Star Citizen Megathread - Star Marine isn't doomed after all!

In the 30th century, 20th-century cultural conventions have diffused so widely that either name would be appropriate for that.
Or even naming said weeb viking Ishida Johnson.
The Consolidated Outland guy's accent sounds like a mix of refined old-era Southern USA and contemporary Australian. It's a big fuzzy mixed bag in 2945.

I keep trying to download the PTU and it just refuses to start the download
Okay, so got to try out 2.0.0h out, I was able to actually dogfight without issue. My ghost was able to mop up most the pirates.
But at the 2nd Comm Array I crashed.

Does your connection fuck with or outright block torrents?
Man 2.0 looks like it would be so much fun if the game didn't crash every 5 minutes.
good thing it's being run into the dirt five ways to sunday before releasing it to public
also god damn check this out

By the way, I decided since ive got lifetime insurance for my aurora that I would upgrade it to the LN for a bit more fightyness.
Payed for it but how do I actually do the upgrade, is it something I need to do in the live hanger?
If you bought upgrade you should have it in your account hangar page. You just have to apply it now here:

So finally managed to get as far as launching my ship, I was flying around looking at other peoples ones and I get "server full"
But im already on it
Is it a common issue for the contacts option to not appear on the universe list? Tried both ways, but neither of us appears to each other during load or even after.

This is why 2.0 isn't live for all yet. :v:

Uh, I don't quite understand what the problem is. Forgive the redundancy, but here's what you do to join sessions together...if you're doing this exactly as described, point out where the system fucks up and derails you from completing it successfully:
1. From the PTU website or by hitting F11 in the hangar (to bring up the contact list), add the other person's handle to your contacts; this must be done by both people. If you're contacts in the live version, you have to do it again on the PTU. Contact lists did not import.
2. One person joins a Port Olisar session.
3. As soon as the Crusader loading screen comes up for that person, the other person should activate the elevator menu/Universe menu copy of the elevator menu; they should see an entry for Port Olisar, and then an entry for the Port Olisar instance their contact just got sorted into. It MAY be 16/16 already if the other player was the last slot into a full instance. If this happens, back out of the UI and come back in to get the instance list to refresh and hopefully you can catch it when someone crashes/leaves and get in.
It is not at all ideal right now and CIG knows it; organized party joins should be a thing by the time 2.0 is released to live. The Generic Instance Manager has been under exceptional strain during the PTU since I'm pretty sure the number of backers who want to get into the first "real" version of the game is higher than any previous traffic flood to get into ArcCorp or Arena Commander since the GIM was deployed.
But, things are improving. There was a point a week ago where the GIM was basically too drunk to function and 95% of the time you'd fail to successfully load into the space station and typically would CTD on the Mustang loading screen because the GIM tried to fit you and another player into a single server slot.
Managed to get in yesterday on the first try and performance was actually pretty fucking good. I managed to blow up the pirates around a comm station, turn it on, and fly to the next one before I crashed killing an AI pirate in a Hornet. It's getting there.

This is good. I've only flown 3 ships so far in 2.0, the Hornet, Constellation, and the Merlin, so it's hard for me to say too much about the new flight model with so few points of reference. Either way, the contrast between the Hornet and Constellation is insane and in completely the wrong direction.
I also flew a stolen Retaliator, with 2 other randoms in it, for about 10 seconds before I backflipped onto the landing pad and exploded.
I have to say that the Mustang Omega, of all ships, feels very smooth and fun to fly -- although it is probably still packing the most overpowered thrusters of any ship in the entire game, so it's hardly a good example of the physical model working.
I usually just hop into the Omega whenever I get into Olisar because it has a fighter-like cockpit and a fast entry animation instead of an airlock hatch to fuss with. The Aurora and Mustang Beta cabins have a tendency to clip you up out through the roof when you try and get into the cockpit. Local physics grids on small ships are a bit wonky still.
I still don't have my Connie and Hornet loaners when they're theoretically supposed to be working, so all I can test is the Avenger Titan, 300i (loaner under the old system for my Herald, I think?), Aurora, Merlin (working loaner!), and Mustang handling. And the Merlin's not really fun because leaving Port Olisar to any PoI means doing it the slow boat way. Someone actually did that to fly out to a comm array, btw, proving that the 64bit system is really working. 66000km in ~9.5 hours at cruise speed. They did it using the offline trick, since no way would the servers stay stable the whole time.
I think my account hasn't been updated with the new loaner stuff since I shouldn't have access to a 300i at all under the new loaner matrix. I think I'm going to copy my PTU account over. RIP credit for 4 repro/media contributions to bug reports. :toot:

