I think ALBW gets too much credit. It was fun, but I don't think being go to the the dungeons in any order really added much to the exploration or open world exploration. I mean you got all the same parts, but shuffling them around doesn't add up to anything greater than the sum. A good open world isn't just about letting a player go anywhere, but constantly giving the player something unexpected for impulsively wandering.
On the other hand, I found the 2d Link gimmick felt extremely well executed and meshed very well with the gameplay.
I was kinda of sad that Lorule was just a Hyrule of disconnected chunks (tho explained later in the game as to why it is so).
If they didn't had the crosses around the map telling you where to go, it would have pushed the player to find the dungeons in Lorule, especially in the small area they were placed.
However, let's not forget that, compared to its prequel on the SNES, Between Worlds was built on a handheld console, which influenced the way they planned the game and its contents. That's why it felt quite short and somehow easy.
All of the kirby games you mentioned however use powers, have energetic themes behind them and are generally in tone with the others- minus Avalanche
Tilt 'n Tumble, Pinball Land and Mass Attack don't use copy abilities as part of their gameplay. :/ (Unless you count the RPG subgame in Mass Attack, where the abilities were used as moves)
As for Magolor he may of used magic in his races and stuff but don't forget the credit scene after the races.
Fair enough.
Yeah but that's what I'm saying, they finally did something new with the series. Think about the last couple Zeldas before ALBW.
Besides Skyward Sword, they've all been great.
Wow, they all have a relatively similar structure, well observed. Shame that completely ignores everything else about the games - their mechanics, the world design, sidequests, overall tone, aesthetic and story.
But no, Wind Waker is exactly the same as Majora's Mask because it lays out its dungeons in the same way.
Mechanically all of the 3D Zelda games are extremely similar so I don't know why you thought it'd be a good idea to include that in your list.
Story-wise they're all relatively similar when you boil it down to their roots. Sure some characters get switched around, e.g. Demise and Girahim instead of Ganon and Agahnim, but it's still the same old Hero's story.
In terms of tone I'd call Majora's Mask a pretty big divergence, but the other Zelda games are all pretty similar in tone. Again, still the same old Hero's story.
Dunno why you think side quests make a game unique, especially since in Zelda games they're relatively inconsequential except to get a bigger wallet or a bigger bomb holder or something.
I'm glad you brought up Majora's Mask though. It's one of my favorite Zeldas because it didn't feel the need to follow that formula so closely (unlike Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Minish Cap, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword). Again, I'm not saying following the Zelda formula inherently makes the game bad, simply that there is a pattern and it wouldn't kill the series to diverge from it once in a while.
Stop acting like I'm pissing on your first born child for pointing this out.
Besides Skyward Sword, they've all been great.
Why do people keep giving Skyward Sword shit?
I also felt it relied wayyy too much on nostalgia without doing much to set itself apart from the painting mechanic- and after using the painting mechanic for a good part of the game the only time they dared to try something interesting with it was during Blind 2 and the final boss fight.
I assume you're referring to lttp with this? Being possibly the only person that did not like lttp on this planet I feel that LBW was probably the best thing that's happened to the zelda series in a long time.
Why do people keep giving Skyward Sword shit?
Because it's too long, too linear, too many damn cutscenes explaining puzzles you've already figured out, And FI.
Also the equipment system was terrible. It was a great idea implemented horribly.
Oh and Dousing...Christ I forgot about that.
Petition to rename The Wii U Megathread to "X series is dead because I don't like the spinoffs/the most recent entries" or "The Thread where Sift cries about everything that they don't like"
Skyward feels worth playing to the end because of how fun the ending sequence is.

Plus the music.
Possibly the artstyle but that's a matter of personal taste.
I just found Skyward Sword fun in pretty much every way, probably my favorite Zelda next to Twillight Princess.

Lol grow up if you can't handle someone with a different opinion.

