Star Citizen Megathread - Star Marine isn't doomed after all!

So I was so pleased with one of the lines given to another character in the Star Citizen CryEngine fan film I've been cast in that I decided to try recording it myself, just for fun. This is Captain Hayes, a navy fighter pilot and the commander of Garuda Squadron. My own character is a Sergeant Brooks of the UEE Marines - A more gruff man with less of Hayes' regal bearing.

I think I'm getting better, little by little, with every new thing I do. What do you think?

The writer claiming that "rabid fanboys" are "calling for his head" because he didn't know that he used gaming industry code words for "cancelled" when he said "delayed indefinitely" is proof that he's just as petty as the "fanboys" he's knocking on when corrected.

Starting at 45:34, the PCGamer podcast discusses Citizencon and makes a pretty balanced assessment imo. (linking to their article to direct traffic where it belongs, they couldn't resist comparisons to NMS but considering the demo it was inevitable and they don't get clickbaity about it)
Bonus points: The in-depth Kotaku UK article that covered eight months with interviews with Chris/etc. and covered the ups and downs is directly referenced as blowing away most of the "mystique" surrounding the controversy on the game, and they're confident that SC isn't some kind of scam, it's nothing more nefarious than an ambitious game project being developed by a quickly-growing company full of people who occasionally fuck up as is normal for humans.

The Citizencon demo Ursa's tire didn't always fall off properly. That got smashed.
Also, I hate prolonging discussion of shithead any longer than necessary but I can't let this go unanswered.
derek has replied:
The hilarious part is that, they were using a third-person camera controller - not connected to the flight dynamics - to fly the ship. That camera was a debug camera for visualizing assets as seen by the player; not for flying the ship or controlling the PC. Why? Well, the game does not, and never did, support third-person.
So I removed it and put it behind a dev-only cheat code. Problem solved.
Anyone who has spent even 10 mins in the game, knows that the flight model is just fine.
:v:
That bolded text is a blatant lie. He's making shit up to cover up his incompetence. The in-cockpit flight experience at the time this video was captured was identical -- a debug camera with a vertically-mirrored cockpit texture slapped over top. Same over-rotating elevation ladder, same physics. Third-person has been promoted as a game element for as long as LoD has been on Steam until earlier this year, after that video was uploaded showing his shoddy work. Want proof?
Derek gets called out:
[t]https://i.imgur.com/okw3aVr.png[/t]
The archives check out: Line of Defense's Steam Store page 4 days before AlexF corrected Derek, including this bit.
Players wage war as infantry characters in either first or third person perspective with the ability to use assets such as land and sea vehicles, planetary and space craft.
Despite Derek's insistence that the wording on the page was fine, after being corrected the store page was quietly edited.
Players wage war as infantry characters with the ability to use assets such as land and sea vehicles, planetary and space craft.
The Internet Archive also remembers LoD's store page as of its "release" in September 2014 (reminder that it was initially due to release in 2011 after being announced in 2009), and guess what it says?
Players wage war as infantry characters in either first or third person perspective with the ability to use various space, air, land and sea vehicles.
His claim's ridiculous on its face when you see this video of his trusted right-hand man ShoHashi, who's a forum mod on his Steam forum, get into a vehicle and it get thrown immediately into third person.

I can't point you to the current state of the store page because LoD is no longer available for sale on Steam, having reverted to a "closed beta" status after being on sale in Early Access for two years with as high as $99.99 USD for microtransaction-package DLC being offered on day 1 of EA. : ^)
The store page is gone but the trailer's been copied elsewhere, and there's only ever been one trailer on the store page. This was still on the Steam Store page as late as 2016 despite saying "Summer 2012" at the end. :v:
Derek's own server status page will tell you that one of his two game servers and its login hosts is down. US-WEST-01 has been down since the end of April, coinciding almost exactly with Line of Defense's disappearance in the Steam Store. Derek claims the removal was voluntary and guided by him, and I can't prove otherwise,so we'll go with intentional. However, US-WEST-01's downtime was explained as simultaneous failure of two hard drives. As the downtime stretched into months, Derek then claimed that the iDRAC controller (a Dell server maintenance system) on the server failed.
As we approach six months of continuous downtime and US-WEST-01 being as good as dead, Derek has been unable to produce a convincing explanation as to why he and his alleged $200 million in worth have been unable to repair a single fucking server, especially considering that if he had a service contract with Dell, like any developer running a server on Dell server hardware should unless they're literally too poor to afford that shit, it would be repaired within a week unless it was in the middle of a war or natural disaster zone. Derek claims to have spent $20 million on the development of LoD.
I'm pretty sure I could do the same in a month with Unity 5 and a $10,000 budget to hire freelancers for art assets and shit.
Don't you get it, he couldn't get the 3rd party contract so he's trying to get into the game as the canonical version of Satan. kiddin
Lol 2 hard drives failing at the same time on a single server
What were they running in RAID-0 or something, aka the single worst mistake a server admin could ever make in his entire life
Oh wait I know who would do that
Something akin to the Wasteland gamemode for ARMA would be pretty fun in Star Citizen, it already seems to lend itself well to shenanigans (at least if that post is any indication of common gameplay :v:)
I defeated a Super Hornet in my Cutlass. Maybe you just suck. :^)