This is exactly what we've been doing, but with no luck.
Given that PTU access was rolled out to even more people, and GIM has been drunk all week, it's not too surprising, but frustrating. Are you both in Europe? Because one thing that could be counting against you is that currently there aren't any EU/elsewhere servers, they're all in the US, and so ping could be a factor in the GIM matchmaking. Obviously, the limited locations is a temporary thing during testing/development, at some point or another that'll change.
Also, regarding recent complaints about the inaccurate scale of celestial objects (particularly Yela, which is too small to actually become round under real physics) that've come up around here, I saw this comment from a CIG dev who apparently had randomly joined a PTU stream:
Remember that this map is a test map and not the final Crusader map. It does not have correct scales, only ones we are testing for a variety of puproses.
1. Can we make an object the size of Jupiter that holds up - bearing in made that Crusader does not even have our planet shader on - I think we did really well. Just wait for the planet shader.
2. What is a fun size for a playable moon with an asteroid belt with Cruise/SCM mode?
3. What (without our asteroid tech - coming soon tm) how many asteroids can we achieve (not counting all the other asteroid fields in the map)? What is a fun density.
4. What distances are good for travelling at 0.2c?
so, Crusader is 1/1 scale
Yela - how big can we make it with the number of asteroids at the density we wanted, that is - until our asteroid tech comes online
Daymar - size of our moon
Kellin - she is to 190km
So, as with anything, what we see is largely placeholders and not the final asset configuration as the game builds itself from the ground upwards. Can't simulate the universe before you can simulate an asteroid belt.
The Old Man's bio is also up on the SQ42 site.

I'm the other guy, we're both in the same country, was working fine with some other european yesterday, gonna try with him soon to see if that still works.
But oh well, tests are tests.
I have a 350r but i realized i can switch it out for two other ships for 0$:
A Freelancer DUR or a F7C-S Hornet Ghost
I have no clue which one i wanna keep now that i have this info in my mind, as the 350R is built for sanic speeds, the Freelancer is built for Exploration, and the Hornet ghost is built for stealth.
note my 350r is a LTI ship so i wont ever have to pay for another one if it blows up if i upgrade/switch.
if it helps pick out the right one, i just upgraded my aurora LN for a mustang Beta as i really hate the look of the aurora and mainly just use my 350r anyway cuz of it.
hornet ghost is a hornet refitted for stealth. Now that there's actually the aegis sabre, if stealth is your focus I'd lean that way (next time a sale runs around). freelancer is pretty huge and can haul junk. It'd be a pretty safe bet compared to more niche purposes like racing/recon or being stealthy combat tank

My patches arrived too.
And, after copying to PTU, I now have a Merlin, a Hornet, and a.... 300i for loaners. I'm pretty sure the 300i is my Hull B loaner, now. Now, the question is, did someone overrule Lando and Hull A/B owners are never getting Connie loaners, or did someone just mess up and input the wrong loaner into the PTU/2.0 SKU set? I'm hoping it's the latter. I imagine we'll get clarification today, I'm just afraid I'm not going to like the answer. Because it'd be fun to be able to tool around in a Connie. I guess I could apply the Khartu-al->Connie Taurus upgrade in the PTU copy of my account and get it that way...
There's a PTU Issue Council bug report for it, at least.
When 2.0 becomes stable enough, I could turn my Tali back into a Connie and offer it, if no other Connie pilots are on.
I have the Tali, but right now, it's too unstable to get a crew together to use it. Cause with a Connie, you can defend yourself in solo play.

