Use SETA, that just solved half your problems.
Also, don't rate yourself, it looks silly.
Freelancer is legendary.
I have completed the single player 4 times over.
I have booked and written down the location of every level 10 cannon.
Its basically a free mmo online.
Easy to get into, not boring.
My first day of X3
Dreadfully confusing cut scene at the beginning.
I got stuck in turret mode
Go to waypoint (5 minutes to get there) minutes going to system transition-or whatever)
Dog fight (pretty interesting)
7 minutes flying to another system.
Spend 20 sodding minutes flying toward the station.
Get to space station, get quest.
Spend 30 minutes flying to another neighbouring system in a 70% slower, civilian carrier with one rear turret.)
Pick up the passengers.
Start flying back to the station.
Oh no! pirates have appeared!
"Pirates? im sending a fighter sqaudron now!" says some badly voiced lady.
2 minutes of swaying side to side whilst being hammered by 5 sodding fighters. Of course, i have one turret that has no chance of hitting the fighters and flying at the same time.
I get blown up before the local fighters even get to me.
In short, X3 was the worst gaming experience i have ever had.
Sucks that your first impression sucked. I suggest you read the manual before playing the game next time.
It never told me that : /
It's not the kind of game that will hold your hand, and tell you what to do.
It's a bit like dwarf fortress of space, in terms of learning curve, but once you have the basics down it's amazing.
You should try out the cheat package and bucketful of mods so you can taste the many, many things you can do.
Also, yeah, set SETA to 1000x, makes life 100x faster.
As do jump drives.
I really wish people would at least read the manual or any guides before giving up and complaining the game is too hard. It's understandable, it is slow and somewhat boring at first but given time it can become very satisfying once you establish yourself. This is probably one of your best resources for help besides the manual, http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=162408 . I don't know if all the links are still active but it pretty much covers just about everything across X2-X3TC.
Playing this game, all I've been doing is trading ore to and fro. Great game, since I'm revising at the same time!

Mods are best mods!
Bought this yesterday at the sale and started playing it today. The game is confusing as fuck at first, but you only have to calm down and take your time.
So I'm starting off my career by trading around Ore Belt peacefully, when all of sudden some fucking massive alien fleet composed by fucking pricks flies around the sector while I'm flying around.

They go away and they don't harm me in any way, but the assholes destroyed a factory AND the solar power plant that basically was my main source of income. Annoyed by this, I keep flying around on my way to an Ore mine, when they fucking come back destroying even more shit and they chase my little mercurius and they kill me.
Fucking alien jerks.
The game spawns a couple of these invasion forces early on. I guess you got unlucky.
Got the golden edition on sale yesterday, installing it atm.

Your luck: Below shit tier.
The game keeps (keeps as in when one is destroyed, makes another one somewhere else), and spawns at the beginning, exactly two (2) Kha'ak invasions into Random Sectors around the universe.
Well, my ore belt trade is going well. I make over 20k a run when trading Energy Cells to the Ore mine.
But I've borked the prices too much, so I'm just gonna wait a bit for either the buy/sell prices fix themselves or the Ore becomes less expensive so I can trade that in the mean time.
Well..... with my new joystick, i tried to get back into X3.
Got confused on starting quest, but found this:

Should show you where to go. . . . I need to play them again. . . .
Does the AI rebuild stuff? Like if some batshit crazy aliens blowed up a solar power plant by casual circumstances they will rebuild it and everything will be as normal?
Right now I loaded an autosave and I escaped from Ore belt (just as the alien fleet was coming back :ohdear: ) and explored Boron space a little bit, did a mission to retrieve some fucked up ship and made a few trades, but not of great profit as Ore Belt was. I'll have to look for an Ore Belt v.2 (possibly without the fucking aliens, yes, I hate them) or trade not just within a sector, but in multiple sectors (which takes a fuking load of time even with ETSA or however it's spelled)
Also, this game is not complicated, in my view it is too simple and needs more depth in some areas.

Trading across multiple sectors is often a lot more profitable than trying to stick to one sector. Even if you're only trading in energy cells, there might be a station gagging for them in the next sector.
To help you spot good trade routes you can buy navigation satellites and deploy them by ejecting them out of your cargo bay. You can view the prices of any known factory as long as you have some property (such as a nav satellite) in the sector and your ship has the trading system extension.

Nice stuff to know, just made a quite nice deal by buying some power cells that were litterally pouring out of their stocks and found a factory that was struggling to get them on the next sector, made some nice cash, I'll use the satellites tip next time!

The GOD engine, which monitors the economy, will set up new stations if the supply is too low, though it sometimes deletes stations (like a lot of Terran factories) which under produce. It probably won't set up new stations in the same area, though.
i need to put more time into x3:tc, it seems uglier than i remember the x series being though is there a mod that fixes that? also do ships have proper cockpits?

I dunno about improving the graphics (haven't checked for mods), but there is a cockpit mod, no cockpits in vanilla, only a 'fuselage' view I guess.
I still think the game looks fine for what it is, except for explosions which are kinda lame.

It gets rebuilt, it takes some time but it'll return. Maybe not in the same spot it once was though
Thanks so far for the tips

God is that one of the sectors east of Argon Prime (The Hole, something Clouds...)? Took me like 10 minutes to find the gates even after googling a map my first time

yup, didn't SETA because I feared crashing against some asteroid or structure or anything really, so it was a slow long trip
where the fuck is X4
I seriously hope X4 will have a new mangement system. Running a trade empire and huge fleets of ships is pretty much impossible. Needs some smart management AI that you can configure.
Didn't they say- oh wait they didn't, that was Mass Effect 3. . . . Purhaps after they've sold out the Superboxes?
