I feel that Sonic OC's and some of the artists themselves get too much shit; there's nothing wrong at all with wanting to partake in the fandom on that level, it's just the execution that really matters and on top of that it can become a learning experience for some.
The (sadly numerous) recolors and extremely obvious self-inserts are really the only ones that are any awful. In contrast though, there have been a few who've actually nailed the official look.
"Suck the Cock"
Best OC right there.
Obviously there are some good OCs out there? Sonic characters have a strict style guideline it is not really that difficult to imitate (and with that information floating around the web), it is just bunch of youngins with no artistic skills mapping out their uninteresting fantasy profile en masse (and we like to make fun of them).
I mean, look at this Bubsy shit posted on the previous page, honestly it's pretty good!

I-i-its not like having a sonic-based oc makes you a furry right guys?
I-i-its not like having a sonic-based oc makes you a furry right guys?
Jokes aside that's an interesting question. Similar question was asked on zootopia subreddit: does being a fan of zootopia or making any zootopia fan content make you a furry? Most of the people agreed that you only a furry if you identify as one. You are a fan of one specific universe, not of a furry concept as a whole.
you're only a furry if you fap to furry porn
If your a fan of anthropomorphic art, you are one.
Huge generalization there: just because someone has an interest in anthropomorphic characters doesn't make them instantly part of the furry fandom, unless they self-identify that is.
jennifer hernandez still does sonic ocs to this day (shes been doing it since i was 13 at the very least) while also being one of the archie artists. i dont really consider her a furry, i just see her as a big sonic fan who never grew out of it and made it a big part of her career.

i dont find anything she does cringey (with the exception of a few of her commissions but thats more the commissioners fault) its all so well-drawn and they look like they could be real canon characters because of how established they've become over the years
Reminds me of what happened exactly to Tyson Hesse; if anything, fan support like that and the situation right now with Mania are just incredible turn of events that need to be appreciated more often.
The character creation thing, if true, might be the best thing ever.
They can finally pass the guilt of adding shit tier new friends to the players.

I feel that Pontac & Graff are really guilty in this regard of detracting from most of the character's portrayals or the worldbuilding that both Adventure titles and Unleashed tried attempting and instead focusing on making the series' humor revolve around purposefully cheesy writing that falls flat on its face, which is something similar that's been going on with the Ratchet & Clank series as of late (only to a somewhat lesser degree here).
Which is why I'm really hoping people like Aaron Webber will never become stand-ins for writers at some point.

Webber is just doing what people expect him to do. He's been sonic community manager long before he started posting memes in official social media. Basically before he left SEGA for a year after Boom fiasco he was as serious (mostly) as any other community manager.

Does liking Looney Tunes' or Darkwing Duck's artstyle make someone a furry then by your definition?
Even if you mean someone that likes seeing things arbitrarily anthropormorphized, that still seems like an overgeneralization for people that, say, like werewolves or talking dinosaurs.

The requirements to be considered a furry have always been extremely loose. There are furries out there that are only fans of looney tunes, or Disney afternoon shows.
However, there are many who also reject the title due to negative misconceptions and/or how the internet treats them.
Changing the subject, do you guys think Sonic Mania will be an early summer or late summer release?
Maybe an early summer release though that isn't really certain; maybe they'll put it closer to Forces with a late summer release?

