I'm fine with some levels returning as the premise so far is rather similar to Unleashed with the adventure spanning across the world so it was bound to elicit a continuity nod somewhere. Having almost the entirety of the game be levels that were already remade in Generations or Mania inserted into here would be a really disappointing turn of events though.
I think that, after the success of Sonic Mania, that Sonic Team is going to learn the wrong lessons from the game and just pander to nostalgia so we get Sonic 4 all over again. Sonic Mania was a good game because it had good gameplay, the retro-throwback spritework and design was just icing on the cake. Sonic Mania has tight controls, good platforming, interesting level design, a lot of fast paced movement with good camera angles that give a feeling of speed but also not taking control away from the player. The plot was bare bones which worked in its favor because it didn't carry the baggage that most modern Sonic games have in their poorly written stories. Sonic and the gang in the modern games have their moments, but at the same time they're just, well... (1m44s in particular) The biggest issue with the modern games is the writing and voice direction. The plots are basic, full of overused tropes and the characters frequently hold the idiot ball and end up helping the bad guys where anyone with common sense wouldn't. The voices are stilted, disassociated from the situation and poorly intonated. Sonic should come off as cool and fresh, which means he should speak when it's necessary and not comment on every little minor thing, and he shouldn't be a cheese ball with sayings like "we'll show that creep with the REAL SUPER POWER OF TEAMWORK!" like he's in a Saturday morning cartoon. He doesn't have to be silent but he shouldn't be a one liner spouting dork either. Likewise the plots don't have to be bare bones but they should make the player care and actually get invested in the story. The next Sonic game after Forces inevitably reviews terribly is either gonna be bland with no plot other than "stop Eggman" or is going to continue going full ham with terrible writing in the "so bad it's bad" way.

I don't think it's fair to say modern games on a whole have had bad stories and voice acting, I really enjoyed the plot of games like the Adventures, Rush, and Unleashed, and Mike Pollock is just a wonderful delight to listen to. I do fully agree though that Sonic Team is most likely going to take the wrong lessons from these games varying success and release a bland product very soon after.

Considering that the model is modular I could easily make it female Tails :v:
Decided to go back and try Sonic Adventure 2. Wow this game is awful. Really don't get the appeal of this game. It somehow manages to control worse than Sonic 06 and even has a worse camera. Like first off when I play a Sonic game I want to exclusively play as Sonic. I get that's what the adventure series is about - playing as a different cast of characters but when the game only lets you play sonic 6 times out of the 30 some odd zones they have it's just fucking ridiculous. In the originals you had the OPTION to play as Tails or Knuckles if you wanted to - completely optional. Second, trying to actually use the homing attack on anything is a complete hit or miss. Granted it's an incredibly early iteration of the homing attack but I had much more confidence using it in 06 than I did trying to figure it out here. I will give you this, the physics are only slightly better than in 06. But when I turn my stick more than a dust particles length Sonic makes the sharpest turn in the history of mankind left or right and can send you flying off a ramp you're speeding down. This combined with the camera can make a really interesting and fun, speedy set pieces turn into complete wonky nightmares of sonic flying back and fourth between the ends of the ramps trying not to fly off with a camera that gives you the worst possible angle for every possible place sonic is in. Combined with the clunkiness of Tails and Knuckles makes this one of the worst experiences I've ever played in a game. People always show that clip of Sonic walking upside down on a loop in Sonic 06. That's nothing compared to how poorly Sonic navigates geometry in SA2. I'm not entirely sure why people defend this game or even what they see in it. Maybe it was better played on the Dreamcast but I doubt that it was much better. Yes Sonic 06 was an unfinished game riddled with bugs, loading issues, framerate issues, inconsistencies, and a very out of place artstyle. But at least I can have an enjoyable experience playing through the issues. There was some fun to be had on the Sonic stages in Adventure 2, but otherwise it's a completely overrated game with little fun value whatsoever. I thought Sonic in 06 handled fairly decently and I felt a lot more confident controlling him overall, with a few minor exceptions. I think the bugs and issues you see all over youtube are WAY overblown. The game is pretty playable for the most part. I did not feel this way in Adventure 2 whatsoever. Trying to grind rails was a hit or miss, trying to effectively do a homing attack was a crapshoot. None of Sonics abilities gave me any confidence that they would actually work. I know I am well below in the minority here, but I can't really see myself ever wanting to play this game again. [editline]13th September 2017[/editline] This is also why I find Boost gameplay to be the best iteration of Modern sonic. It reinforces the idea of Sonic being a "speedrunning" platformer. Sure people use the argument that you can just "boost to win" and while this is true to an extent there are a lot of segments in Unleashed and Generations where the boost will kill you unless you're incredibly skilled at the stage. Sky Sanctuary is one of these stages - so is Empire City. Being able to boost for a majority of a stage AND get an incredibly fast time takes a lot of skill and practice to master. There are a good amount of alternate routes to take advantage of and a lot of the time if you try boosting into it you will probably die. The first time you play a Modern stage you probably will go incredibly slow - just like the originals. You won't be able to access those alternate routes by simply holding boost but learning the stage you can incorporate the boost into your runs and keep an incredibly high amount of speed while platforming, which is what I think modern Sonic does really well at - this high speed platforming makes for an really unique experience that takes some practice to get right. This is currently what is worrying me about Sonic Forces - the Park Avenue gameplay we have seen offers very little in terms of "speed platforming". Instead you just boost and get to the end. There seems to be very little alternate paths that benefit from careful use of boosts and stage knowledge. Hopefully when more stages are shown there will be more level design akin to Unleashed and Generations but hopefully expanded upon those games to allow for even more freedom in the level design.
While I wouldn't say it was worse than 06, Adventure 2 always felt like a big step back from the first to me. Especially the shooting and emerald hunt levels.

