I think it goes beyond music, seeing as it's perfectly fine to re-release the game over and over digitally in its original state. Methinks Sega figured Sonic 1 and 2 didn't sell very well on phones but wanted to pool Taxman's and Stealth's talents into a whole new game rather than port 3&K; kind of a case where they looked at the praise the ports got in spite of sales numbers.
After all, SEGA is really fucking weird about what series die and what series continue, and make inconsistent and crazy choices for sequels all the time, Sonic and Valkyria Chronicles being two dominant examples.

I mean, arguments could be made that everyone that isn't in Sonic 3 is superfluous, but I think a lot of the characters we have are pretty fun

I think in terms of side characters, people appreciate Tails, Knuckles, Amy (mostly as a holdover seeing as her characterization veers between intolerable and alright), Blaze, and Shadow (people actually seem to really appreciate him appearing nowadays for some reason).
Everyone else is either obscure, marginalized by years of poor side-character roles, controversial (holy bat tits) or so forth.

Watching Knuckles become Sonic's second sidekick always bothered me.
Is really bothering me that they don't bring Sally [the furry with the blue shoes and jacker] somehow in the main series. Is Sally an American thing only?

Sally was an Archie comics character, which SatAM loosely based itself from but with its own direction. Although she does cameo in Spinball alongside other comics characters, the Archie continuity was always heavily independent of the actual games besides very loose adaptations of the games.
The keyword is 'was', however, since now with the Archie comics dead, unless IDW go out of their way to ascertain such character rights, the Freedom Fighters are probably gone for good so characters like Sally are basically going to be nothing but a memory.

As far as I am aware Sally and the rest of the freedom fighters are currently owned by Sega directly, seeing as they acquired the rights to SatAM from DiC not long ago, as for Archie? They lost their rights to the use of any Sonic based character when they didn't renew their license and got themselves in hot water.

So i've been watching a [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TygxOXnU5DU]subtitled version of the japanese Lost World story[/url] and i've gotta say, it lends the story a wholly different tone when Sonic isn't a snarking dick to everybody while Eggman comes off as more serious about the things going on.
As much as the japanese writers gave us shit just over a decade ago, I wouldn't mind them back in charge now.

I always thought Silver was an incredibly cool new character had 06 not ruined all his potential.

While i'll always be a Sonic guy, E-102 Gamma's one game roundabout will always stay close to my heart. And honesty despite the archaic animation and camerawork of it's era, Gamma's story shines as it's best. A vote for you Gamma.

it doesn't help that they took eggman nega from being a cool alternate universe version of eggman and instead made him eggman's descendant just so he could be silver's bad guy instead of blaze's

personally silver is my least favorite character, but that's not entirely his fault. I don't think silver is really compatible as a regular sonic cast member. he really should've been in a spinoff, with a leading role and cast members designed to compliment him specifically, so he can get good character development, and hopefully good writing. just taking characters from rush and trying to twist them to work with silver just hurts everyone in the long run
fortunately for silver fans, there was one arc in sonic universe that had exactly what I wanted, with characters that actually made sense in their relation to silver and made him not look like the clueless idiot he was in 06. if you like silver and wish he did better, or even if you don't like silver, you should check it out to see exactly how a good silver story works (far away from everyone else)
Well, I cleared Sonic 3 Complete to prep myself for Mania, and i've got to say that I forgot how fucking obnoxious S&K's level design was past Flying Battery. Cheap shots/enemies that are just about guaranteed to hit you the moment you come up on them, numerous ways to get crushed, and bottomless pits awaiting a cocky Super/Hyper mode. Like jesus, I get that it's supposed to be end-game stuff, but the difficulty just spikes into obscenity and developer dickery.

Good to know E-102 Gamma is receiving some love. I always loved he's story in Sonic Adventure. Also the E-series robot themes for the boss fights are great.
