• Star Citizen Megathread - Star Marine isn't doomed after all!

I remember when they did this in All Points Bulletin. It was actually pretty amazing hearing people talking to themselves, swearing in frustration and the like. As for immersion, it doesn't provide that. You'll mostly hear guys with music on or babies crying in the background.
It would just be a matter of time before a bunch of people calling themselves 'UEE Radio' would just spend everyday micspamming music and stuff.
So, I have a serious question. Was he actually born with the last name 'Smart', or did he have it changed later in life to fit his ego?
My grade 4 teacher's last name was "Smart" so we had a Mrs. Smart.

This person came up with a totally fictional feature Star Citizen could have (But won't because it's a stupid idea), and then appears to have gotten upset about it. Am I following so far?

It was originally designed for Xbox 360, where if you don't want to be on voice chat, you unplug the chat headset from your controller, and this feature was ported unchanged for PC. I once made a freeride session listen to my side of the Skype call I was in for five minutes before I realized I was broadcasting. :v:

"I'M RICO THE PECULIAR," you sure are buddy.
At least there aren't any squeaking fursuiters.
Barry Smart could do a promo vid too
At least there aren't any squeaking fursuiters.
I wish to erase that memory If I encounter them online I will blow up their ships No choice
blow up their ships, hunt down their escape pods, execute the prisoners, burn their worlds
imagine searching around a system in a herald, and after some time spent traveling around to triangulate the location of a distress beacon and slowly closing in on it, you finally decypher the signal and it's just incoherent squeaking into a microphone
imagine searching around a system in a herald, and you locate a distress beacon, and it's just incoherent squeaking into a microphone
That's when I get on the Mobi to call in my Retaliator and mark the wreck for a torpedo.
imagine searching around a system in a herald, and after some time spent traveling around to triangulate the location, get closer, and listen into the output of the beacon, and it's just incoherent squeaking into a microphone
If I'm not carrying anything important on-board that can't be transmitted, my Herald is now a mass driver piloted by righteous fury. My mission is preordained. All that remains is to find the target and line up a clear trajectory.

Does anyone else still think back about, "if we got that planet, where would of things gone?"

On the other end of the spectrum https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xw8lHMCm2Lc Don't worry, he's merely pretending :smug:
elix you're like a walking talking [read more] option
It's good, though. If you've been out of the loop for a while and want to get a feel for where the development is at, you just find Elix, and you can be reasonably certain he's kept an eye on things.
so the polaris is going to be $750. cig is delusional. only the most insane Citizens will spend $750 on a ship, especially when it's not a !!LIMITED EDITION!! that they can brag about. i am entirely convinced that this time they won't sell a lot.
I'm fine with it being 750, if it keeps people from buying it. But there will be plenty of people buying it up.

I think most people buying the $750 ships are upgrading from cheaper ships over time, not just straight up dropping $750 on a video game. You could reach the Polaris spending $50 or so every month.
Wait, as in like $750 real life dollars for a digital space ship? Forgive me because I haven't been following this game very much, but are people spending hundreds of dollars for digital ships? Is it because they need the money for development costs?
Wait, as in like $750 real life dollars for a digital space ship? After launch, you won't be able to buy ships with real currency anymore, they'll be obtainable through gameplay instead. But right now if you have a $60 pledge, you can add another $60 to it to turn it into a $120 pledge for a higher tier ship and so on, so you don't have to spend $750 outright. Whether or not CIG needs the money at this point, I don't know, I doubt it, but if people are willing to give it to them, I can't blame them for taking it. CIG has a big disclaimer that's like, "stop, you totally don't need to buy this ship, you can just get it in-game," or something.
Here's the more comprehensive answer, because nothing about this project can be expressed in tweet-sized chunks unless you leave out a lot of important details.
Wait, as in like $750 real life dollars for a digital space ship? Forgive me because I haven't been following this game very much, but are people spending hundreds of dollars for digital ships? Is it because they need the money for development costs?
The majority of backers only have a simple Aurora MR package. Anything above the bare minimum is entirely optional, but this is how they've crowdfunded almost $125 million and counting, putting them into the same neighbourhood as GTA V in terms of development budget. Their original goal was a modest $2-6 million (with private investors lined up ready to invest until they had ~$20mil total after proving the market with their crowdfunding campaign -- that they ultimately didn't need), but by offering people the option of supporting the project more, they have. The game would've been much simpler and less ambitious then, but thanks to people choosing to spend more than the minimum (the average is roughly $95/backer) they've been able to go the extra mile in scale and ambition. That has its downsides, like extending development time, of course, but that's another topic. Some people really are just that fucking rich that they can afford to drop $10k on a Kickstarter and not give a fuck. Those people are in the very grand minority, however. It's also worth noting that the devs could milk the fanbase a lot harder and don't. Ship pricing is a complex (and unknown) balance of how much dev time goes into making it (which is directly a function of how fucking large it is, capships >>>> single-seat fighters), how powerful and capable it will be (balance), and how rare they want it to be (balance, also flavour/lore restrictions). The Polaris replaces a ship that was supposed to be roughly 125m long and act as a large cruiser/subcapital ship, so the pricing's not really too insane considering how large it'll be. As much as it may seem like an insane P2W situation to be selling $750 for a digital item, it needs to be emphasized that pledges above the base package are ways of supporting the game's development, not buying power. In fact, it is emphasized on the website every single time there's a new or returning limited ship sale:
Remember: we are offering this pledge ship to help fund Star Citizen’s development. The funding generated by sales such as this is what allows us to include deeper, non-combat oriented features in the Star Citizen world. All ships will be available for in-game credits in the final universe, and they are not required to start the game. The goal is to make additional ships available that give players a different experience rather than a particular advantage when the final persistent universe launches.
There are three major factors in-game that should mitigate the P2W aspect of being able to spend cash for ships during pre-release (the ability to buy ships other than the baseline packages goes away when the game hits beta and permanent ship earning's turned on): - Chris Roberts hates grinds in video games and says that ships should be fairly easy and quick to get, and not your typical Asian cash shop F2P hell-grind. A rough estimate was 20 hours of gameplay to earn yourself into a Constellation -- which is not bad considering the Connie's pledge price is $250-275 (the luxury $350 Phoenix variant has special considerations and doesn't count) or $150 if you go for the stripped-down cargo mule variant. - Multicrew ships have a scaling responsibility factor in that the bigger your ship is, the more people it'll require to run and fight properly. These roles can be filled by hired NPC crew, but they will rarely be capable of beating player skill, and they won't be capable of beating coordinated player tactical cooperation. Mo ship mo power mo problems. - For almost all ships, the stock loadout is shit. The gear is low-tier, not premium, and the idea is that you'll be upgrading your weapons/modules quickly once that's something possible in-game. This also ties into the insurance mechanic, in which your ship is restored with its stock loadout when you have the dirt-cheap hull insurance policy (module insurance, which replaces your after-market upgrades, is said to be considerably more expensive). So, someone who drops a large part of their paycheck on a Connie package and thinks they're the clever one, skipping a large grind over the poor plebs in their Auroras, has only themselves to blame when not only is their Connie not a multicrew death god of pewpew as they expected, diehards will be flying in-game-earned ones around within a couple days (even faster if they pool their resources, something greatly encouraged by the game's guilds, orgs) for $0. That information isn't a secret, although it's admittedly not the easiest thing to find. If there is anything I will criticize CIG over more than all else, it's that they are terrible at keeping their information in any sort of accessible format. Tons of information is generated by the project every week, and the newcomer has little hope of finding specific details, such as the fact I dropped a few paragraphs up about the store closing.