This week, RtV and AtV trade places. RtV is a pre-filmed panel of Chris and Erin Roberts, Tony Z, Brian Chambers, John Erskine, and host Eric Kieron Davis, answering questions from backers asked after Citcon. Because they got the studio heads under the same roof and this is hard, it isn't live.
AtV is due tomorrow and is sort of "the story of Citizencon", more documentary-style than normal.

tbh as much as I dislike the dorito we could have gotten a whole lot worse
its a lot better than most of the ship designs in sc, less planes more like this please.
Maybe my taste is weird but i much prefer solid, coherent looking shapes even if they end up being a bit boxy to more disjointed fragile looking things like the connie.

Halo still has some of my favorite ship designs and the human designs reflect that ideology perfectly. Big, simple, and utilitarian. The human ships are basically giant guns with starships built around them.
Is there anyone here creative enough to design a "REDACTED" version of a smiley about the same size as this: :bullshit:
I don't think I can see the writer from his high horse there, he truly is above all us uncleaned masses and our opinions. I agree with him for the most part but delayed "indefinitely" pretty much always carries the connotation that something's been shelved or cancelled, as opposed to just been pushed back slightly.
No it doesn't.. it's the opposite of "definite". The release date has not been defined. It is not definite. It is indefinite. It doesn't mean forever, it literally means "we don't know" and we don't. There is no date.
Yeah projects with no set date for release often tend to disappear. But I'm sure that won't happen with Squadron 42 right?
It's cool though author changed it because people were mad. Good job everyone!

In the tech industry, it's specific slang for "dead". Trotting out the dictionary meaning is pointless when talking about slang.
I'm not defending any shitty behaviour by fans, but his only defense is claiming ignorance about what "delayed indefinitely" means in tech contexts, which slightly undermines his credibility.

it's impact
I've been seeing all of this discussion as of late about the game, and thinking "wow, wish I could run it right now"
despite the fact that I upgraded to a 1070 2 weeks ago. and distinctly remember thinking, "hey, I can finally update and give my reliant a good spin!"
how i forgot that my 570 is no longer my GPU IDK but honestly its a miracle my head is attached to my shoulders or I would've lost that ages ago
[editline]14th October 2016[/editline]
oh god that client size CIG delta patching pls
soon™
[editline]14th October 2016[/editline]
spin is right, the reliant's handling is all kinds of fucky rn
Maybe something more animated.
Not epileptic-inducing level animated but also not a single frame - maybe with a border.
Awesome stuff though!

This month's subscriber hangar flair is the Mustang Gamma. The only one not yet a model now is the Omega.

The wait is on for the special post-Citcon edition of AtV, now.
In shithead news, [sp]he just got banned from the Frontier Dev forums where he's spent months been shitting up their SC thread as if it was an extension of SA. Unknown if perma.[/sp]
Does anyone know why using that little offline mode trick with Cheat Engine causes tons of assets to be replaced with red "REPLACE ME" spheres? I really enjoy just fooling around in that mode, so its unfortunate that things are broke. My internet is unreliable at best, and all the storms here mean that its likely to go down too (along with power, but I want to hope that maybe that will stay up lol)
The new consoles for crew members are awesome though. Ships and stuff still work, just random assets are broken. I'm going to walk my dog then get back to exploring other ships, Vanguard was super neat to look at and Starfarer is a must-see ofc
Probably breaking tons of relative asset paths when you overwrite the arena commander map with Crusader.

I was very disappointed when I zoomed in and saw that it's a shotgun and not a giant red spinfusor. :frown:
Why is every gun stupid.
that gun is so close to cool: nice profile, cool but vaguely practical p90 mag, slick ammo counter... but the front end is such a mess
I mean what even is this, a magazine fed, pump-action, double barrel shotgun? pick one of those three things
