well fuck fighting against the welsh then
Fighting them in 1257 does become a lot easier if you manage to fight them in a forest and it's not just bowmen*.
Hilled forests especially. You have to keep yourself at a distance and stay on the defensive. Hopefully you have some cavalry units because you'll want them on "follow me", and run off to the limit of the flanks.
If you have enough infantry, they can soak up the melee units of the Welsh pretty well since they're usually stock-standard and not as effective as the mercenary units you'll be hiring.
Wait for their main infantry lines to be walloped a bit, and then set your infantry on charge. Wait for them to crest the hill (or more likely: get shot to shit D-Day style), and then charge into the archers from the back with your horses.
Fighting the Welsh, you will suffer casualties. But here's some good tips:
- Most of their units lack armor
- Their strength is in their range
- Their cavalry are fairly poor and small in numbers
- Most of their melee units are militia-esque
- Only their lords have high armor and damage capabilities in hand-to-hand

Yeah I basically have paper notes on the side, because even if 1257 is a bit wonky, they do have some fairly solid unit choices.

I bet it's going to be kinda like elder scrolls where you can choose modules that overwrite the base game and each other depending on load order.

I know. That's going to be so awesome. That also means that there will be a lot more mods now, i.e uniform or portrait mods.
"Why do you say that" you ask. Well, since you could only have one mod loaded at a time in Warband, it made it difficult for someone to justify making, say, a face/music/aesthetic mod, since it would get in the way of regular gameplay.
Now, we can have "Xtra Big Titties" alongside "Realistic Checkerboard Textures" while also having "Ragdolled Entrail Models".
The furthest I got in 1257 AD was becoming a crusader, being given a really OP piece of armour and then..
crash.

I wonder if board games can be played in multiplayer.

Can't wait to settle a war against Vikings that have raped and pillaged every village for miles by beating their Warlord at chess
Is 1257 AD being updated again? I always enjoyed that mod the most -- probably solely because of the feature that switches you to a soldier in your army when incapped.

Legit though, I could see a server where it's just a bunch of modded board games and the option to "bar fight" people.
It'd be the most 'lax chatroom ever
Imagine.
"Right, so you conquered three quarters of my land, raped my wife and destroyed the capital, and stripped me bare. Let us resolve this by board games."
You win.
"I forgive you."
I hope feasts have more impact. I'd like there to be certain dialogue events that are hidden only at feasts, so there could be real intrigue going on.
I hope feasts have more impact. I'd like there to be certain dialogue events that are hidden only at feasts, so there could be real intrigue going on.
Feasts in Warband and the original aren't really feasts. All they are is
"Hi."
"Can I have a job?"
"No."
"Bye."
The closest to feasts with actual impact is the very basic courtship system.
"I love you."
"Generic response."
"Okay."

And like, the intrigue doesn't need to be hardcore Game of Thrones stuff, just things like
"Hey Lord Poopsucker do you like King Scrotaltearing?"
"Just between you and me, and since I feel now's the best opportunity, King Scrotaltearing is a bit of a cunt"

And here's hoping the AI is like some of the mods that I've played.
I mean, I don't want large army combat to be a third-person total war game, but I do want the fights to be a little less "Zombie Defense", you know what I mean?
Like, if your army was a bit superior, the enemy would just bumrush you instead of try to fight it out.
Yeah. Most of the time in warband I just end up holding formation near spawn on a reverse slope or something and wait for them to come to me. Would be nice if the command system intuitively allowed for something deeper than that.

I always thought that if you could do that it makes combat faster and more fluid.

I really wish that taleworlds would stop pussyfooting around with selective realism, and just make it so that weapons with wooden hafts can be broken. If you try and block a sword with a wooden haft IRL, that wooden haft is just going to get sheared in two. I like how Vikingr handled this, Two Handed axes and polearms should deliver extremely devastating attacks, but should have little/no defensive qualities, players should have to parry/chamber-block attacks in order to use a two handed axe for defense. Greatswords should just be really expensive, leave you vulnerable to missile attacks, and have a high likelihood of hitting nearby teammates when swinging (so you either teamkill, or get stunlocked as a penalty)
If two-handed polearm weapons were turned into dangerous glass cannons that require chamber-blocking, then it would actually be a weapon type that you would need to achieve mastery over, rather than just being some dickish noob-cannon with no serious weaknesses. Likewise, now that you can hit multiple people maybe two-hand users will need to avoid fighting in crowds

And then naked swadian greatswordmen would reign supreme over every other faction. It's already quite expensive and people already just abandon all other equipment to get it if low on money.
edit: generally just better weapon hitboxes and lowering twohander swing speeds across the board would fix a lot.
edit2: come to think of it expensive two handers are already a glass cannon solution due to the usual lack of armor on the people using them.

From what we saw with the combat animations they are fixing the "hold sword/polearm horizontally to your left to block a swing coming at you from the left" thing. It will probably look a bit less silly to be blocking weapons with wooden hafts if it's at an angle.

Being able to hit multiple people just dont make sense, at all. Not even as a design choice. You're already disencouraged from doing heavy swings in crowd-fighting by friendly fire (which isnt a problem in sp, granted), which, if you're a good player, will limit you to thrusts and upward attacks, unless you manage to clear an opening on your left or right.
This is just gonna superencourage people who go lonewolf as they can much more easily fight 1v2 or 1v3, even.
edit2: come to think of it expensive two handers are already a glass cannon solution due to the usual lack of armor on the people using them.
Armor doesn't do anything in warband, we've been over this on previous pages. A naked guy in warband running around with a greatsword is just a very slightly more fragile cannon that moves and attacks faster. It's basically the difference between being hit 1-2 times and being hit 1-3 times
I'd be very much all for naked people getting killed in one hit by anything larger than a dagger. There's not a naked man on the planet that would survive having one of these shear through his rib bones. Not to mention a longsword being swung at speed would be quite capable of removing unprotected limbs with absolute ease.
This is entirely why baseline armor became so common in medieval warfare. Somebody wearing little more than bare flesh wasn't worth the weapon they were carrying because even the most baseline weapons like axes and hunting arrows will wreak incredible havok on bare flesh, and even the most baseline padded armor will provide substantial protection. Taking your armor off should be *possible* but should not be advisable in any circumstance, it should be completely and totally impractical to go into battle without any armor in M&B.
