minds. Nice! [editline]9th December 2015[/editline] They also said the UT team is hiring and looking for more artists, specifically in Tech and Effects.
I decided to check the blog, and apparently you can download a Taye Skin from the marketplace that's based off of a suit of armor from Epic's Shadow Complex. https://www.unrealtournament.com/blog/shadow-complex-armor-in-unreal-tournament [t]https://cdn2.unrealengine.com/UnrealTournamentBlog/dec_2015/dec8_2015/12-8omegaarmor4-940x940-31192981.png[/t] Not sure if that interests anyone, but I'm thinking about getting it.
Here he is, Mr. Roboto. [t]https://forums.unrealtournament.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=24302&d=1449699296[/t] Take note of the following:
The biggest thing to note is that we are going to have three main visual styles of Corrupt bots. There will be many variants that come from this faction but starting out we are trying to focus on three distinct versions. - Phase 1: Industrial bots non-modified for combat. Can hold their own in combat but look like they should be doing construction not fighting. They should look cool but not necessarily dangerous and have minimal armored parts. - Phase 2: Multipurpose bots used for industrial or combat purposes. They have some utilitarian looking components and some exposed areas but it's obvious they have upgraded various parts to be more effective in combat. They should look a little chunkier and more armored. - Phase 3: Combat specific bots, the most powerful and deadly version. They have been engineered from the ground up to be the deadliest bots in the tournament. They have sleeker and more armored components and visually look like the strongest, toughest and meanest out of the three. We are starting with the Phase 1 level bot so a very stripped down and industrial design. This version should be seen as the weakest and least prepared for combat. There are many exposed parts as it was created as a mining workhorse not a combat unit.
