Sorry for the Bump but I don't want to open a new thread.
I have tried to get started at this game for over ten times but I just quit in the very begginning when I start as a merchant. I somehow can't earn any notable profit from cells.
Only earn about 80k credits with Cells, then move onto Ore, that should get you into the multiple trade ships range, then they trade within a single sector until they hit level 8, then they can upgrade to a universal trader and trade between sectors. The profits start to nearly double with each ship you buy, but getting each one fully upgraded with the hardware takes some hard cash, so the first couple will be tough Of course you could always just declare a faction one you don't like and hit their trade ships and hope the pilots eject, then claim the ship for yourself

And yes, this looks great. [editline]22nd April 2011[/editline]

Please note that I am NOT a beta tester any more and this is my blind speculation of the aspects of the game, if/when I am bound by an NDA again I will have to abide by that. First of all, since the game is based on the X universe (although an X universe unlike the previous ones) we can safely deduct stuff from the background story of the game. In the X universe by the end of X3:TC there are four known FTL (relatively speaking) travel methods. The old gates, left by the ancient ones. The jumpdrive that works in the same principle like the gates. The Earth gates, practically the same as the ones made by the ancient ones but the Terrans have the capability to make them. The Terran Orbital Accelerators, not FTL with the full meaning of the word but a very fast mode of travel. Now we can add some insight we have gained from the trailer/screenshots. I can safely say that there are two types of gates in the game and some form of a 'freelancer spacelanes'. Since the gates are visually totally different than the gates we have seen so far, we can only speculate about their functionality. In the trailer it speaks about a cataclysm/supernova that changed everything, that means that the old gate network is gone (after all it is a changed X universe). That leaves the various races without a proper mean of FTL, even the jumpdrive must work in tandem with the old gates. Now if somehow the races acquired the Terran gate technology they will have to construct a new network of gate systems which will be totally different than the old gate network (new borders, destroyed systems and etc should be taken into account). The orbital accelerator tech is probably behind the 'spacelane' effect, if I am to be a judge, the 'spacelanes' are a quick way to move from one part of a large system to an other. If this is the case then we can safely say that systems in X:R will be massive, much like the old freelancer ones. Big ships will probably have their own means of fast in system travel, leaving the spacelanes to small ships and freighters. What I am worried about with the above approach are the factories and the various build elements of the X series. Egosoft has mentioned that the game fully maintains the mantra of Trade, Fight, Build, Think. With that in mind I believe that they have found a way to work around what kinks their new approach may have. Finally bringing this speculative post to a conclusion, am I the only one who thinks that the cataclysm/supernova is because of the hub?[/sp]
Just as I was supposed to focus on completing my thesis, the Rebirth hype has reinstated my major boner for X3:TC. Think I'm going to pick up where I left it, learning to board. I've got a well equipped Cobra (and a complex producing flails and hammers), with a few medium trained marines. Any starter tips?
Got two. 1. Fuck thesis 2. Don't die Oh and 3. Take down their shields before sending marines.
Not THAT much of a starter tip. I was rather going for a rule of thumb on taking their shields down / getting them appropriately low without wrecking the ship. Something along the lines of this tutorial: edit: Well, figures. There's a good tutorial on the ego forums: http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?p=2921468
Also what you need to do to unlock what starts http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=222810 Made by me.
Thanks, but I'm pretty sure I'll just stick to what I've earned with the Terran Defender start, having two major complex hubs, a Cobra, Osaka and Atmospheric Lifter, with the Terran and Fury campaigns finished and half way to getting my own sector. I believe that before I get bored with this game (which will probably ber some time after building an HQ) I'll be playing Rebirth rather than starting over.
Sorry for the Bump but I don't want to open a new thread.
fucking awesome, let's hope they retain the mind bending complexity but make it slightly more approachable for new players
It would be so awesome if they added multiplayer, but I think that feature would have been all in your face in the release trailer if they were planning on it.
So there is going to be a new X? Finally! I have both X3s, used to play X2. I can't exactly run them on my laptop anymore but they were awesome games none-the-less. With only a few issues that made me stop playing. I can't wait to see where this "rebirth" goes.
Another question, then. I can't seem to get my freight drones to work properly with my M2. I've seen people say they assigned the capital ships as home to the drones, but I dont' have such an option. When I initiate any ware transfer, the drones grab the wares they are supposed to and just stay in space. Any ideas? Do I need carrier command software maybe?
I don't remember, make the M2 their home thing and order them to return home?
Whats the deal with equipment in XTC? I can't find any of the common equipment in stock anywhere, getting rather annoying that half my ships lack Fight Command Software Mk1 and have no navigation software.
fucking awesome, let's hope they retain the mind bending complexity but make it slightly more approachable for new players
I think that half of the fun for me was figuring out what the fuck was going on, mindlessly exploring until I finally figured out what to do.
IMO the problem was not how to start, the problem is how long it takes to get started. As long as you find a simple guide or ask some friend you know what to do, basically go buy cheap, sell expensive. It just takes a lot of time to get a decent amount of money and start doing stuff. But that depends on the player, some people might enjoy that I guess.
Whats the deal with equipment in XTC? They don't produce weapons themselves so if you want lasers/missiles/shields you're more likely to find them at the factories that produce them. Although the Terran stations do keep very well stocked for shields.
I don't remember, make the M2 their home thing and order them to return home?
That's my problem, I don't have any "Set home" command for the drones.

I like the idea of fighting around the infrastructure of space stations. Hopefully that means the AI can worm around the buildings now - in TC you could hide in the middle of a military outpost, and any fighters attacking you would turn away long before they got into firing range.
I really need to get back into X I bought the mega box set with ALL of them in it but I've only played a bit on X3:TC. I need to learn how to play it :saddowns:
I could never get the hang of any of the X series. If I picked a fight, no matter how big and powerful my ship was, I'd get shot down before they do. I onced hacked in the highest tier ship with the most turrets on it just so I can go into an epic battle. As soon as I started the battle it was over in 5 minutes with my death. All turrets set to auto attack hostiles too. Full shields, best weapons. It didn't make any sense. It kind of turned me off from the X series. I can't exactly play it anymore either since I'm running on a laptop now.
You should have seen me fly around in my Advanced Discoverer scout ship. I loaded four IREs on it, and was so maneuverable, I could orbit most fighters. Problem was, if anyone hit me, even once, I was dead. Simple as that. Incredibly difficult but so much fun.

I'm terrible at combat too. It's those pesky M5's that are impossible to hit that cause all the problems. Trading is where I spend all my time and I'm pretty good at it.
There are no tiers in X... You mean M1?
Which ever the Titan and Mammoth is. Mammoth for transporting stations, Titan for protecting the Mammoths. Either way, a fully equiped High Class ship of that size shouldn't be so easy to take out, even if by another of the same class.
The fuck are you talking about titans and mammoths This isn't ice age Anyway I presume titans would be M2s and Mammoths would be TLs. Oh wait I think those names are used for those classes sometimes.
