I guess it was pretty shitty for BRB when full control on character personalities was given to show creators just a year before the game was released. Sonic Team and Sega fucked up everything that was possible to fuck up in this game just because they had complete control over everything what BRB was doing.

Sonic Team had no input on Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric i'm pretty sure. Sonic Boom was entirely a Sega of America undertaking, though Rise of Lyric seemed to originally be a concept called "Sonic Origins" that was meant to do its own thing. Then it got turned into a spinoff video game adaptation of Sonic Boom when that whole thing got consolidated, but Big Red Button clearly had no communication with neither the show runners nor Sanzaru and their Shattered Crystal title. They still tried to do the origin story stuff but bad writing makes it come off as both forced an incomplete.
Big Red Button also got screwed over pretty hard too, since Rise of Lyric wasn't even meant to be Wii U exclusive but suddenly their game got shoehorned into the Wii U Sonic exclusives deal. It would've still probably been mediocre no matter how you put it, but having to rework Cryengine on their own accord to Wii U from what would've been a multi-plat game undermined the whole project too.

Christ imagine if they actually went with that title.
Why is Sonic Forces still not available to preorder?
Christ imagine if they actually went with that title.
You think that's bad, you should see some of the old designs. Like Eggman being a lean and big-glasses nerd stereotype, and Sonic being a literal hedgehog with shirt and shorts and a carrying bag. They were willing to try to go all Crash Bandicoot with Sonic, and allegedly SEGA execs reeled at the sight of the concepts before reigning them in.
Why is Sonic Forces still not available to preorder?
It may be coming soon, since there was recently a leak detailing a "Day 1" dlc featuring some cosmetics for your Avatar character.
No matter how you cut it, I feel sorry for Sonic Forces since it's probably going on sale in the winter, at a point of several major blockbuster releases and Super Mario Odyssey trying to stake their claim simultaneously.

Sonic Team and Sega was controlling everything. This was confirmed in official interviews, by many former BRB workers and by official SB design document which was leaked a while ago.

Due to a series of requirement from Sega Japan, they worked for 2 years on the “Vertical Slice” build, a tech demo of sorts that demoed all the gameplay gimmicks, in order to work on them and show their ideas to SEGA.
Game was planned as a 4 players Co-op adventure, set to release as a digital title at Steam with a PS Store/Xbox Live port planned if sales went as expected. That Vertical slice demo is what we know as Synergy.
Around late 2012, Sega shows this Vertical slice demo to Nintendo and include Synergy as part of their exclusivity deal. Sega asks Big Red Button for a Nintendo 3DS port, until Sanzaru games came to save the day.
Wii U porting came around mid 2013. This makes a full change on the product focus. 4 players co-op was impossible, so game was turned into a 2 players adventure. Many mechanics were changed due to Wii U hardware, making them reworks the levels into more lineal ones, with lots of interactive prompt buttons for almost everything.
TV show also helped destroy their original idea. A designer pitched Sega the idea of a Sonic Tv Show. It was unrelated to the game, but 8 months before the game launch SEGA gave total control to the show team to change the game, making big changes to the storyline and making Knuckles dumb. They also asked for a richer universe with lots of characters that were totally absent in the series, along with filler cutscenes and levels due to the storyline change. No info on the previous storyline was revealed, except that ancients had a huge importance there.
Sega and Sonic Tems asked for several changes during all the developing process:
Gameplay wise, asides for asking for more speed and less exploration, they also eliminated water moves. Initially, Sonic and friends were able to swim, but due to Sonic Team exigencies they made them die on contact with water in the final game.
Design wise, many changes were made on the characters to make them more similar to “legacy Sonic” look. Several NPC characters had to be radically changed due to them violating Sonic Team design guidelines. One of them was Cliff, originally an inventor. Only Tails and Eggman can be inventors.
Storyline wise, they made them discard the Sonic origins storyline as SEGA denied it, due to them planning to tell Sonic origins in the future ( or at least, that is what they told Big Red Button.
Another huge issue with Sonic Boom was the fact that they had developed it with no knowledge of it ever coming to Wii U. It was developed mainly on CryEngine and looked really good, but they were forced to downgrade everything in order for it to meet the WiiU's specs.

And yet the only Sonic game (as in him being the protagonist) I can think of that was slower than Rise of Lyric was Labyrinth, and even that let you use the Spin Dash to shoot all over the place.