there will be no shortage of connies. Anyone with a big ship aside from tali will have it as a loaner, and of the two I'd still rather crew a tali.
I upgraded my PTU Xi'An Scout into a Taurus and that gave me a Connie; I can do this semi-freely once 2.0 is live since I have a handful of Taurus->Scout CCU tokens and I can get Scout->Taurus tokens anytime.
I decided I was gonna go fly it away from Olisar and then take a good look at the interior, away from the port so I wasn't taking up a landing pad and wasn't likely to crash from the interactions of others nearby. QD'd over to Yela to fly into the asteroid belt for a few screenshots. I heard the sound of QD warp-in after I arrived and quickly hopped back into first-person. Huh, no targets. Decided to turn the Connie a bit and get it pointed at a clear trajectory for some asteroid-driveby screenshots, and then the client CTD'd.
RIP everything SC is a scam refunds bla bla
But seriously, I can't wait for stability. Performance is already kind of there, and has greatly improved from where it was in the previous PTU patches. People would be so pissed if CIG went live with 2.0.0H because of the pretty heavy crash rate and the drunken behavour out of the GIM as it gets forced to take on new peak loads it's never been tested at before. But, it's only a matter of time before most of those problems are solved.
This week's AtV is going to have the rest of the Tony Z interview, including a look at the Levski landing zone (aka Nyx). Wednesday is another subscriber-question RtV, this time with some of the designers at CIG LA. Like this guy:
Hi all! Matt Intrieri, Sr. Technical Artist here. I've been invited to answer a few questions along with our LA Design Team. Our group at CIG LA is primarily focused on the ship and character pipelines. For ships, the Design Team works on Flight, Ship Weapons & Components, Layout and Ship Gameplay. My role has been to program tools for our Artists and Designers that enhance productivity in all areas of Art Creation and Integration into CryEngine. I've also worked directly on the majority of ships we've released, implementing a wide variety of features including Animation, Destruction, Special Effects, Lighting and a ton of other functionality that goes into these complex beasts. I've also put a lot of effort into Optimization & Performance, and I take part in planning what the fully realized ships will be.
I've been awestruck at the collective talent at CIG and I've never been more excited than by the work we're releasing now in 2.0. Looking forward to answering your questions. Cheers.
People better be asking him questions about the Xi'An Scout and its alien flight model and the design compensations for this.
November monthly report coming this week, too. Prediction: 2.0 2.0 2.0 2.0 2.0 upcoming stuff upcoming stuff the teams and studios that don't directly build assets players interact with work hard too guys 2.0 2.0 2.0.
Now that most ships suck at strafing responsively on command, the Xi'an scout being an omnidirectional super strafing ship from Descent can finally make sense and actually be unqiue.
It's kinda interesting how faked that strafing inertia is in terms of physics, but whatever. Makes for better gameplay and at this point I don't care anymore about what's physically right.
i wish yaw was nerfed a bit so roll/pitch was better :(
FFFFFuck no. That's the one thing I hated about Elite. Do that, and you may as well give up entirely on the idea of a physically simulated flight model, which is, frankly, the main reason I'm backing Star Citizen.
better get a refund then
Why? Not like that has changed so far.
I don't see the physically simulated flight model lasting into the bigger expansions of the project. Not that its really needed. Realism =/= fun and Star Citizen's end goal is not to be a 1:1 space simulation. It's supposed to be a playable game, accessible so that people will keep buying into it and paying subscriptions.
Then again, who knows, Im speaking from my point of view and my preferences.
PTU update I is out, now to see if it's any more stable.
welp time to wait 4 hours for the patch to download...
Timed out every 5 minutes still