I still think Adventure 1 + 2, Unleashed and the Storybook series were the best the series has gotten in terms of writing; Shadow and '06 would easily be the worst.
When is Sonic going to be like this again?
ive never had problems with the homing attack in the adventure games. they always worked the way it was intended. dont get me wrong im well aware the adventure games have aged horribly but idk the homing attacks have always been one of the more functional parts of them

I wouldn't really use SEGA's own indelicate attempts at imbuing the series with meaning or maturity as a reason why it shouldn't be done.

The Nintendo Direct briefly showed what looked like brown underground caverns/mines for Forces, so hey, there's that :v: [editline]13th September 2017[/editline] oh wait it's just a lower route in the Avatar's Park Avenue stage well that was pointless
I took another stab at Robotnik's theme.
Everyone has a different opinion of how Sonic should be and honestly that's what makes this series longevity so fruitful, We may want our Sonic to be more Serious while some want it to be a Saturday Morning Cartoon or have a happy middle. On Whatever Spectrum of coat you grew up will shape your views of this series and that's cool Personally i grew up in the Adventure Era but my first games were from the Classic series (Sonic 3 was my first Sonic Game), I don't really mind what Sonic will take place in the future as long as the games play good to be frank.
Seriously, when the fuck is the PC update getting pushed to consoles? I'm really tired of not having a designated Super button and the collision glitches.

There was an update recently but no designated super button.

[sp]So Infinite is Eggman's OC donut steel, probably made from residual energy from the Phantom Ruby. Wasn't expecting that to be honest, though whether he'll actually be the will of the ruby or 100% subservient to Eggman's a different deal.[/sp] Beyond brief snippets/previews of things, it's really just cutscenes for this trailer. It looks.. interesting, but the gameplay still puts me off.
I always took the sonic series to be light as hell and the ever darker tones just SEGA trying to cash in on the maturing audience in literally all the wrong ways. Eggman was pitched as a beaver lookin dude in pajamas and even in the more revered game he's always had a goofy sense of humor. He's built idiot lumberjack robots to huck wood at you, he's driven inside a giant bean and accidentally slammed himself into trees slapstick style and more. He usually had a more sinister device waiting at the end of the games but there was a healthy mix to it. Adventure got rid of the goofy side entirely and went into grimdark idiot territory with Eggman wanting to blow up cities and maim people because EVIL and just... it really didn't need to go that far. It's kinda weird. Unleashed may be a mess thanks to the werehog but it's when I think Eggman as a villain found the happy medium of returning to be a goof with increasingly dangerous weapons and he's been pretty okay for the most part since then (even if lost world skewed to the edgier side of things)
I want Forces to be good so badly, especially now that it's confirmed a tie in to Mania and I don't want it to taint the story of that game and the Phantom Ruby. But man, It just looks so... meh.

I swear to god what is their deal in not showing any new stages. Is it literally only Park Avenue? Since he is using the Phantom Ruby I'm kind of hoping the Hard Boiled Heavies show up since [sp]they never died[/sp]
In the story trailer classic sonic shows up for all of 1 shot and it's just him >:C at the camera. He's never addressed or anything. Why the hell is this boy even here
In the story trailer classic sonic shows up for all of 1 shot and it's just him >:C at the camera. He's never addressed or anything. Why the hell is this boy even here
Because Sonic is now his own supporting cast, now play Green Hill Zone again.