Should clarify that while they don't have powers they still kept the tone I look for in the Kirby franchise with the music and look in general- only one really debatable to me being Pinball land due to being a gameboy game AND the fact that most Nintendo games get a random pinball themed spinoff like Mario and Metroid :v:
Music like this isn't bad by any means, it just doesn't have the same energy that I'm a fan of.
(slight edit with boss 1 of both games)
Will fully 100% admit that I don't remember much about tilt n' tumble though. I think I played that like... once or twice then never again due to the gyro being busted.
Yeah I'm pretty sure that's the problem most people have with it. I see dudes trashing on FF's gameplay when we've only seen like... 20 seconds of supercut. It could be fine, it just seems like the final line everyone draws is "why wasn't there a real metroid alongside it"
Edit: I'm now watching Tilt N Tumble gameplay as a aside. Oh god why did they try to make Kirby have a voice in this game it's all garbled
Edit 2: EY EY EY GREY ERRY
And pushing Wooly World off to the Youtube page and add in Fatal Frame and something like Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon or something.
So according to some sources there will be different modes in the AC amiibo festival game, if that is really the case then why the heck did Nintendo decide to only show the board mode?
That's one of the many reasons why the game is getting a lot of hate, because it looks similar to a Mario Party spin-off. If there are more unique modes then Nintendo should have showed those instead. Seems like a no-brainer.
Is there a game mode that isn't a board game? Maybe something closer to New Leaf? No? I hate it.

From what I heard the other modes aren't ready to be shown off or something. They have confirmed minigames though and some mode where you have to build a raft to escape a island in time.
I personally don't think Metroid or F-Zero is dead, I think it's more like they can't think of ideas.
It's just easier for them to push out a Mario game every couple years because it doesn't need to change all that much for people to buy it, and honestly, i'm okay with it. Fucking loved 3D world.
(But no, I'm not okay with F-Zero and Metroid sitting, just okay with the Mario games is what I mean.)
Just take what we had with GX, significantly visually update the engine, add a bunch of new tracks, add a track builder, add a machine builder (with Mii pilot), and add 30-person online races.
F-Zero UX
[editline]19th June 2015[/editline]
Also add a unique splitscreen mode where two players can play with a whole screen to themselves, one with the gamepad and the other with the TV.
We got Star Fox again, we'll definitely get Metroid and F-Zero again. Probably not until after Star Fox U has been out for a while.
We got Star Fox again, we'll definitely get Metroid and F-Zero again. Probably not until after Star Fox U has been out for a while.
Don't forget that Zelda U is eating resources and time too.
It really depends on who's going to be making the next Metroid or F-Zero. Platinum is making the new Star Fox game but they're also making a shit ton of other stuff. Retro Studios would be the most likely contender but I can see Platinum nailing F-Zero.
Skyward sword is the only Zelda game I've played and just given up on it. A bunch of factors for the game just made me lose care in it, and it just wasn't fun. There was also a few characters that were just obnoxious. Combined with the motion controls, it's genuinely the only Zelda game I just plain didn't like.
I'm curious on the new Zelda still, since it's been delayed to next year and we still haven't seen or heard anything on it.
I wonder what limits Mario Maker has as a engine. The bullet bill blasters seem to be able to fire anything so can they like, fire a infinite stream of Bowsers? I'm having a hard time seeing the engine not screaming for mercy at like 7 Bowsers in one place.
Also wonder how long you can make stages.

Super Mario World styled airships, that's kinda neat!

lol come on man I disagree with Sift almost all the time but there's no need for a completely out of context cheap shot like that, Jesus christ
It's actually pretty neat that they made a brand new SMW-style remix for the airship level design.

There's a NES version too. Pretty cool.
[editline]20th June 2015[/editline]
Only thing MM is really missing is
-Slopes
-Water in stages with land in it
That Yoshi is using the jump sound and level clear theme from SMW2: Yoshi's Island (which isn't present in SMA3: Yoshi's Island), are we getting Yoshi's Island assets in the future?
EDIT Nvm probably just amiibo related. :(

Yeah, definitely Amiibo. But I wouldn't mind some DLC in the future that expands creation abilities, or lets players mess with things from other games like the Land titles, or so forth. And if people can hack Wii Us to a degree, it's only a matter of time until people start replacing variables to cause crossovers between themes.
Is the amiibo stuff only available for the NES tilesets?
would be interesting to see various characters in NSMB style
