So I found out the hard way to Give Up on an SOS mission ASAP if i'm trying to do a mission for a stage. It's not only a real pain in the ass to find whoever you're supposed to rescue (i've only managed to clear one SOS mission so far), but dying to any of the numerous instant death pits in the game instantly fails the SOS mission and boots you out to the world map screen instead of giving any options for retries or continuing the stage without the SOS. If you clear the stage and did mission conditions but didn't rescue the SOS? Also counts as a failure, your results don't count and you're also kicked out to the world map. It's the little niggling things like this that really piss me off.
In all honesty Ghost Town really isn't a half bad Classic Sonic level in general. Actually I like it more than most of the Classic Sonic levels in Generations. Feels nice and open and sprawling, with some neat path choices.

I don't get why they thought a water slide with enemies that bonk you, sending you flying on top of fighting the controls to not fall off it was a good idea... Also, only putting bumpers in the middle of the edge of halfpipes. I think only the harder path should've had helpless motorbugs. No wonder speedrunners quickly found a way to skip the slides.
Casino Forest is also real annoying. I swear hitting the bumpers even slightly differently than before results in completely different bounces, and I actually got stuck at one point for half a minute unable to stop bouncing around because of a bunch retardedly put together in close proximity. And even if you amass a bunch of rings, expect something to propel you into a spike ball to lose it all anyway.
As disappointed as I am with Forces, at least it gave us the air boost:
Here's my opinion of the game based on what I've seen of the gameplay and story: -The story reeks of numerous rewrites. -Classic Sonic was clearly a last minute addition -Stages feel like they were chopped up to artificially extend stage amount. -The game is currently kinda buggy (though nowhere near Sonic 06 and Rise of Lyric buggy) All of the stuff above leads me to believe the game was very rushed and had a rocky development cycle. Overall, it doesn't seem to be the worst Sonic game, it looks okay to me, but it felt like it could have been much better/much more then what we got.
Yeah, I can confirm the story was rewritten a few times. It wasn't as extensive as you think though.
Yeah, I can confirm the story was rewritten a few times. Because the whole [sp]Sonic's words of encouragement that inspire the Avatar to fight Infinite, despite him never having actually said those words previously[/sp] kind of reeks of it.

Also why the fuck are motobugs even there? It's the only place in the game I recall seeing them.

