DKC is ok since it forms the groundwork that the other 2 games takes into account and is pretty barebones. 2 is much darker but the platforming and collection elements was nicely constructed, even their hidden world was pretty cool. But i kinda disliked how 3 played down the darkness to make it seem more cartoon-like.
Also the world exploration elements felt a bit wasted, even when there's hidden banana birds, the ending for that game just doesn't seem that serious. you enter the Kremling's land, defeat mostly animal bosses including a sapient Snowman, and a Robot who seems to be using Donkey Kong's lifeforce to fuel itself, the secret ending itself just had K Rool having a giant eggshell fall on him. it's more jarring than the arguably epic moment when he gets dumped into an energy beam in 2, which may or may not have almost caused the Kremling species to be rendered extinct.
Plus there's some weird hate about Kiddy Kong for some reason. maybe he was a bit plain when compared to Donkey Kong, whereas Diddy&Dixie as a duo in 2 felt fresh; the Kongs had their own abilities but it was purely superficial such as DK being able to roll through/jump on Klumps and Diddy being able to have a few seconds of gravity-free air rolling. but since DKC2 introduced team methods, like Dixie can do really long jumps, but Kiddy is a slow cannonball so he doesn't look that action packed in comparison.
DKC - OK, but might be slightly dated. the graphics at the time were pretty good however and the gameplay still holds up today.
DKC2 - Atmosphere is amazing, kind of a large jump from jungles to some sort of [I]The Goonies-esque[/I] pirate adventure, Dixie is well received and gives Diddy a bit of spotlight. the hidden world could be pretty sadistic in uncovering but otherwise is pretty tight-knit.
DKC3 - the overworld gives a feeling of free reign, but you're shoehorned into trading sequences and required world completion to continue to other worlds. it starts to get a little extreme for the collection elements with said sequences....again, there's some weird emphasis on Kiddy, and everything is bright and cartoonish for some reason. it's better than DKC1 but most of what made DKC2 is still there.
I dont like the 3rd one. 1 and 2 are my fav
I've always like the donkey kong series but the first one always has a place in my heart.
I think it was the tree-trop town levels that I loved so much. The music and all was my favorite.
And I've never played them on the SNES, I had them for the gameboy advance.
I will agree that DKC3 was a bit more different than the first two but there was something I always liked about it.
I actually think 3 is better than 1. 1 I find abuses barrels way too much for my liking. So a lot of the platforming gets stale. They got a lot of the nuances DKC is known for in 2, which is probably the best.
Donkey > Kiddy though.

I don't think it changes the levels at all, but it's completely free on every platform (yes, including 3DS).

It was my second purchase on the wii u store after I bought Earthbound. I had a little money left and I couldn't afford shovel knight so I bought it. I didn't hear all the hate for it until after, I thought it was a funny little gag game.
