The thing that I dislike the most with MK8 is the coin item. I've had races where I'm in first place and I get 3 coins in a row, with 10 coins already collected. Fuck that item.
Ugh, The more I play mario kart 8, the more I hate it. The gameplay is quite fun and really good, but the items just plain suck. If you get hit by anything, it's absolutely devastating and near impossible to catch up without good rng. Screw the coin powerup for starters. Absolutely useless, and you lose all your coins anyways because the guy behind you got red shells. Mushrooms are useless imo. Due to the increased speed of the game, any speed boost you get with them is not really noticeable at all, and many of the tracks don't have effective shortcuts. Bombs are annoying. I've screwed myself over way too many times because my bomb hit something and caught me in the explosion. Also being chained hit by items is the most frustrating thing ever. Because they ramped up the last few place's items. Items were overall nerfed, but now they're somehow more annoying than wii ever was. MKWii had overpowered items, but they balanced out because you could regain lost ground with them more easily.
Mario Kart Wii's items made it a heaped steaming pile of shit and I don't know how you could possibly have fond memories of that game

If you go off ramps red shells can hit you from below now as well as green shells bouncing back into your face so defense isn't always possible- excitebike highlights this a lot. For stuff like that it's nice to instantly pop yourself back to max speed as the coin raises your limit and gives you a small boost when you use the item. It was buggy beyond reason, the item boxes were aggressively shit and little to no effort whatsoever was made with the retro courses and some of the new (at the time) levels.

Mario Kart 8's items like the boomerang actually require you to aim.
the worst thing i could remember about mkwii was the atrocious fps drop in local multiplayer
mkwii had some of the best tracks despite being one of the worst mario kart
I dunno guys the items in wii were super balanced. (I wish I had just the gif version but hey short notice)

Yo get in here, 200CC racing. Racepunch 9945-0620-9501 I'm challenging everyone including the walls [editline]6th May 2015[/editline] face me c o w a r d s
I always thought one of the side purposes of the coin item was to prevent the person in first place from having an infinite stream of Banana shields. So, shenanigans aside, the person in first place would be vulnerable to a well placed shell from time to time.

Still, getting a coin in 9th place on the final lap can ruin your day.

Man which one of you guys live in Japan? Surprised me! [editline]6th May 2015[/editline] I got lightning'd into my own green shell I was dragging :v: I didn't know that happened. [editline]6th May 2015[/editline] OH GOD THE BIG BLUE RACE FLANE WHY Home stretch and got bumped and did that anti-grave boost right off the course :v: [editline]6th May 2015[/editline] Neo Bowser City wouldn't let me drive for some reason near the start... then the items happened... HELP [editline]6th May 2015[/editline] I let out a primal scream at the end of that grumble volcano race [editline]6th May 2015[/editline] Uploadin my two favorite races of that set but good games to the group of dudes that showed up!
Damn I would've joined but I just opened the thread
Two replays, sorry about all the posts but I had a lot of fun :v: Mushrooms are useless Hell

I've said it before and I've said it again - mushrooms aren't meant to just give you a mindless boost in MK8. Use them for shortcuts/cutting corners or to quickly get back up to speed after being knocked around.
I'm so proud of that last fireball.
The worst part is it hit me and I was like "Arrgh I lost this one." but had enough time to go "Wait! Maybe I still have this!" before the ending happened.
So I just beat EarthBound What is it with Itio's games that always manage to make me shed a tear
HEY. No crying 'till the end.

i used to play Mario Kart DS i thought it was great
I feel people who haven't spend a lot of time with the game tend to think this. There's a super good reason why players who get 1st tend to keep getting first even when blue shelled. I'm trying to think of a way to say it other then the typical get gud meme but... it's really the case of it. Mario Kart 8 is a lot more technical then the others in the series and if you can tell how to cut a line well you can snake through items and reclaim spots pretty easily. Nothing's going to save you on lap 3 if you get item fucked and it's frustrating yeah but... it's also mario kart. It's what's been in the series sense the start and it would feel odd to start getting mad at it 8 iterations in. Just practice if you need it I guess, Mario Kart 8's easily the most balanced out of all of them- coin items are the only things I can find frustrating but if you don't just throw them in the trash the second you see it in the characters hands you can hang onto it in case you get hit and... suddenly you're back to 10 coins and full speed. Mushrooms negate all off road traction so you can take a assload of short cuts if you're patient enough (as well as cut corners, there's a lot of physics objects in the game that act as "walls" you can blow through). Hell off the top of my head I can't think of a single course that doesn't have a spot that you can't use a mushroom to shave a ton of time off of a lap and catch up with if timed right. MK8's probably the best the series ever been from a pure racing standpoint. [editline]5th May 2015[/editline] Does FP have a room for 200cc? I wouldn't mind racing a bit now that I've talked about the game. [editline]5th May 2015[/editline] This is true. 200CC makes it a lot more frantic due to the game rushing to calculate things though so you can get some pretty funny results
The thing is, I usually get first on Mario Kart 8. (even online) But it doesn't matter how good you are if you keep getting coins (got 4 coins in a row), or chain smacked with items. (The majority of times I've lost was due to being hit by 8 items or so in a single race)
i used to play Mario Kart DS i thought it was great
I loved mario kart ds. IMO best mario kart (AI were super easy though)

It's a decent balance, IMO. If I want to play a pure-skill kart racer, Sonic All-Stars is a better choice. Or just a normal racing game lol. Most of us on this forum are what we'd call "core" gamers, and that tends to warp our perception on games that are meant for everybody, not just us. How often do you play competitive games that you never, ever win at?
i used to play Mario Kart DS i thought it was great
it still is
Mario Kart DS was amazing. I got my original phat DS with it as a pack-in game and it was hype as hell. An extra set of cups (Retro tracks), custom carts for each character (where you can unlock an extra one, then the ability to use a few other character's, and eventually use any kart with any character), unlockable racers, mission mode, decals (which were fun even if everyone was driving a goatsemobile or Hitler's go-kart), online, DS Download Play in case someone doesn't have the game for whatever reason, etc.

In lap 3 you can see people getting further ahead of me and yet I still managed to come in first. Yeah it's against one other human racer and the rest oddly hyper competent AI but still, there's a example off hand of being able to recovery pretty damn well without any attacking items (all I got in lap 3 were mushrooms)
Look at what I manage to get my hands on. Now I'm playing with power! [T]http://i.imgur.com/2o6fr88.jpg[/T]
That's pretty cool, does it actually feel right or can you tell right away that it's a replica? It looks kinda big n' all. Another example as a aside. I kept getting hit with items and getting literally nothing but mushrooms and coins in this race. I wish I could put up the whole thing but recovery is possible in these maps if you can handle it.
That's pretty cool, does it actually feel right or can you tell right away that it's a replica? It looks kinda big n' all.
It feels good. It's light but doesn't feel cheap-made (well it's from Club Nintendo Japan so it's genuine). Now that Nintendo finish with the DLC for MK8, they just need to do one thing: add an actual Battle Mode, not that bullshit that they have now.
At this point I can honestly feel safe saying give up on battle mode. It's... not good and it probably never will be but I doubt they'd go "wow pack 3 battle mode!!" I know I'm not in the majority here (or I don't think I am anyway) but it never bothered me too to much. Battle mode has always been a fun novelty for me that I play a few rounds of then never again. Do people actually sink a lot of time into it?
