How might I go about plugging it into an external storage?
and will it make me format it before use?

Plug it into the wall and let it 'boot' up for 30-60 seconds, then plug it into any of your Wii U's USB ports (I suggest one in the back). It most likely will format the drive to be FAT32 (lmao) then you can set it up to install and save games to it by default in the settings.

I wonder if it does come to a Metroid game being announced then would Nintendo do what they said at E3? That if a Metroid game were to come on the Wii U then it'd be like a Prime-ish 3D experience and if it came out on the 3DS it'd be a 2D game.