Was giving Shadow guns stupid? Would it have been better if he just used melee weapons?
Was giving Shadow guns stupid? Would it have been better if he just used melee weapons?
The thing about Shadow's guns is that the human weapons are meant to be realistic shit based off of the MP5, M16 and so forth. They're still fake, but entirely construed to be played for realistic factors. The idea of making Shadow use guns is kinda dumb, but they actually worked in the game pretty well besides the auto-lockon being finicky. It's moreso the broad context of Shadow hopping on motorcycles with an MP5 that he cocks like a shotgon for some reason, blasting aliens and soldiers alike while cursing lightly at them.
After all, Sonic Adventure 2 had guns, but they were cartoony cannons and a strange-looking pistol that Eggman put to Amy's head. Hell, Tails gets to even shoot robots with his own cannon, and Gerald Robotnik's last recording explicitly has firing squad call-outs before it ends. But it worked within that context, while in Shadow's game it was a blatant and unrestrained attempt to appeal to the western market in the most left field manner possible - one that the following game, '06, doesn't really acknowledge besides the occasional vehicle for Shadow, showing even the developers cared little for that game's attempts.
Please excuse me. I mean more like, the general concept of giving a Sonic character a projectile firing weapon. Just the concept of a Sonic character using a melee weapon and capitalizing on their momentum makes so much more sense to me than using a weapon that has to be aimed and who's projectiles might not have any affect on the enemy's armor or shield.
Well the game has melee weapons too. And they're kinda poop most of the time since most enemies have guns to shoot you with.
I get what you mean, but gameplay-wise I don't find it that bothersome. It's more the aesthetic and circumstancial values that are bothersome than logical ones.
Was giving Shadow guns stupid? Would it have been better if he just used melee weapons?
I don't think it was how Shadow was given firearms (in StHH) that was the problem but again, the execution.
Shadow using ranged weapons makes sense as it does fit the pragmatic part of his character and combining something like the R&C series' style of action platformer gameplay with Sonic's own does sound like an interesting combo if done right, but the reasons they did it just to give him and the rest of the game that forced hardcore vibe was already a "bleugh" decision to begin with considering the franchise's contrasting tones and the way they implemented it in-game more likely stunted the game's development and overall quality as a result.
Another gripe would have to be design of the weapons themselves: as Rikoh already added, it's really bizarre seeing iconic, photorealistically detailed weapons be wielded in a world of cartoony and colorful anthros (as demonstrated by this official piece). On the other hand though, some weapons in the actual game are either too generic (i.e: Heavy Machine Gun, Bazooka, Laser Rifle, Grenade Launcher, RPG) or exaggerated in some way (i.e: any of the Eggman weapons, 8-Shot RPG, Egg Vacuum, and the Omochao Gun) to really conflict with the artstyle of the series or in some cases, mesh pretty well with it.
For the record, I can perfectly see firearms existing in the Sonic universe and it's already been bit of an element common in other titles besides Shadow's own game (i.e: the intro of Sonic's story in Adventure where the squad of police officers fire at Chaos 0 with pistols, Gamma's cannon which clearly has a receiver for rounds, Battle with Gerald Robotnik's Journal mentioning that he had an affinity for model firearms, etc). It's not really something immediately alien to see in a cartoon setting either, both in the east or western worlds.

That and the fact that Sonic and Shadow, and maybe some other characters, can most likely outrun a bullet, so logically, as far as cartoony video game logic goes, it would be pointless for them to use a gun if they must use any weapon.
Honestly, when it comes to gameplay-implementation, it kinda sucks that Shadow the Hedgehog as a game didn't implement an aiming mode ala Ratchet & Clank. Granted, that concept wasn't really there yet at that point in its franchise and Sonic Team are really bad about innovation even over a decade ago, but a generic auto-aim with a basic cursor combined with a more condensed aiming mode for precision could've allowed for some neat bosses or complex encounters while still making the gunplay interesting.
Instead they just sorta strapped on weapons like a band-aid to the combat so that the health bar enemies aren't so obnoxious to deal with compared to spamming Homing Attacks.
I feel like instead of having to kill a bunch of enemies and destroy stuff to find alternate paths in Shadow the Hedgheog, they should have gave your partners abilities that could help you traverse through the levels, and design paths in the levels based around that.
Like obviously Tails can fly you up high places or over gaps you couldn't normally get over, Knuckles can destroy boulders and dig holes that lead to underground paths, Eggman could hack open security gates, the Chaotix could disable laser grids or spot lights that would usually alert a bunch of enemies your way [del]as long as you help them find the computer room first[/del]. That would be much better than them just giving you hints and maybe attacking an enemy now and then, it would make them feel like they're actually being useful.
Well the objectives in general may have been less grating if the game didn't lack any sort of continuation routing or level select so you don't have to start it 10 times over for 10 non-canon endings. But yeah, enemy and item hunts are so fucking obnoxious with levels that seem fairly linear until suddenly they're not, not to mention the larger ones that just so happen to give you the middle finger when it turns out the last enemy you need to kill is somewhere in the stage and it's time to checkpoint warp around flailing blindly until something finally dies.
Shadow the Hedgehog could've at least been a fun game, but a lot of its issues come down to core, fundamental problems and ideas that they just didn't do well at all.
