I think it's time for my annual reinstall of TC. I'm glad this thread is sort of revived.
reinstalled it and I STILL get "this game is currently unavailable" for fucks sake steam
It's probably more to do with the Steam servers being overloaded during the sales than your installation of the game.
Couple of questions: How are you supposed to capture ships? I've taken out their shields very quickly and severely damaged their hull but they don't seem to give a shit. Where are you supposed to buy salvage insurance?

I just spent 15 minutes shooting at a solar power plant with an M3 only to find out it becomes magically indestructible once it reaches 93% hull...
Just keep trying on the ships As far as salvage insurance, goners used to sell it... I think it's military bases now?
If somebody's being a dick and refusing to surrender forever, just give up blow them up for being naughty and move on to the next?
If somebody's being a dick and refusing to surrender forever, just give up blow them up for being naughty and move on to the next?
Yes, just pound away at their hull at a steady rate and if you see a communication starting to open, STOP
USEFUL: eng.x3tc.ru Has pictures of all the ships in the game, ship statistics, all the freebie ship locations, and ware locations MASSIVE spoilers for some ships though. Don't search the Terran ships unless you want to ruin the end. :v:
Couple of questions: How are you supposed to capture ships? There's several factors (hidden from the player normally) which influence how likely a ship is to bail. Target ships like the "High Tech Traders" which fly M3s; they're more likely to bail than an escort ship for a TS. You can buy Salvage Insurance at: Earth (but seriously, don't even try to go there until you complete the Terran plot), OTAS Headquarters, the Terran Orbital Defense Stations, Terracorp HQ (in Home Of Light), and in the Free Argon Trading Station in Heretic's End. You probably just reached the point where the station's shield generators recharger faster than you can damage it.
Fun Fact. AI Solar Power Plants don't require Crystals to manufacture energy cells. And if you made it a requirement, the entire economy would collapse

I finally captured a Boron Dolphin... Several hours ago. I kept dying during various piratey things (Bloody fighter drones). It was down to 51% hull so the engines were mostly broken and it had to crawl at 25m/s over two sectors to reach the nearest shipyard. Oh well, 450,000 credits for me. Not a bad start. If only I could get so lucky again...

I find the easiest way to get pilots to bail from their ships is to bring down the shields and then slowly nibble away at their hull. PBEs are perfect for this. If they're going to bail, they'll usually do it at around 70-80% hull strength. If the hull drops below that, chances are they're going to go down with the ship and you should just finish them so you can move on to a new target. If your target is a trader, you can comm them and order them to drop their freight. It doesn't always work, but it's more reliable than hoping for a bailout and you can score some very shiny stuff (ie. capital ship guns from weapons dealers) if you're lucky. Fighter drones can be countered pretty easily; turrets with fast-firing weapons tend to make short work of them, and if that fails there's nothing stopping you from bringing your own drones! :D

Of course when I finish repairing my hull using the spacesuit laser (Since shipyard repair costs are beyond unreasonable) from 75% to 100% a squadron of pirates appears as I'm docking to save the game and blow me up. Fucking mechanics. It seems like every time I try to do anything ever outside of a core sector I get swarmed by pirate fighters. Always. I can't even seem to avoid them, they just appear out of nowhere and fuck me up so I have to reload a save at the last station I was at which is invariably several sectors away.
75% to 100% a squadron of pirates appears as I'm docking to save the game and blow me up.
I remember when I first started... I'd been playing a few hours and captured a couple of M5's and M4's and I saw a pirate Kea escorted by a couple of M5's. I decided to give it a bash with my Sabre to try and get some reputation. Anyway, I gradually dug away at its shields(And destroyed the M5's) until I got down to the hull. Unfortunately, I accidentally hit a stupid Solar Power Plant with a few shots that missed which really upset the stupid military whose sector I was in, although I didn't bother at the time because I only intended on destroying the Kea. Then, with 20% hull left it decides to bail(I cheer, very excited.). I go and claim it, unfortunately it's stupidly slow because of its hull damage. I realise that the military M7 in the sector could cause me some trouble, so I fly away to the nearest station and save the game. I rush back and grab the Kea, the M7 catches up with me and starts firing it PPC's and destroys me in no time. I reload and try to repair it slightly to try and limp back to a station with it. This fails again so I try setting the Kea to autopilot and trying to distract the M7 in my M4, this fails again because for some reason the M7 decides it still wants the Kea. I try the same strategies again a few times but never managed to keep the Kea. Shame, that was a few million credits of ship destroyed.
Is the autopilot retarded in this game? I told my other ship to dock at the station I'm at, but the ship just flips back and forth and goes anywhere but the station.
Is the autopilot retarded in this game? I told my other ship to dock at the station I'm at, but the ship just flips back and forth and goes anywhere but the station.
Indeed it is. I've never(or rather, almost never) used autopilot for docking, or for anything really while in sector. You're luckier than a lot of people though. Most people complain about it crashing their ship on the side of the station. What is rather amusing is when you're doing a "defend the station" mission and one of the enemy fighters fly straight into the side of the station. Try going out of the sector you're in, that should help.

That's um... very flexible.
So, what I gotta jump out and manually dock my ship? That's um... very flexible.
Either that, or leave the sector. They still sometimes mess about even then though.
So, what I gotta jump out and manually dock my ship? That's um... very flexible.
Just turn the autopilot off, open comms, request permission to land and approach the green dot at 40m/s or less.
Just turn the autopilot off, open comms, request permission to land and approach the green dot at 40m/s or less.
He's saying that he's piloting one ship and wants another ship that he's not piloting to dock with the autopilot; hence the "So, what I gotta jump out."
Should I start playing from the first game?
Is the autopilot retarded in this game? I told my other ship to dock at the station I'm at, but the ship just flips back and forth and goes anywhere but the station.
Order it to do something else, wait for it to fly for like 3 minutes, then re-order it to dock. The AI spazzes out when it gets a collision detection and it'll get stuck in an infinite loop. Alternatively, you can order your ships to dock when you aren't in the same sector; it's far faster as there's no collisions (and thus, no need to avoid large objects like asteroids) in sectors you are not currently in. [editline]11th July 2011[/editline]
Should I start playing from the first game?
Good god no. The first games are unbelievably hard (first game: start with 1000 credits, no SETA, a slow ship, and no guns) and have a very confusing interface. Start with Terran Conflict, and if you want to see the differences over the years between the games, or play the plot, THEN go back to the previous games. Just skip X3: Reunion entirely if you do that though; gameplay wise, it's pretty much a harder version of Terran Conflict with less stuff in it.
If your PC can't run Terran Conflict though, play Reunion
Just turn the autopilot off, open comms, request permission to land and approach the green dot at 40m/s or less.
I do believe that it is 38m/s from memory. after a week and a half and a reinstall I still get "this game is currently unavailable" what the hell steam
