interesting that cream seemed to be a raccoon before they settled on rabbit
I guess they weren't entirely done with a raccoon concept given Marine's existence in Rush Adventure, too; she's even a younger kid altogether than Sonic and Blaze in that game that has more of a story role than anything else.
interesting that cream seemed to be a raccoon before they settled on rabbit
I would have liked that Kangaroo mouse look they had going for her xD
Oh jesus and to think Shadow could have looked really bad.
Thankfully, they seemed to realize later on.
People talk about how "edgy" Shadow looks now but damn those early versions are straight up edge.
Why did the first two designs needed to also look super buff anyways? Those are some really noticeable pectorals and biceps, looks like he could win at an arm wrestling match any day against the other anthros.

Can't help but Cream's early designs look really good.
...and are those... toes?
...and are those... toes?
Really odd design choice as anthros are normally depicted with feet that vaguely resemble socks (see: Big, Tikal, Darkspine Sonic).
Likely a placeholder or maybe even a goof on Uekawa's part.

No kidding, that's straight up Coldsteel the "Hedgeheg" levels of edge.

All the Sonic Twitter Takeover videos presumably in order for those who like this social media self awareness thing or just want to hear Mike and Roger talk and screw around with eachother as their notable roles.

I didn't see any link to it in the thread, but Sonic Game confirmed for 2017, will be shown off on July livestream.
As always, I'm temptively excited about a new sonic- it's made by Sonic Team this time, and they've been hyping it up quite a bit, but there's always room for problems. Still, I'm more hopeful than ever!
Borders on Mario / Nintendo but

Surprising amount of visual detail and charm for just a series of sports games. To think this all got started because of the cooperation in F-Zero GX's development and a previously acquired sports game license.
To be honest, i'd hope they take whatever the hell Lost World was trying to be, and severely refine it. It has the potential to work with level design that actually accentuates the positives, so long as the wonky shit gets removed or fixed. Because just abandoning that for yet another new gameplay style would probably send the fanbase into (yet another) tissy.
You haven't seen the best of it yet

Never really played a lot of Sonic games. I've only ever played 1, 2, and 3, and I just picked up CD since I've wanted to play it for a while now, and it's like, 2 bucks on Steam right now. God damn this game is amazing.
The art is great, and the JP soundtrack is probably one of the best OSTs I've heard in a while.
I just really dig the overall vibe and style.
I think this game also really cemented what I find so off-putting about almost any Sonic game post-Adventure, sans maybe Generations.
I'm up to the Metal Sonic race right now and I'm taking a break because I keep getting my ass kicked. It'd be much easier if Robotnik wasn't always 2 feet behind me to zap my ass if I get stuck on a slope for even a second.

Agreed on that front: CD's environments are overall absolutely stunning and the spritework shows it.
It's a style that only a select few games besides the original quadrilogy have tried to achieve yet I only want to see more of it.
It also exemplified how otherworldly Little Planet was, even when compared to this universes' version of Earth. That is, before Adventure 1, 2, Shadow, and 06' came into play with their more grounded set pieces. Unleashed, Colors, and Generations brought back some of the cartoon fantasy / sci-fi tone while still keeping the "realistic" elements into play, but it was still all together some really top notch stuff.
Lost World was just too safe with its Mario-esque art style, and its something I loathe in its entirety; it was just a huge step backwards.
Glad to see that this thread is alive again.
I really, really wish they at least consider reusing a character from the cast again.
They don't have to force it fanservice-y (like how Knuckles was in Lost World). If the narrative requires it and someone just so happen to fit the bill, than have them make an appearance, please.
I think that '06 left a bad impression on people saying that Sonic need to get back to his roots and ditch his friends, but com'on, it was 10 years ago...
Sonic Generations doesn't count because their presence had little to no significance other than memory lane.
I'd like to see a new Sonic game that isn't Boom or doesn't attempt to reinvent the formula while failing miserably at it, please.
also I wouldn't mind seeing Blaze make a return.
Honestly, the whole just Sonic being playable thing feels like SEGA having a 4-year-old's tantrum.
'Oh, you JUST want Sonic? Now he's a werewolf!', etc, etc.
Really, the problem wasn't so much too many characters- it was more too many characters who don't play like they belong in a Sonic game.
I mean, surely even just Tails or Knuckles could get promoted back to playable by now?

I feel it was less a tantrum and more the fact that SEGA and Sonic Team felt they couldn't just make an entire game based around only Sonic again. Back when Unleashed came out someone on the dev team had said that making an entire game based around the daytime Sonic stages with the graphical fidelity they put into Unleashed was basically a giant, implausible money sink. Didn't stop them on Colors, but that game was lower fidelity with lots of clever asset reusage, and Generations' stages were much shorter than what Unleashed threw at you (although I feel it's better that way) combined with an anniversary title's budget. Thus the Werehog, which often enough was just a gigantic filler to extend playtime, and the Wisps who were meant to extend playtime via exploration and got added into Lost World.. for the fuck of it because the current series director really wants to make them a recurring thing for no good reason.
It's like when they hit Lost World, all those floating planetoids and such were essentially their way of bypassing the entire issue of miles of coherent map and stage design, cutting the problem out altogether besides in certain places like the underwater rail grinding acts. Cool way to bypass that problem in theory, but the execution led to some severely bland level design.

Lost World felt like they took away all the strengths of main Sonic games and tried to make it "compatible" with Nintendo audience.
And like you said, tighter budget, probably.

What do you mean by ''compatible with Nintendo audience''?
It's not like Nintendo consoles/handhelds never had their fair share of Sonic games. The Advance triology, Rush series, Colors and daytime Unleashed were Sonic at it's finest. I don't think they wanted to make the game more 'compatible' with the Ninty audience. It's more likely that they just had a low budget and not a lot of creative ideas.
What do you mean by ''compatible with Nintendo audience''?
Lost World being Wii U exclusive, made the game slower paced, and wished that "Mario Players" would try the game. Doesn't help that it also has 2 DLCs based on Nintendo IP.
They perfected the modern sonic formula in generations and never touched it again. Hopefully they go back to it
I would like to see a remake of Sonic R. Or at least make a sequel.
I would like to see a remake of Sonic R. Or at least make a sequel.
As much as I like to see R get reworked, I feel SEGA and perhaps Sonic Team have already settled in with All-Stars Racing as their main racing game series and the polish shows.
Sad though that Riders was put into limbo after Free Riders, it was easily the most unique of the bunch and I had a lot of fun with Zero Gravity in particular.
Sonic R and Sonic Heroes are two games I'd love to see remade from the ground up. Both had some great ideas and Heroes has some of my favorite level concepts in the series but both were ruined by shitty controls.
I dunno about a Sonic Heroes remake, but I think a modern game inspired by Sonic R would be cool. I think Sonic and SEGA All Stars originally toyed around with fast characters like Sonic running around on feet, but they decided against it for some reason that I forget.
In an early prototype of the game, Sonic raced on foot, Dr. Eggman rode an Eggpod with legs, Tails flew in a biplane, Amy Rose drove a car, and Gilius Thunderhead from Golden Axe rode one of the Chickenleg creatures from the game. This version, however, was reportedly not fun to play, largely due to the varying sizes between the different characters, but also because the drift mechanic wouldn't work with racers who were on foot. It was later revised so that everyone would be in cars, bikes, or modified flyers.
Wonder what was with the drift mechanic trouble; obviously didn't seem to be a visuals problem from what I can gather.
Also that Egg Mobile variant would've been pretty funny if it had legs like this or it was just Eggman's legs stapled onto it.
I'm pretty sure Sonic has drifted when running before.
