Probably to make them look more dynamic than the Unibos from Super Mario Land 2, which are also based on Gordos and could serve as an analog to the NSMBU Urchins:

The SMW Bowser and SMB Bowser Jr seem to be the most off-model ones, though I feel that several, such as the SMB Thwomp, fit the style well.

Splatoon is a new IP and not butchering a well known series for the second time in a row. Splatoon also didn't have a mess like that animal crossing board game alongside it.

I don't remember hearing anything negative about Splatoon when it was revealed. I thought most people were intrigued but didn't expect much from it.

People, including myself are pissed about this federation force game because it's going to get panned, and Nintendo is going to take this as "I guess people don't want Metroid" Most likely shelving it for another few years.
Not to mention the Metroid franchise has been hurting for a good game seeing how miserable the last one was.

Metroid Prime: Federation Forces would be like if F-Zero's next game was a Mario Kart clone complete with zany items and cartoonish levels (no I am not referring to MK8).
It's something that no one asked for from that community desiring a series revival and is clearly something else with the brand slapped on to try to reel in those fans as if they only know a game series by it's title.

Kirby didn't have Kirby: Other D though, epic yarn was piss easy but at least it still kept to the Kirby tone, just... even more harmless than usual.
