Thanks, I am guessing trading is a necessity, but what else is there to do, just the main plotline?
You can ignore it completely and just spend the rest of your life exploring all the sectors. trading isn't really a 'must' ... You could always just pirate against a specific race, claim their ships if they eject, make the ships dock at a shipyard and then sell them. Kill trade ships and take the cargo, or get a police license and kill enemies of whatever race you bought the license for
So, how the hell do I fly a ship :psylon: ?
Thanks, I am guessing trading is a necessity, but what else is there to do, just the main plotline?
I never really did much trading when I played. Most of my time was rolling around taking missions to defend stations or shoot down pirates and other targets. They'll net you a ton of cash later on as you gain experience.

I don't know how to get missions, noone in stations will give me any. And to TheTalon, I don't know how to do half those things, the only things I know how to do is the flight tutorial.

Well normally with a mouse, you'd hit space to activate the Mouse Follow mode, where the ship follows your mouse like the game Freelancer does. The alternative is to hit CTRL-N to directly control the ship with the mouse.
Z and X control your throttle
W A S D control the strafe drive
Q and E roll the ship
Left Control will do boresight fire - basically, shoot at the crosshairs. You need to use Boresight fire to use the autoaim function available with the Fight Command Software upgrades
Target shit by clicking it, or hit T to target whatever is infront of you.
Open a communication with stuff (within 25 km) by hitting C
By the way, go into Options >> Gameplay, and set one either the right monitor or the left monitor to "Auto Target", and the other to "Auto Missile". Auto Target will make a little view of the thing you're targeting appear in the corner of the screen. Auto Missile will open a small window on the other corner of the screen, which shows the nose view of any missile you fire.

Also yes, how do I fire missiles? I sold my missiles at the station before I took the rest of flight school.

M will load a missile type into the launcher, and L will fire it at whatever you're targeting, unless it's a dumbfire missile like the Dragonfly.
What should I do when I start with the game, what goods should I trade?
Beginner here.
Yes, I would like to know what junker asked too, and how do I get missions for pirates and whatnot and how do I get out of terran space?
If you start in Argon space, trade space fuel (it's illegal so dodge the police patrols), silicon, energy. If you're in Paranid space apparently soya shit is good to trade between sectors.
When you get enough money you can try trading weapons and shields between factions based on availability. Big potential for profit there.
A problem that has been bugging me for a while: Whenever I travel at SETA X10, I get an odd, laggy smoke trail in front of me.
Any solution? Any way to disable the smoke?
Mouse > Joystick

So trading is the big thing in this game? I thought there were more ways to make major money, guess not. Well, if that is the case, then this game may not be right for me, because I find the trading very, very, boring.
That's alright Lifehole. Just trade until you have enough to buy a couple more freighters, then install trade software on them. You can make them trade on their own, then you can go off and do whatever you want to make money yourself. Mine asteroids, Pirate civilians in hopes they eject to capture their ships, Pirate freighters for their cargo, kill pirates in space where you have a police license, do missions and what have you that you get from stations. All that good stuff
And the best way to start out, at least when I start out, is I picked the Humble Merchant custom start, which disables the plot line and opens up just the sandbox portion of the greatest single player space game since Freelancer. I go South through Argon Prime, and Home of Light to Ore Belt. I pick up Energy Cells from the Solar Power Plant (SPP) That's in that sector, and take them to the Ore mines that are in the same sector. After about 3 trips like this, I take the Ore from those Ore Mines and sell that to the stations that need it in Home of Light/Argon Prime.
You'll go from about 10k credits to 80k with Energy Cells, then 80k to 250+k with the ore. By then, you should know who needs what resource and where to get it within a couple jumps since during flight you should be examining each station in the sectors you're in to see what goods they require, if they require any, and what goods stations are selling. You can get pretty wealthy trading within Argon Prime and 2 jumps from that sector in any direction, and the space there is relatively safe. You can also buy a medium Ore Mine for about 230k. All it needs to run are Energy Cells, (And an Asteroid with a decent yield of Ore, of course) then you can set your price for the Ore and NPC ships will come buy it, as long as an Ore Mine in the same sector isn't selling it for cheaper, I normally set my prices pretty low, regardless of my stock. Or you can take the ore and sell it yourself and leave the price high, Or if you have another freighter, order it to Sell Ware For Best Price and it will take the ore and sell it on its own. Remember it will require Energy Cells, and uses up a bit per production cycle. If you have a second ship that carries decent cargo, have it supply the cells to the station automatically. Yes it will go out and buy E.Cells on its own out of your wallet, but as long as the Yield on the asteroid was decent, you'll be turning out quite a bit of profit
Eventually your automated traders will level up to level 8, where they can (And if you don't buy it yourself) order a JumpDrive for about 100k credits, (Cheaper if you buy it for them, but 20k difference isn't shit later in the game) and start trading across the known universe instead of within one sector

I think that is a problem with the engine. It was mentioned a while ago, but I think it was Xenon_Slayer who stated that it is impossible to remove it without editing the engine (which is not going to happen). All it is is the smoke trail from your ship, appearing in front of you as you fly because of how SETA works in the game. As for disabling the smoke, you could install a mod that removes all smoke trails from the ships, or changes them.

As for starting the game, lifehole, you should be aware that "Products cannot be sold" and "Resources are not brought". (God, I hate those phrases)
How the shit do you fly with a joystick?
Loading shit before firing? THAT SHOULD BE AUTOMATIC MOTHER OF GOD GAME WAT.

This sounds awfully complicated, and I don't know how to do ANY of it, I find trading extremely un-entertaining. I got this for an experience similar to freelancer, oh well. I didn't think this game was all about making money.
Well you can't buy a new ship, or upgrade your current one, or eventually control an entire fleet of ships without money. Just starting out sucks if you're not into it. Soon enough though your AI is making you your money
Fixing Page 30.
Dear god I hope the new X game is way easier.
I mean, I could probably deal with trading, its that, what else is there in the game besides trading killing ships and delivering things and buying stations and repeating?
Endless amounts of Mods that allow you to do more...
Like Sector skirmishes between the races, the ability to take over sectors and claim them for yourself, pirate and xenon invasions, etc
Yes, but where do I download these?

Someone link this man the wiki.

Dear god I hope the new X game is way easier.
My impression is that Rebirth will be a lot more like Freelancer than any games in the previous series, with its trade lanes, crowded universe, combat around station infrastructure, and non-pilotable capital ships. But if we have something like the accessibility and combat of Freelancer with the empire mechanics of X, that's pretty much the game I've been waiting for.
