There's so many differing opinions, so many 'generations' of fans for Sonic, so many different outlets that it's impossible to mention something without causing a debate. I've seen people shitting on the Boost games for the boost being too easy a way to go fast, or becoming "hold B to win" despite the fact that if you actually did that, you'd either run out of boost for not using it properly or careen straight into a pit or obstacle and fuck up. Or that the Adventure games were the best things ever, fuck the rest of the series. Or the most prevalent opinion that the Classic games got everything right and that the rest of the series can go fuck itself.
It's a clusterfuck filled with misconceptions and stupidity.
This is what happens when you keep dropping game play formulas for different game play styles after every game.
This is what happens when you keep dropping game play formulas for different game play styles after every game.
It's not just that. It's also the fact that there's the Archie Comics and the Fleetway Comics, the three different cartoons with wildly different takes on the series and cast, constant spin-off games of terrible reputation, a metric fuckton of characters with wildly different reception, and the fact that Sonic Team themselves couldn't even keep a consistent direction with the games.
Adventure 1 was dark at points but is the goddamn Wizard of Oz compared to Adventure 2's downright depressing true villain. Heroes was practically a throwback to the Genesis games except arguably even more kid-friendly, until the final boss anyway. Shadow was a complete and utterly horrible means to pander to "those shooter-happy edgy americans", and '06 took itself way too seriously. Unleashed was back to more light-hearted ventures, and then Colors to Lost World all went for self-awareness to almost parody levels at times. This isn't even getting into the Storybook games.
Not a single game since the turn of the century has kept the series' tone consistent until the three games where two are considered some of the worst writing in the series (next to '06), because Sonic Team keeps throwing ideas at the wall and hoping they stick since they still don't have a firm grasp of what makes Sonic work in 3D and obviously don't want to recycle Boost-formula games over and over; you can't fault them for wanting to do new things, and people would start bitching if the same formula got reused too much because the fanbase is that bad. Though new writers and the serious tone of the Project 2017 trailer indicates that again the tone's going to shift dramatically.
I know one particular sonic cartoon that definitely needs a game to it, SatAM sonic which in my opinion is still the best representation of Sonic.
We almost got one at one point:

Not really Sonic, but would have been neat if they proceeded with this idea as a separate IP.
Just bought Unleashed to relive some good ol' fun and in hopes that Project 2017 will hit a similar feeling to it.

Honestly for Unleashed it's better to just buy Generations on PC then download the Project Unleashed mod. Warehog really slows down the game and you'll be playing him for a good 2/3 of your playtime. PU is just no bullshit since its just stage to stage to stage of the good parts. Plus because it uses Generations sounds you don't get WOOOOOO every time you press X.
I played Sonic Unleashed on the Wii. It has less speed stages then the other versions. Which is saying something.

Unleashed Wii is a different game entirely pretty much. Like it's shocking.
Also I'm literally insane as I never really minded the werehog stuff. Like I wouldn't want it to return and it isn't a favorite by any means but I never hated it or anything.
...
I just want to be able to play as Knuckles. Specially after they got the concept right the last time they tried (the Black Knight Wii game).
Seriously, even if Classic Sonic was an improvement over the Werehog, I dunno, I feel like the gameplay as of late doesn't allow you to go slow. And I kinda miss the floaty jumps and the aerial maneuverability.
The Advance trilogy (well, mostly 1 and 3) and the Rush games were quite good at that, and so were the Adventures, but... the latest games are generally good, but I feel like something is missing.
I don't want to play as any other character tbh. SA1 and 2 had like, 5 sonic missions which is a main reason why I hated them. Colors/Generations did it right by giving you sonic and only sonic to play as.
Well hate to burst your bubble but I actually like playing as other characters than Sonic. Variety done well is fantastic.

Generations is on my wishlist at the moment. Also: genuinely like the Werehog even though the gameplay style doesn't fit that well.
The only problems I have thus far are the quicktime events (nitpicky I know) and noticeable frame drops (PS3 version, that might be why).

Oh and the lack of options besides volume, brightness, and language, but I can live.
Main reason I don't like the Adventure games is because they've aged like milk and weren't the best in the first place.
Like man those games are rough to go back to.
Yeah the adventure games aren't the best example of variety in sonic games
I got emotionally attached to one of my Chao when I was super young. When it died I must have cried for like half an hour. I couldn't stand having the game in my sight and traded it to Gamestop only to regret it later.
So yeah. Great memories of Sonic Adventure 2

I missed this guy a lot.

Man, what is it with this universe's thing with sending kids to do grocery shopping? (First Amy in Adventure 1, now Ippolita here i.e that little girl in Spagonia)

I'm fine with it as long as they feel like sonic.
The genesis games got it right, and tails in Sonic Adventure seemed like a cool idea.
The problem was they branched too far away from going fast.
Why does everyone think that Sonic JUST about going fast? That's only one small part of what makes a good Sonic game. Good physics is another part, and story is icing on the cake rather than the focus.
I love how tired and ditzy Franco looks 24/7.

Becase going fast is fun
Good physics is another part
You use good physics to go fast.
Best part of genesis games is rolling into a ball to go so stupid fast the camera can't keep up.
and story is icing on the cake
Sonic has never really had a good story.
The only character who ever had development was Shadow, and that pretty much died immediately after Heroes and beyond.
Probably because all of Sonic's marketing is:
WOAH HE'S FAST
EAT SHIT MARIO YOU WISH YOU WERE THIS FAST
THE LINES... THEY'RE BLURRING...! SPEEEED UP!!

Simplicity aside (and even then the JP manuals say otherwise with their sense of continuity) the Classic Quintet would like to talk to you.
Also, compare how some of the main cast act in their debut appearances to their portrayals in the Adventure titles.
Yeah and that may be part of the problem with marketing Sonic games and spin-offs of.

Best part of the Genesis games is that they were just really well made, well-rounded platformers.
Also: genuinely like the Werehog
if you played God of War (which the Werehog is ripping off almost exactly) or any sophisticated, competently made beat em up/hack n slash you will not be saying that, guaranteed.

It's a real shame. I think Sonic Adventure 1 holds up for the most part really nicely aside from the glitches. Sonic Adventure 2 on the other hand is uh....well the only thing I can say I liked about that is is that they made speed stages alot more skilled based, with spindashing being more punishing to use and all. god damn SA2 is bad lol

Haven't played a great deal beat em' ups or hack and slashes anyways so I really have no room to talk. :pudge:

Adventure 1 is the one of the duo that really hasn't aged well imo: characters spaz out on the more fugly level geometry, near lack of sound design, etc. While 2 hasn't escaped from the contention either, you can tell that the developers of that game, once they got their footing from 1, tried to improved the glaring flaws in terms of how characters moved in their environment (strong exception being the Mech stages especially when you compare them to how smooth Gamma felt), the engine, and overall presentation.
I still really love Adventure 1 for what it was and still is but man you really can't ignore the problems it has. Easily the first game they should remake if Sonic Team ever get the chance and have gotten 3D Sonic's gameplay completely down pat.
the ps3/xbox360 versions of Unleashed are much more difficult than their Wii/PS2 variants

Pretty sure they were a lot more fun as well.

if you consider quicktime events fun then yes.
If you have terrible reflexes then you're fucked.

I like this, a lot.
And it seems like they are doing a comic for all the main recurring characters (I'd assume all of Generation's cast, Rouge is next)
I do hope they shed some light on underdeveloped characters, like our favorite Pothead the Porcupine.