How do you have this insider knowledge? Genuinely curious. And if you can answer, what parts of the game were most effected by the rewrites?
It's more that there's nothing really hinting at scenes being purged outside of a single extremely minor thing. Also I made a few cute OC characters. Sat down cordinated costumes and just kinda had fun messing around with em before the reality sank in that there's nothing to actually do with them unless I choose to grind stages for some reason. I'm still playing this bad game not because it's fun but because I like seeing what goofy costumes I can get. This and Mario Odyssey have woken something in me that make me fret.
How do you have this insider knowledge? Genuinely curious. And if you can answer, what parts of the game were most effected by the rewrites?
Yep, would like to know that too. That's definitely not something you can find even on fansites like tssz or stadium.
How do you have this insider knowledge? Genuinely curious. And if you can answer, what parts of the game were most effected by the rewrites?
I've been part of the Sonic community for a long, long time. I have a friend that knows a friend at SoA, and he gave me the entire plot almost word for word months ago, so I know it's legitimate. Essentially, SoA wasn't pleased with the game's story and wanted Ian Flynn to come on board and fix it, but Iizuka would have none of it, and was actually insulted at the gesture.
I don't want to seem rude but I can only be skeptical at a claim like this.
If he indeed has some connection to people at SoA then he will probably not be able to provide proofs without getting into trouble. If he does not then it's not something that cannot be true. Even Flynn himself indirectly confirmed he was in talks with Sega about that. Also let's not forget Flynn has been trying to push Sega to hire him for games for quite a while with his #Flynn4Sonic hashtag. I find it surprising that I'm not struggling with the controls like most people claimed. They really need to put more emphasis on the learning the importance of stomp and boost constrain. My only nitpick is that Avatar should move a lot slower without boost pads, it would've been interesting to have them play like a fast version of Megaman. Classic Sonic could also use a little more max speed.
I don't want to seem rude but I can only be skeptical at a claim like this.
I'm not the sort to concoct tall tales for attention, especially in this case, since I've distanced myself from any kind of interaction with the Sonic community for quite a few years. You all know my stance on the property, and it doesn't make me many friends, because you know, people are horrible for having opinions.
So I'm starting to remember some stuff so I did a little search and here we go: WARNING, GAME SPOILERS AHEAD July 2016: [t]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C_91LRSU0AAaS84.jpg[/t] April 2017 (screenshot is not made by me): [t]https://images-ext-2.discordapp.net/.eJwFwdtugjAAANB_4WFvwFwNjSZmoVzcRWANRmUvBKGWNpZWWsZl2b_vnF9r6O_W1mqNUXrrukxUlGinYbqWfVMp5XTEuA75GNM5jjI6-4mfBrD2A6mjsL9imqdx-lklz_aSefZPXQLxNpBvfoaeCk8DecFjly2ST8sDFpOBX6IuqLkdhBba2KsKMp9NkfARx1E45-V8QaCNc4QnhCUBDbh1x7LhBiabsX7XwUE5Cw_RIDbsuM9KJB_3pSyyE1DD_kpfR9aYdrdar8FTSxhtzc6D0Pr7B1gYT6g.lt72J0ogUoY6Lmh71C6PadaqVuY[/t]
Even if the story is rewritten it still doesn't excuse for the lack of level diversity. Something else must also have went wrong during development.
Even if the story is rewritten it still doesn't excuse for the lack of level diversity. Sega should do one simple thing to make this work - not force deadlines and not interfere with development process at all. This includes not letting anyone from Sonic Team to get near the game. I'm honestly don't have any hope in Sonic Team now.
Even if the story is rewritten it still doesn't excuse for the lack of level diversity. Something else must also have went wrong during development.
bad fanfic-itus can sometimes drag down development for other parts of a game when it gets simply that bad, because the developers, arists, and such go "I can't believe I'm actually drawing this shit" and thus don't pay as much attention as they usually would. For example, if you were a developer for God of War, would you seriously believe you were being forced to write code for a romantic scene in the middle of a battle? (Note: I understand it pays the bills and thus would happen anyway, I'm just saying it wouldn't receive as much of the developer's usual polish.)
While you are at it talking about how Forces was in development, let me also add to the speculation pile. If we take a look on Infinite, and then run through concepts of older games... Well, as old as Adventure 2, for example, we will find an interesting character called Terios. Who, we all know, was much edgier iteration of Shadow, basically one of his prototypes. Now we look back to Infinite. That scar, that monochromia, that amount of edginess. Which makes me, and maybe you too, wonder... What if Infinite IS Terios? EDIT: Just wanted to add that yeah, prototype Terios maybe was hedgehog, but hell, it is Sonic Team, they might have decided to change that.
God this makes me so mad. Why are his physics so garbage
When running, Classic Sonic has a crippled speed cap to a ridiculous degree. Thankfully rolling lets him pick up speed now, but his jumps are also nearly static; what speed you started the jump with is the speed he's keeping 'til the end unless you intentionally hold back to slow down. Even then, going off a ramp strips you of air control entirely. It's kind of a chaotic mess of repurposed Lost World physics from devs that analyzed Mania to recreate its animations but functionally understand jack squat about anything else involving Classic Sonic.
It doesn't stop
God this makes me so mad. Why are his physics so garbage
Because Sonic Team is only capable of realizing the most superficial aspects of 2D Sonic gameplay and recreating them through awkward scripted sequences. That, or they somehow think it's more accessible.
