Oh, pro-tip about MP10 if you ever get another chance to play: that first Mushroom Kingdom map is the most boring one. The other three are way more interesting; I particularly like the cloudship one.
Also definitely give Bowser mode a try.

Also, Super Mario Maker comes out September 11th, but if you've never played a 2D Mario game before, then I'd try one or two of those out first.

Besides what everyone else suggested to you, I recommend you also get a Wiimote and look into some older Wii games too. Like Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, as well as Twilight Princess.
Then on the Wii U side of things, look into picking up the Metroid Prime Trilogy if you're into those kinda games, seeing as you've never owned a Nintendo console, you've probably never played a Metroid game, so uh, if you ever played Castlevania: Symphony of the night and liked that, you're probably gonna like Metroid :v:

It's out of production and didn't sell amazingly well. Didn't break 1mil units.
A shame, 'cuz I think it's probably the best looking Wii U game hands down, even now.

Dedicated to Wii U. The drive gets formatted for Wii U use only. It isn't possible to partition it either, to my knowledge. You may need a USB Y-cable, because the Wii U doesn't output much power through USB.
If you don't need MUCH space, a flash drive will work, and won't require a Y cable.
Otherwise, your best choice is a cheap powered external HDD.

the wii u has low power usb ports, so you'd need an externally powered drive

I've got a 64 gig USB drive stuck in mine, works fine enough.
There's something you've got to do though, a weird hidden feature to prevent the drive from turning off while playing.

I would just get a power external hard drive. They're only around $30-40 more and you can at least 500gb to a 1tb.

One of the best playing too. I got it for free with Mario Kart 8 and it's absolutely amazing, and the gamepad controls really added to the experience. 10/10 game. I hope we get a Pikmin Trilogy or something down the line so people have a chance to play those games.

Honestly just imagine Pikmin 1 & 2 with Pikmin 3's graphics and mechanics. God I'd absolutely love it if Nintendo did that.
