Don't panic if you will not be able to play right away from my past three days of experience on the alpha servers your first week or two will just be spent grinding generic mmo quests to level up and earn enough currency to actually build a home or boat. If you are luck enough to find a spot of land you will be able to start farming very early on but that's about it.
To actually get blueprints to make a house or boat you will need a large quantity of a currency called Gilda stars and you will earn them by doing the main story line quests. To start with you are only going to be earning 1 gilda star per quest and as you level up the quests will be further and further apart taking longer to complete because you will need to do other random quests to be a high enough level to go to the area the main quest is in. Boats can cost anywhere from 50 to 400 gilda stars and then you will need the resources to build them on top. Houses cost anywhere from 15 to 1000 gilda stars but the lower end houses are extremely tiny and probably not worth your time.
So just a warning the game is really fun but don't think you will be doing the cool stuff until you are a few weeks into playing. I am a level 20 and I have around 24 something gilda stars as my story quests now give 2 gilda stars per quest.

by the time you're around 30 you should have 50 gilda stars which is enough for a bigger boat, lower end houses may be good to have as place holders because land gets taken up quickly.
People can also resort to planting on open land if they want to get a lot of materials quicker. I knew nothing about this game, got a key a day before the first beta, got 35 by the end of the beta. But if you really want to get a lot of wood you can risk planting trees out in the open. I've done this 4 times (first 3 times were 100 yew trees, 4th time 150 aspen trees). You can get a TON of wood from that. But it's very risky to do if people find your trees.
Once you get your glider and around 1.5 gold I suggest upgrading it to the ultimate glider, it's so much better.
Joining a guild would also be good, as the open sea naval battles can get pretty large.

Learned that deep sea diving gives a ton of xp even at higher levels, I went 36-40 in under an hour from just mining, and got 500 raw stone / 500 ore doing it.
(I had the labor exp tonic on) was getting 2k xp per vein and there are a TON.

haven't started playing yet, but do you have to have a special item to do this?
I've heard this name from time to time but only recently checked it out and it looks like a lot of fun. If anyone had an extra key to pass around i would appreciate it if theres no one else who's been waiting longer and if not, does anyone know of any up coming key give aways?

To do the deep sea diving? you can get a potion to breathe under water for 45 mins.
For open land planting you just need the seeds that you're planting, anyone can mess with them though.

It's best to not be hyped. If you're constantly pessimistic, you can have the feeling of being pleasantly surprised.
I don't think there's a way that any early access game can live up to its hype.
Just stay optimistic.
The minute the beta launches, servers shit themselves.
And even if you can log in, the Beta is still offline.
