I've already met one significant bugbear that bothers me, albeit it's not a glitch or anything but instead a game design decision related to unlockables: [sp]you can unlock the Super Peel-Out and Insta-Shield via the Bonus Stage medallions, but they're only usable on a no-save run via an exclusive secrets menu for it, and even worse, you have to choose between the Peel-Out, Insta-Shield or Drop Dash by principle of CD, 3&K and Mania movesets being considered separate. We have more than enough buttons and functionality for this shit, this is an extremely arbitrary oversight and decision.[/sp]
Also you cannot skip mid-game cutscenes in any way whatsoever, so if you make more than one save or play no-save runs a lot, the beginning's gonna get obnoxious.
I just picked up Sonic Mania, and as someone who has never really played through a 2D sonic game before, I'm totally confused, and it's disorienting as fuck. How do people play this without having a brain aneurysm? I appreciate the sprite work and pretty colors, but I can't play for shit. Any tips?
Friend of mine has been trapped in CPZ's Act 2 boss for a hour, save him.
Like he beat the boss but it's either A: Not letting him leave soft locking him or B: He somehow gets shot through the floor with sonics dying sprite, wraps the level around then dies.
Zone 2 spoilers:[sp]I did not expect to end up playing Mean Bean Machine.[/sp]

My tip for a 1st time run is "don't worry about it".
Just like, let the game carry you on paths and have fun with it. Tell yourself now that you won't get the chaos emeralds first run, probably won't clear all the blue sphere levels, just... kinda go.
The games designed to give you branching paths so just take whichever seems the most fun.
That [sp]Mean Bean Machine[/sp] reference was fucking glorious. I'm loving this game.

I'm watching a video on it and [sp]I'm kinda disappointed in the SFX used, since the original had vocal...like noises that a cleaner version of would work nicely here. They used the best track though, and it's a decent remix.[/sp]

Play Sonic 1, 2, or 3&K first, preferably the latter two since they're more similar mechanically. Mania is, as far as I've played, like those games on steroids level design-wise. The level layout in the older games is much less elaborate so it'll be far less disorienting with fewer paths and less massive stages.
Alternatively, just gun it. Any progress is good progress even if you have no idea where the hell you're going besides forward.
[sp]My head feels like a mess after what i've just witnessed in the stardust speedway boss. It felt like a drug trip but i never had drugs it's really weird. like it was so awesome my brain couldn't even wrap around it, also fucking peel out and insta-shield oh my god[/sp]
Mania is so gooood, what the fuck.
I have genuinely not enjoyed a single good Sonic game since Sonic 3 on my aunt's old Genesis when I was 10. It's like a huge blast to the past for me, it's unbelievable.
I decided to listen to some of the remixed music released from Sonic Mania and oh my god it's AMAZING. I love Tee Lopes.
I gotta go to work, and then after work I have a dentist appointment, so I won't be playing anymore Sonic Mania until around 7 o'clock tonight. What little I played right now is :incredible: though
This game was incredible. Easily my favorite boss battles in the classic series.
Only gripe is [sp]Why limit the insta-shield and peel out? I gasped when I saw I could use the insta-shield but I was hoping it was a customizable option for my save game not just a no save feature.[/sp]
Oh fuck off... :speechless:
who could've guessed that sonic mania would become an excuse to dump shit all over the characters who are absent?
Finished the game and it was outstanding minus a few sore spots. While it hits a lot of highs the lows are miserable.
Stardust Speedway 2 hurts the shit out of my eyes and the level layout is just a mess. I couldn't find my way for a good couple minutes and that was annoying. The boss is also genuinely awesome, but goes on so long and if you die to the final phase of it having to do everything all over again suuuuucks butt.
Oil Ocean's Act 2 Boss is dogshit. I hated it. Awful.
The final zone is hot fucking trash. They obviously used all their creativity on the other stages because this was just a unfun slog. I'm so upset that the game ends on such a godawful stage because it deserves better. So so much better.

So, uh... how are there people already playing the PC Sonic Mania release? Is it available for developers or something?

It is probably tested on steam, making sure achievements or whatever implementations it has are working fine.
Holy shit, I can't play for shit in the Switch Version. Not only is the Home Button laggy, but the controllers keeps disconnecting, and I've tested it with other games and it's just Sonic Mania.
Just as it was when I was younger, [sp]Hydrocity Zone continues to be the bane of my existence[/sp]
Ok, for some reason the controls decided to work now. Got to Studiopolis and man, that Zone 2 boss was really clever.
I'm getting like a half a second control delay in the blue sphere stages in the XB1 version. Controls are fine outside of it. I've failed ever blue sphere stage I've done so far

I've game over twice already both on chemical plant zone
Wow flying battery zone 2 is pure horseshit
Lost 13 lives and the boss battle is broke
[editline]15th August 2017[/editline]
WOW HAHA LOST ALL MY LIVES TIME TO REDO THE WHOLE FUCKING LEVEL AGAIN HAHA
lives can kiss my ass. No reason they need to exist
[editline]15th August 2017[/editline]
HAHAHA NOT ONLY THAT BUT I HAVE TO DO IT FROM ACT 1 HAHA
I'm literally 10 seconds away from tossing my switch out my damn window. Flying Battery 2 boss is broken.
Chemical plant zone 2 is a cake walk compared to 1
Is it me or chemical plant zone 1 is butt fuck hard?, as soon as i reach the pink water part i just keep dying
I'm only on studiopolis zone 1 and I already want to turf my controller

Flying Battery Zone boss is quite annoying, but manage to find the trick to him: [sp]Just keep attacking the bumper so Eggman doesn't have the chance to do the electric attack, and if you hit him from the turbine, you'll have a better chance swinging him into the spikes[/sp]
I'm on Zone 5: [sp]Press Garden[/sp] and still only have 2 Chaos Emeralds. Haven't seen any other Special Ring stages. Ah well, gonna stop playing for now.
Is it me or chemical plant zone 1 is butt fuck hard?, as soon as i reach the pink water part i just keep dying
Pink Water part has always been like that from Sonic 2, so yes.
Is it me or chemical plant zone 1 is butt fuck hard?, as soon as i reach the pink water part i just keep dying
Drop down a little first instead of immediately trying to jump into it, I found out the hard way that just like Sonic 2, trying to rush the rising water segment is basically going to get you crushed, and I came damn close to drowning.
I had 12-15 lives all throughout the game and thought most of it was really easy outside Oil Ocean's shit ass boss. It feels really weird to see people freaking out at flying batteries.
God save your souls when you get to the cesspit that is oil oceans boss.
Oil Ocean's boss isn't even theoretically that hard by itself, but [sp]taking the machinegun bits from the original Lava Reef miniboss fight of 3&K[/sp] results in almost assured hits. You essentially have no choice but to take them out first and cautiously or else take hits and lose rings liberally. I actually had to backtrack in the stage a bit to get an excess of rings so that I could dive into the fight and not lose all of my rings to the oil the moment I got hit.
That boss, Stardust Speedway's and the normal final boss (haven't seen the true final boss yet) gave me so much shit.
