Probably to distance themselves from the games as much as possible and stand out as it's own thing.
Which it did and it's apparently pretty good with some occasional greatness sprinkled here and there by the writers.
Unleashed was originally called Sonic World Adventure. All of the places in Sonic Unleashed were based on a real life location, and adopted many of the distinct cultural things.
Personally I really liked the night songs from unleashed. Shame you never actually heard them with the battle theme playing every 5 seconds.

Season 2 Finale they use them again
My friend hasn't played forces so I'm letting him do so through ps4 shareplay.
I had him start on level 25
Kinda weird how people compare Odyssey and Forces when Unleashed would be a way better comparison because of the whole 'travelling the world' thing
Speaking of Unleashed, does anyone else find it slightly disconcerting that from Adventure onward, Sonic's world has only ever been shown to be populated by humans? Come Forces, humans aren't anywhere to be found, and yet the Resistance is comprised of exclusively anthropomorphic animals that until this point have been rarities. Prior to Forces, the only creatures that resembled Sonic are the limited cast of characters we've come to know, and esoteric instances such as Tails Adventure, where the primary antagonists are the Battle Bird Armada.
The official "canon" world that Sonic inhabits is as wildly erratic as the quality of his games, despite a seeming attempt by SEGA to maintain a timeline for the story.
Was grinding so much to get all honor as every species that I inadvertantly got a WR, heh.

Drill wispon makes avatar a blast to speedrun with once you understand how to use it properly.
It's very baffling to see all those wild swings of quality meter of Sonic series, starting from okayish Adventure duo and Heroes, followed by disastrous '06, then back to acceptable Colors and Generations, followed by outstanding Unleashed, only for crowning moment of SEGA's awesome to be devastated by the huge quality drop in the form of Lost World. Then came, again, okayish Boom, and then, Sonic's fans commissioned by SEGA masters themselves brought us the flawless jewel that is Mania. Guess what SEGA masters themselves followed with? Yeah...
And please forgive me if I ordered the games wrong in terms of release days. I don't know much about it. And yes, I omitted Shadow, because it's special category.

Aaron Webber said in a Forces interview recently that the current canon explanation is that it's a sort of Sonic X but not exactly situation, where there's two worlds,
the one Sonic is in during stuff like Forces where it's mostly, if not entirely anthro animal people, and the one he goes to during the Adventure games, Unleashed, etc, which is essentially a version of our world.
Basically they can travel back and forth at will, I'm assuming through something Eggman himself devised, or some pre-existing portal, even though this is never shown as it doesn't ever happen during the course of a game.

they've also recently been trying to say classic sonic takes place in an entirely separate dimension instead of in the past so basically they have no idea what they're doing
I honestly don't understand how people can be bothered to follow Sonic lore because a shitload of it gets retcon'd, even if it was a majot plot point of another game.

The problem is that when the series started having connected storylines that reference and influence one another, especially in Shadow's case (albeit with a crapton of retcons), '06 tried to be a soft reboot for.. no real reason besides anniversary stuff, and after that everything just sorta fell apart. The series tried to have a "lore" but Iizuka and others abandoned it fairly quickly for self-contained stories that might as well be entirely different worlds every time besides Sonic and Eggman.
in terms of the human/animal problem, I always considered it similar to Mario where most of the time the background NPCs are Toads, with the human characters being the major characters. The implication isn't that there are no other humans around, since you got Wario and his gang, it's just that they aren't important to the general plot and instead you have generic characters that are visually different from the main characters. I think it's an inverse in sonic, where the humans are the generic replacement for toads. there are unique humans, sure, especially in unleashed, but I always figured that there were also forces-style animal people that just never appeared on-screen.
yeah, it's kinda odd that we never saw any other animals before forces, and there isn't a lot of real continuity, but those aren't sonic exclusive issues, just ones that seems especially noticeable in the series. I think saying all the animal guys are off-screen is a much saner explanation that sonic is jumping between dimensions off-screen for no real reason
Well there's also the fact that we've got from geometric and strange islands to a literal not-San Francisco to borderline parodies of real world locations and now trees are cubes and all we know is that areas like Green Hill and Seaside Hill are standard places next to a generic locale called City. Even if Sonic and friends rarely change nowadays, everything around them is being redone and rewritten almost every other game.

For context purposes the final boss of the game has overt 200,000 tris

I just like to think every city in every sonic game is the exact same place with a city council that REALLY can't decide on a name

That explanation doesn't make sense, when in games like Sonic Adventure, Angel Island is seen as being part of that human world. They're going to have to pull some crazy nonsensical space-time gymnastics to corroborate that particular account of things. And people say Archie's story was convoluted; at least in the beginning, it was simple: anthropomorphic animals cohabit an alien world--one that's a hybrid of fantasy and science fiction--named Mobius alongside human-esque Overlanders, rationalizing the existence of Dr. Robotnik.
That and the original Japanese translation of Adventure 1 made reference to the events of CD and S3&K.
Aaron's just a PR guy and I don't think Sonic Team themselves have ever elaborated on it, should obviously be taken with a grain of salt.
I think the answer is "Who cares"
Not in like a snarky dismissive way mind you but in a "Sonic Team literally doesn't care and is doing w/e" type way. There are animal people because they need your OC to be around. Humans are gone because who cares etc.

I mean the Moon repaired itself at some point so I'm pretty sure it's fine
They don't seem to care about quality either.
On another topic, Sonic Boom aired it's season 2 finale today and there's been nothing said about a season 3. Hmm.

It had a modest amount of viewership when it was on cartoon network, but after it moved to boomerang the viewership plummeted. Would be a shame if CN sentenced it to death by switching it to boomerang. There have been Season 3 rumors though. I hope there is a Season 3 because I enjoy the show and I actually really like the character designs despite the initial backlash.
Sonic seems dead in the water again. I don't have much hope for the new comic, and I definitely have very little anticipation for a movie that's been in development Hell for years, and that's guaranteed to flop. This is why I didn't want to involve myself with Sonic anymore.
