I'm having a hard time making a vehicle capable of moving at a decent clip while still being able to turn. All my machines are so sluggish, I can't even drive up a ramp. How do you build decent steering?

I feel like an idiot for not considering multiple wheels.
I'm trying to make a propeller helicopter-type thing, but even if all sides are equal in weight it still flips over and crashes.
How do I get around that?

I don't really know how to counter the torgue, what should I use?

Counter-rotating engines?

It's important to have a center of mass lower than your blades, rotating wings help to stabilize your craft, and some sort of bracing that doesn't rotate with your blades from top to bottom. Bowing propellers or collective wings are pretty much the best ways to create variable lift, which is very nice for having a smooth degree of control over the craft.
I have absolutely no idea how to make anything cool using the more complex tools, so I just made a fuckeverything tank thing.

Arrow keys to drive
KPAD 0, 1, 4, 7 - Fires left side cannons
KPAD ., 3, 6, 9 - Fires right side cannons
Q, E - Fires the two frontal cannons
Is motionblur native to the game?
So I just realized, while trying to recreate that piston engine thing above, that you can cram even more propellers onto a wooden beam. Wheels and cogs both allow something to be built on them, but one is a half-block higher than another; if you place a wheel, put a wooden beam on it, put propellers on it, then delete the beam and wheel, then put a cog in place of the wheel and another beam coming up from it, the propellers will be located halfway between attachment points but still hold onto the beam.
stop it i already hit the speed limit with 4 props

the outer wheels should be the turning wheels instead of the inner ones
that way you can keep turn while moving forwards, or stay in place and spin like the one in the link
it's objectively superior

Ooooooooooooooor, you could not have twice the amount of wheels you need.

arrows keys > tank controls imho
i usually go with left arrow for right wheel forward, right arrow for left wheel forward and back for both backwards
this way you just press both to go forward, press one to turn slowly, press direction + back to turn fast/in place
arrows keys > tank controls imho
for something with actual steering and not skid steering maybe
arrows keys > tank controls imho
Why? Is it too complicated for you to use other keys or something?
4 keys and 4 wheels to accomplish the exact same functionality as 4 keys and 8 wheels.
Simplicity & efficiency > redundancy & needless complexity

Here we go - no excessive wheels, and you still get to use arrow keys!
Can you lock your camera behind something?
My aircraft keeps crashing because the camera can't track it properly.
Middle click on any world or block location to center the camera to it. This is explained in the tutorial.

but you need two hands to control the vehicle, and you might want to operate some gadgets at the same time
but you need two hands to control the vehicle, and you might want to operate some gadgets at the same time
not really
i use q,e,1,3 to control it all
q+e = forward
1+3 = reverse
q+3/1+e = turn left/right
and you can also use just q or e to turn, however less turning radius that way
it's that simple

This doesn't lock the camera behind it, it locks it on to track.
I meant to keep the camera at a fixed direction relative to the vehicle.
Turns out it's kinda easy to make a self-balancing quadcopter.

What? That setup doesn't need two hands to control it at all. Unless you've got some seriously babby hands going on, you've still got a ludicrous amount of controlability you can have while using two fingers to control movement.

The scroll wheel changes the camera distance relative to the middle click locked block or world position. I don't know what else you could possibly want.

So, you lock the camera behind the source block, for example.
If the source block spins, the camera stays locked to that face of the block - so if it spins, the camera spins with it, get it?
Kind of like.. Docking mode in KSP?
oh right
yeah you can't parent the camera angle
[editline]4th March 2015[/editline]
somehow i feel like it's about time for an update of some kind
[editline]4th March 2015[/editline]
imagine how awesome a level with some lava would be in this game's lighting and wood physics
[editline]4th March 2015[/editline]
or a level in the mountains just so that you're not allowed to use plane parts to make a jump (because of the freezing of flying blocks at altitude)
My main complaint is that you can't get the camera to basically stay in a fixed position relative to the machine - you can center it and get it to track, but if the vehicle turns, your camera doesn't.
New environments would be neat though, it'd be an interesting challenge to overcome. Also, maybe new building types that are resistant to certain types of destruction, like how castles are only destructible with bombs; have some buildings you can only burn down or knock down with a boulder or have to be pushed down by the machine.
