I first met Satoru Iwata at TGS in 2005 when I interviewed him for G4. He spoke in Japanese and showed off the Nintendo Wii controller.
So at the end of the interview, after the cameras were off, he turned to me and started speaking in English.
"Geoff, I really liked out interview. I can tell you are a gamer so I wanted to show you something." He turned the controller sideways.
He held it like an NES controller with D-pad and the A B buttons. He smiled, I think to hint at Virtual Console. I'll always remember that.
I felt a great connection with him then, he wanted gamers to know that Nintendo would always think of us. He was such an honorable man.
His smile said so much. He was and is one of us. He loved game, and wanted to make the world a better place with them. And he did.
dorito pope made me sadder than before as usual
wow this is super sad.
It also makes me a bit worried about the future of Nintendo.
Miyamoto is nice and all but he really shouldn't be at the head of the company...

He'll figure something out quickly, he likely doesn't want to be president again and he will probably hand it off to someone he feels worthy.
I think I'm gonna play some balloon fight tonight. Iwata was a good man and really put his heart into the company and his job.
Miyamoto has been defaulted to current interim president of Nintendo (jointed with Genyo Takeda), but based upon his previous distaste of high management positions, it might not be long before a proper one is nominated.
Question again is... Who?
I feel it will either be Genyo Takeda (major developer for the Wii, helped direct some of Nintendo's very first arcade titles, creator of Punch Out!!, creator of StarTropics, works primarily on the hardware aspects of Nintendo) or Tatsumi Kimishima (ex-president of Nintendo of America, current Managing Director, president of Pokemon USA, worked in Japan, USA and Latin America and is aware of both western and eastern interests, handles primarily financial aspects of Nintendo).
Miyamoto does not strike me in the slightest as a guy that would enjoy such a position and would probably rather be closer to the game development like he is now.
What about Reggie?
What about Reggie?
RIP Nintendo.
What about Reggie?
Considering the state of the North American virtual console and the lack/delay of releases compared to Japan and Europe of major titles, I am not confident he would be a good president, especially since I think the fight vs Hungrybox has made it pretty apparent he doesn't even play games when boasting about beating someone in said game nearly a year before while making a compilation reel showing him "training".
He's certainly a good marketer and a showman, but I don't think he really sees eye-to-eye with gamers, certainly not as a gamer. He also has not had a major role in the development of any particular game, unlike Takeda, Iwata or Miyamoto who definitely did.
What about Reggie?
I doubt a Japanese company would make a non-jap their president, especially since Reggie can't play games for his life.
Trinen would be a better candidate imo

Reggie is already a relatively high-ranking official in NoJ's structure, just as Iwata was in NoA's.
These two major wings of the company are (and have been for years) a lot more closely knit than you might think.
Yeah these last couple years Reggie has been pretty blind. Whoever is next I hope they have a big, nice bright future for Nintendo.

Reggie is just a PR guy though, I'd rather someone that has experience in games and can actually jump in Smash.
Sakurai should be the next president
Here's hoping the new guy is as resolute in ignoring the shareholders as Iwata was.
shit man i don't even know what to say right now
i think i'm gonna pick up earthbound again and beat it this time
Sakurai should be the next president
I genuinely feel that he is one of the last Nintendo-affiliated directors/programmers/developers that should be considered for such a role. He didn't even seem happy that he was working on Smash 4 (heck, in some interviews he practically looked pissed) after a while and he seems far more interested in what he thinks is good for fans than thinking of what fans think would be good. He also tends to be stubborn and headstrong about what he believes in and has proven with his affiliation with HAL Laboratories that he'd rather leave the company he is working for and found a new one than make additional iterations for series like Kirby, as quite a few of his coworkers seem to note that he was not fond of the concept of sequals.
He died doing what he loved. RIP Iwata.

I would be afraid of Sakurai doing himself in just like Iwata :(
Sakurai should be the next president
From what I know of him, I don't think Sakurai would like that. He seems like someone who always wants to be making something new, not mantaining legacies or helping others along. Look how much he hates making sequels, can you imagine if someone told him he couldn't make games himself at all anymore?
A good developer doesn't necessarily make a good manager. When naming names you have to consider their legacy with the company, not just how well-known they are.

I guess, but I would want someone that's as passionate to video games as Iwata was to run a video game company.
This has been a very suddenly sad day. I've never met Mr.Iwata, but you don't have to do so to know that he was a very kind, sincere man that loved to do what he did. It's always the greatest people.
Rest in peace, Iwata. I'll play some Balloon Fight for you.
I feel pretty bad that I mostly took him for granted and usually only thought of him as another regular person who just so happens to be president of a company. I guess I just didn't knew much about him before.
i only knew about his work on earthbound and SSBM. i didn't know about the stuff he did for the pokemon games or how involved he was at HAL. always respected him but didn't fully realize how much the guy actually did. i don't know much at all about the CEO's of any other big gaming companies though so i guess that says a lot.
I'm actually unsure as to who will take over as CEO. Didn't another guy there not want to be CEO for some sort of reason?

Miyamoto doesn't want to be the CEO and he was constantly moving away from the position to focus on smaller games. All honesty it sounds like he's been gearing up to retire.
Takeda has been getting groomed by Iwata for awhile now to take over and his ideals line up pretty well with what Iwata stood for- but the catch is Takeda is 66 years old so he's no spring chicken himself. Ideally he takes over and starts training someone right away.
I went to sleep just before the news broke apparently. What a shit piece of news to wake up to. It's been said to death at this point but god damn, R.I.P. Mr Iwata.

Are there any really good Wii U games out, digitally/physically? I've got Smash 4, Mario Kart 8, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and Splatoon. I was thinking about getting Bayonetta 2 but I'm not much of a person who likes sitting in a room punching enemies down for a minute straight to go to the next room.