This is actually something i've thought about for the longest time. Sure, Eggman caused trouble on South Island and Sonic went out of his way to stop him, but since the story was so minimalist and there were one-off things here and there that depicted the early Chaotix designs and Sonic being in a band and so forth, it's always made me wonder if SEGA would ever tackle a sort of origin story for the blue blur since they're perfectly fine with poorly-written stories now being expounded upon in every other game.
Then again, i'd rather have Pontac away from the series at this rate before that ever happens.

This sounds more like SEGA + Sonic Team were closely monitoring the project after it was pitched than fully 100% getting involved; what RoL turned out to be is still squarely the fault of BRB and (marketing wise) SEGA.

The only fault of BRB is not switching to other engine after SEGA decided it will be a good idea to make it Wii U exclusive. So it's at least 50/50 between SEGA and BRB. I'd say it's more like 70/30 because I'm quite sure that the engine was not changed because SEGA was stupid enough to not give devs more time to work something out.

As far as I'm aware I'm amazed they even got Cryengine working on the Wii U at all.

They don't stop surprising me. It's even funny since this is probably after an episode which had Amy talking about stereotypes as she was the only person in the group that can cook :v:
It's still a shame how the game turned out.

The Boom sub-series really didn't need to be created in the first place; while it has shown the franchise to a wider audience, an animated series in the vein of Sonic X that further tied to the main continuity would've really done better in that regard.
Still it's good to see what the current producers are able to scrounge from the mess that Boom initially turned out to be and make something that's actually pretty unique.
After listening to the new mania track, I had the awful idea to combine the Generations Remix with the original Stardust Speedway Bad Future, worse I did it by separating the versions by left/right audio.

The start is a bit rough but it picks up quickly.
Sweet! Got confirmation of my Sonic Mania Collector Edition pre-order that I should be getting it on the 17th. 2-Days late but still good. This is from Amazon for the Switch version.

This game just keeps getting better.
Oh shit, S3&K's Special Stages are also back! So. I get the idea of the UFO stages: Collect Blue Spheres to gain speed, while you also need to collect rings so you don't time out. Once you run out or rings you'll fail the Special Stage)
So now I'm curious, since there's 2 Special Stages (Chase the UFO and Get the Blue Spheres), I wonder if you get the 7 Chaos Emeralds and a new set of gems...
That snippet of Studiopolis Act 2.

Oh man, that time attack thing is such a great idea. The most annoying thing about time attack in CD was having to pause the game, cycle down to the "Return to Menu" option, go back into time attack mode, and reselect the stage again every time I wanted to retry. It's a little thing, but it makes a big difference in the end.
They also better have the soundtrack also available to purchase on Day 1.
So here's the rundown of the Special Stage, Bonus Stage and Time Attack from the SONIC PR:
In “Blue Spheres”, players navigate Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles through a series of blue spheres to clear the stage. But be careful! Once touched, the blue spheres will turn red. Touching a red sphere instantly ends the Bonus Stage. Silver Medallions are awarded to players who complete the Bonus Stage, while collecting all the blue spheres and rings awards players with a perfect score and a Gold Medallion.
Time Attack was also revealed to be a new mode in Sonic Mania. Prove you’re the best of the best in Time Attack, which lets players compete for fastest speed in the world by recording their time in the game’s online leaderboard.
In Special Stages, players chase down enemy UFOs to secure various Chaos Emeralds. Collecting blue spheres along the way will give their character an added boost of speed to their meter. Once the meter fills up, the Mach level increases. Just watch out and don’t speed off the stage!
Ken Sugimori renders of Sonic and Tails from SEGA 3D Classics Collection.
Still waiting for Sonic 3 3D Classic... one of these days.
I always wonder if because of the Michael Jackson music contributions that's why they're afraid to rerelease it
I hope that isn't the issue. S3&K got released on Steam years ago, and they also got released on one of the SEGA Genesis Flashback Plug&Play not too long ago. Not the one that just got released, it's the previous one.
I'm still kind of pissed off that those SEGA Genesis plug-n-play are all fucking garbage. It's truly a shame, the Genesis deserves much better. Is it really that hard to just take all of the SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics that is on Steam, put it all on a fucking good quality build, no shitty bluetooth controllers. Here's the list of games:

Just give me all these games on a legit plug-n-play Sega, and this is coming from a Super Nintendo guy. No excuses Sega.
It will only happen if sega stops licensing to ATGames to make their plug n plays. They need to go the Nintendo route and do it themselves properly
I always wonder if because of the Michael Jackson music contributions that's why they're afraid to rerelease it
Micheal Jackson wasn't the only one who contributed music to the game but also Brad Buxer of The Jetzons fame; Ice Cap's track was heavily sampled from Hard Times.
