Single digits? Nah, that's when they were still a bizarre mix of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Satam. That's probably a late 50s or later issue.

Honestly, I kinda like the S3&K sprite more, but the Mania sprite is still great though!
S3 was my game growing up, so I do prefer that style. Kinda feels like nostalgia pandering to be using touched up 1/2 sprites, but oh well, beggars can't be choosers.
Yeah, the S3&K sprite is like an evolution of the art style, while Sonic 2 and Mania look like recolors.
Not that it's a bad thing to re-vamp the classic Sonic 1 sprites with new colors and shading, certainly they could've gone for something slightly different, but maybe they just wanted to stay as close to the original as possible.
Speaking of the art style of classic sonic titles, the Sonic YouTube page posted a [i]wonderful[/i] tutorial on how to draw Classic Sonic in collaboration with a guy named GabePaintedWhat!

This is actually really cool... if it wasn't just wish fulfillment for someone's edgy OC and took the same direction as StHH.
I find the Biolizard to be one of the more interesting Sonic Monsters of the Week; it wasn't a worshiped and highly feared deity, an edgy and really generic as fuck alien overlord and invasion force to go along with, an actual full fledged eldritch abomination, a space-time anomaly with a sick as hell clockwork getup with nothing else going for it, or some really goofy traditional monsters that wouldn't look out of place in either Mario or Where The Wilds Things Are, but instead a genetically and technologically modified animal purposefully designed in order to further research on the topic of immortality.
The theme of nature and technology and their interactions with one another was a huge cornerstone of the series since day one further exemplified by future titles, especially in CD wherein the Good Futures proved how well the two could coexist; the Biolizard, however, is surprisingly a [I]negative[/I] example of the two coexisting even though there was some good intent to be originally had: it looks absolutely incomplete, apparently having no functional eyes and (in the main continuity) vestigial hind legs, also looking somewhat visceral with the pus like sores across its body, it wails as if its in total agony. It's an utter [I]mess[/I] of a living being, and it's all thanks to the life support machine grafted onto its back was it able to survive five decades on the ARK.
Oh and it's a giant cyborg salamander mixed with a sauropod, what isn't there more to love?

I started playing through the 8-bit Sonic 2 again after so many years. I have so much nostalgia for it, I had this way before I ever played the Genesis game. Granted I'm playing the Master System version (because of it's bigger FOV) on my GCW-Zero instead of my Game Gear, but it's still as good as I remember.
