so random out of the blue idea
what if scanning amiibo in mario maker let you play as a version of that character (locked to a specific sprite set to cut down on assets needed) that had physics similar to the appearance they're based off
for instance
-Mario: Jumpman from Arcade DK. low jump, can't survive falling too much or touching an enemy. 8-bits only
-Luigi: Mario Bros Arcade. high jump, weird physics (can't change in mid-air), can't touch enemies and has to hit them from below. 8-bits only
-Peach, Toad: SMB2 physics, can't stomp but can pick up enemies and throw em. Peach can float, Toad is fast and strong 8-bits only
-Link: Zelda II physics and sprites; has the up and down air thrusts, shield, jump height is as if he used the Jump spell. All Zelda series characters unlock this, but they have different colors so people feel special (like Red for Zelda as if Link used the shield spell) 8-bits only
-Kirby: Kirby's Dreamland physics and sprites. Can suck up enemies and spit them out. All Kirby characters unlock him but Dedede/Meta Knight have different palettes. 8-bit
-Samus: Metroid 1 with morphball, missiles. ZSS does Justin Bailey but is otherwise identical. 8-bit

I'd go with the brand new 300 dollar one that comes with a game, like Mario Kart 8, then get Splatoon when it comes out.
It'll cost more, but it's worth the money imo.

minecraft is a big hit with kids that age right? funny how some kids like that actually do say "nintendo is for babies!" then go and play minecraft and casual cute mobile games.
the whole middle schoolers/high schoolers playing nothing but m rated multiplayer fps thing has largely passed. most people in those age groups today are playing angry birds and candy crush.
I haven't been hanging out with any middle schoolers lately so I can't speak on that.
