Devil Daggers -- Arena Shooting and Geometry Wars-style Survival Combine to Raise Literal Hell
i just discovered that holding down mouse button shoots daggers like a machine gun instead of the shotgun approach. of course, accuracy degrades faster than you can say jack rabbit, but hell yeah it's worth it.
i should make a disclaimer note: i didn't even look at the controls until yesterday, so i had no idea there were options. i also find it amazing how a mere 4-5 seconds bumped me up 2,000 spots in the leaderboards.

My wrist hurts
I had a run right before this one where I'd gotten to 444 and fallen, which somehow was lost to time and wasn't recorded on the leaderboard
Come hell or high water, I'm getting that Devil Daggerâ„¢ :smug:
If someone could get me the sound files of the game, that'd be awesome. I can't get into the sound archives myself.
Gonna second this, if someone can rip into DD's files and just get everything out that would be sick
I know it would hamper detection of enemies in this style of game, but this game needs a Neo 80s soundtrack right this goddamn second.

No? not everything styled after retro games is SO 80'S BRO

Like I like synthwave too but it totally doesn't fit this game, if devil daggers had to have a soundtrack it should be Quake-style creepy horror shit

Sorry Goon, but yeah, this need NiN in the background, not Perturbator (and I love the fuck out of Synthwave).
I think something more 16-bit inspired (Doom etcetera) would fit well.
Otherwise, the industrial metal of Quake 2 fits, imho.

I fucking in love the artstyle for this. How did they accomplish it? It looks like 3d with some kind of retro shader? Or just oldschool 3d from the ground up?
There is definitely something here that separates it from similar attempts like Strafe.
[editline]9th March 2016[/editline]
probably just a flawless execution of lowpoly/lowres art assets
I think the main things are it emulating fixed point numbers for vertices (rounding their positions up / down to a grid in world space), drawing everything to a small render target which is stretched, and colours being rounded to 16bpp or something.
I just reached 126 seconds... man, I really need to work on my crowd control skills. The "big horned" skull kicks my ass every time.

Managed to extract them, they're 185 .wav audio files. I think I managed to rip most, if not all of them. Assuming all of the sound files are all located on the devildaggers\res\audio file.

I was watching the #1 player stream yesterday and he's convinced that the horned skulls just fly around randomly and don't actually chase you

Daaammnn those sounds are amazing! I love it when games (particularly indie games) take sound design seriously.

This is awesome. There's a couple files called "secretsnake". I wonder what that is?

The ones without banded horns just move randomly (although I think they avoid your shots too), the ones with banded horns definitely chase you.

I'm gonna piss myself this is wonderful

I feel like I've caught them chasing. My impression was that if you were near them and not looking or hitting them, they'll hound you. They, like the chasing Dismemberers and the swarm, will definitely try different movement patterns if you're hitting them.
Is there any way to extract the models from this game?
Hot damn, it is done.

Now to never touch this game ever again! After 37 hours or so I've had my fill, thank you very much!
EDIT: I've only now noticed that the times don't match exactly, but you know, I think I can let it slide.
Probably late, but...

The boss that spawns at 400 seconds creates those if you let any of the red enemies reach it, seen here at ~6:58.

I never ran into that many of them, but from what I could tell they're nothing special (outside of looking pretty badass), and only a tiny bit tougher than the standard Impalers.
The artstyle and design of this game feels extremely unnerving and unsettling to me and I don't know why.
Devil Daggers leaves me wanting more for a fully fleshed campaign with actual level design, rather than soaking more hours in it.
The audiovisual design is fucking solid.

Finally got past my 401 second highscore, all was going well until I fell off the edge of the level at 408. The screen flash threw me off guard :v:
Just beat my 408 with 424, I don't think I had enough homing missiles to survive the boss
I don't play for like two weeks and now my average run is like 20-40 seconds longer than it used to be. Awesome.
[editline]17th March 2016[/editline]
And broke my record already. Woo!
ARRRGH I NEED MORE AIR CONTROL
I'm so used to games where air decel lets you slam on the brakes. I'm at 390 but I keep flying off the edge and into spawners and stupid crap.
[editline]19th March 2016[/editline]
That said, love this game. So worth its price tag. I'm 6 hours but it doesn't feel like it all. Starting to get the hang of fighting the centipedes whilst flying around at speed.
Can the homing daggers kill multiple weak enemies? Because I always feel like I'm using too many during the chaotic sections (there's usually some flying around after I've cleared the stage).
You can't completely stop, but you can pretty much do a 180 if you strafe in the direction you turn.
Dunno if homing daggers can kill multiple enemies but M2 shoots 10-20 daggers and M1+M2 shoots 5-10, so you can kind of spread them around evenly by firing them off in different directions. 70's the max amount of homing daggers you can have at once and 1 gem gives you 10
Sooooooo have any of you guys tried to press Ctrl+L? :v:
