The Speedrun Thread -- Didn't get a critical hit? Reset the game.

I can't believe Im following around 15 people on Twitch and in the past 3 days none of them have been streaming when Im on. I can't sleep well if I don't fall asleep watching a speedrun.
Quick question:
If a game runs faster at high FPS, is it legal as a speedrun?

Do you mean faster than it was intended to go?

If that was the case people wouldn't need to do lag reduction
If you mean emulators, no. You have to run on a console the game was released on.
Thanks guy
I'm thinking of running need for speed prostreet on the wii, but I've run into a hitch.
The problem is that the game allows MASSIVE sequence breaking using a code entry. The code entry required to activate a glitch I want to use for streamlining the game also unlocks the entire game map (as its normal function). I've now run into a moral problem: how the hell do I run it? I haven't found any other people who speedrun this game, and because of that I don't know the stipulations for a legitimate run. Does it have to go through four kings? Do I have to run the full map spectrum? Most of these I can route as any% and such because I haven't found anyone else who has run the game.
However, my biggest concern is the use of code entry. My question to you guys is, if there is a game that has the ability to enter cheatcodes natively (not through gameshark or similar), would it be a valid run if I used it?
Animal Crossing runs (the 100% one at least) use code entry.
Oh wow, never knew there was a speedrun thread here.
Does anyone know the Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis Any% WR? This is the fastest time I could find, but I'm currently running it and have no idea what the record is :v:
Animal Crossing runs (the 100% one at least) use code entry.
Oh ok!
This is going to be one of the weirdest games I'm going to run. It requires two save data files, several consecutive hard resets, and 5 races total.
Changed the route for the better

you can speedrun on whatever you want
the sonic 2 world record was done on an emulator for example
its just up to the game's community to decide on whats allowed or not

IIRC, emulators are okay as long as they accurately replicate what playing the game on a console would be like. Emulators like Project64 2.0 aren't allowed because they run N64 games faster than their console counterparts, for example, while older versions of Project64 are still okay to run on.
Gotta love comments on speedrunning articles:
There is absolutely nothing impressive about this. When I clicked on this article, I expected someone to have claimed a legitimate title. Not some silly glitched or modded version that somehow warps you to the end.
The game has not been completed.

If it is indeed some kind of praise worthy skill to finish the game in this way and then freak out at someone who doesn't feel the same way as you, maybe you should reevaluate your life. I don't actually care that much. It's a dumb record. My opinion. I don't need some silly keyboard warrior telling me I'm ignorant or that my comment is invalid.
Get a life, buddy.

There's no pride in that. Putting all this wasted effort in finding ways to beat a game as fast as possible. It just feels pointless.

It's not a sport. At all. Leave people to their opinions. "The entirety of the speed running community obviously feels otherwise"..... My God, man.. Sad. You're just sad.
And the best one (response to the one above):
Of course it's wasted effort. He could have been a productive member of society and being a drone, but he decided to waste his limited time on Earth playing a video game. But then again, this entire life is a waste. Humanity is a wretched, depraved species in the words of the homocidal maniac Elliot Rodger. And I agree with him: all humanity does is put each other down to raise the self up. Ignore that this is wasted effort: everything you do is wasted effort, everything has an opportunity cost, just live life in the way you see fit...which is obviously getting women or getting got if you are a woman.
It pains me that this thread gets so much attention but Trials gets no love. :(
This thread has died multiple times.

afaik dolphin has a problem with the JIT interpreter where it doesn't play exactly as a console would

has anything been said about this in the speedrun community? there's alternatives but the game runs a lot slower from what I've heard

I'd love to get some Trials discussion going on but I'm afraid it's not popular enough to keep a thread going. Sadly part of the reason may be because of Fusion's awful port that made the game run at 70% speed the entire time for me. I still can't beat the last set of levels because of the slowdowns and input lag.
4.0-1706 - Fix frsqrte and fres by magumagu
Despite already making several really big accuracy changes, magumagu returns to the list again with two huge fixes. One of the jobs of the emulator is to play the games as they played on the target console. As such, one of the most frustrating things about emulation is when a childhood favorite doesn't play just as remembered. That worst case scenario had been plaguing Dolphin, with popular games such as Mario Kart: Double Dash suffered from the complete inability to accelerate properly while turning!

But it wasn't just Mario Kart: Double Dash; Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Sunshine, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Resident Evil 4, Mario Party 6, 7 and many others all had significant issues. It wasn't just physics errors, this problem could result in impossible to complete levels all the way to completely broken graphics.
So what was causing all these calamities? Well, in one of the interpreter functions deep within Dolphin's CPU core, it turns out some of the instructions were being calculated too precisely of all things. In particular, estimation instructions frsqrte and fres were the culprits. By making Dolphin answer exactly as the console, tons of problems simply vanished.
Fixed issues 4576, 4684, 6096, 6100, 6888, 7014, 7153, 7158, 7292 and likely others.
there still might be inconsistencies left though

I have a question, it's probably been answered before so sorry if it has. How do speed runners collaborate? I've seen quite a few speed runs and they usually have multiple runners (at least the really hard ones) working on different parts of the run. How do they work together to have a cohesive run? For example lets say runner A does one level, and then runner B does the next. Since games are usually sequential in this case and share resources, how do they work together? Would runner B just wait until runner A does what he considers his best time and then gets the information from him about things like ammo, health, etc? Or is there some sort of standard established that allows runners to start each level at some agreed amount, for example with the resources provided when simply loading the level instead of progressing to it?

It's honestly a lot simpler than that. Everyone participating in the speedrun attempts a certain 'segment' of the game, and when someone manages to attain the fastest time they believe is possible, they save the game immediately - this save is then passed on to the rest of the runners.

I am literally amazed at how a news article about a near-perfect run of TLoZ:OOT has people go Tumblr mode in the comments.
Also, why do people even think that glitching means it's not a "real" speedrun? What defines a "real speedrun" then?
What I think is most annoying is explaining speedrunning to people that haven't heard of it, and then they bring up the typical, "Isn't that glitch just cheating? If you're going to do that, just use the built in cheat codes."
Using built in cheats isn't a challenge, numb-nuts. It makes me completely and irrationally angry.

Oh hai sndrec, I didn't know you were here.
Hello all, I'm completely new to facepunch but I guess I just want to share what I do and what games I run. I am a Zelda speedrunner, currently working on Ocarina of Time Any% [PB 25:52] on PAL Gamecube and then I will move onto Twilight Princess All Dungeons after I get a good OoT time.
Also, Ocarina of Time is really hard to speedrun lol
On my Twitch.tv is a list of my PBs and links to the videos. I have one tied world record.

Ok thanks now it works :)
What defines a "real speedrun" then?
The people that say shit like that, they consider a "real" speedrun to be just a "Let's Play", basically. Like, just play the game without making any wrong turns or taking too long on a boss, that's a "real" speedrun. It's dumb, they're dumb.
