While this is not a game to main a character in, saying that you can't main a character in any game with over 20 characters is kinda silly and entirely inaccurate in almost every genre.

This feels like really bad advice, since being able to play one or two heroes in each category keeps you from being locked out of usefulness in a competitive setting. Like, if someone else is a Zarya main and you're locked out of being a tank, you're gonna have to be useful at support or assault heroes.

had a ~l3 epik tro11~ mercy who ran aorund and only healed the torb grouped with her. she also only rezz'd when she died.
our whole team was yelling at her and reported her.
at the end she told the enemy team to report me for harassment and false reports

Because people have distinct playstyle preferences and they may not like some characters?
That's ignoring games with 40+ characters in them, which are just straight up impractical to play a wide swath of the cast seriously and in most competitive scenes it's best to have a main with a complementary secondary than to main multiple characters since you optimize a single character faster than multiple. Overwatch is an exception to the norm of this because class matchups tend to have a higher effect on who wins than normally occurs in most games due to a combination of design choices and balance issues. (i.e. in TF2, even against hard counters, if you are able to attack someone from behind, you tend to have the advantage. However, Overwatch characters have copious amounts of health which makes this less likely to be successful unless you have a stun option, which is going to give away your presence anyway. Matchups like Reaper vs Genji, McCree vs Tracer, Winston vs a sniper or anything vs Symmetra are significantly more one-sided than Pyro vs Spy)
EDIT: Do people just not play or observe other competitive scenes whatsoever, because it's pretty much a fact that mains are the norm in most competitive games with medium-to-large rosters. Overwatch is just not one of those that has this property.
I remember sub-25 quick play being a nice place. Obviously this was 6 months ago before comp was out so I can just assume it's now entirely populated by smurfs and people who got banned.

Who cares about this tier list? You can do great with most heroe, who cares about usage rate IN A WORLD CUP with a LIMITED NUMBER OF PLAYER? Do you considers yourself as a pro to pretend like this tier list matters in any ways, or form? Because most of the time, 2/2/2 is great with whatever hero excepted Widow, Symmetra and Torbjorn.
Do you think everyone in this game is a pro and play strictly the meta? Wow, the game would be much boring if everyone had to watch this tier list because then you would never meet a good torbjorn or junkrat when in fact, most competitive mode player play them. I strongly disagree with your argument there buddy and i still think that it is not a reason to main specifically 1 character (or 4 per class).

If you think people in higher matchmaking dont look at competetive trends and tier lists you're just fooling yourself.
Its sort a huge deal if you want to actually start climbing the ranks. Even if you chose not to follow it to a T, you should be aware of it and understand why which heroes are played and why.
Let me put it this way, I fucking love playing D.Va (who would have guessed), and I still take her out in comp now and then, but thanks to the comp scene I know why she isn't played and what heroes are keeping her out. Never bring a d.va to a zarya fight.

Just because you're good with a character doesn't mean it's the best choice. They don't play widowmaker or hanzo either according to that, and it's not because they can't make you want to kill yourself by fighting you with them, it's because the other characters are just better choices.

Basically, Junkrat and Roadhog are planning a heist, trying to steal some shit from a heavily locked down location.
They have plans and blueprints, and Junkrat talks throughout the short, coming up with all these unique ways of breaking in from "mission impossible-ing" their way in, parachuting from 12 million miles up or whatever, sneaking inside boxes, knocking guards out.
All the works. Every kind of plan you'd see in a blockbuster spy movie. Finally they nail down a solid foolproof plan so complicated, elaborate with hundreds of parts that all must go off without a hitch.
Roadhog says "nah"
Cut to final scene where it's just those blowing the fucking walls apart and running off with whatever they could carry in their arms dropping shit as they leave.
