in theory, I wouldn't even have a problem with them continuing to sell ships, especially if it was just the standard stock ships that are available all the time atm, because more expensive ships are not necessarily better, just bigger. and often larger ships are more difficult to use effectively anyway, so you're not really paying to win, just paying to skip grind that said, unfortunately they haven't remained 100% committed to the 'sidegrades not upgrades' idea. people starting with a starter ship are going to be at a pretty big disadvantage at launch because frankly the aurora and mustang kind of suck (hopefully this changes as pu features come online). the sabre is also a really egregious example, it's basically a better gladius that costs twice as much

The Gladius is unique among all the ships in that it doesn't really have a gimmick that sets it apart or makes it particularly useful. It had agility over the Hornet, but now assuming the Sabre (Which, by the way, weighs almost as much as the Super Hornet) is going to be agile too, the Gladius really doesn't count for much. It is pretty, though.

I guess. Everyone had fallen in love with Aegis and had been demanding a superiority fighter from them to match the Hornet, and the devs had delivered, I guess. For a superiority fighter that's supposedly lighter and stealth-oriented, though, the Sabre sure does outclass the Hornet in firepower. Let's see if, as the game balancing moves along, the devs unfuck the Hornet a little. Oh, and get rid of the ballistic cannon meta, screw that.
Im expecting them to stop ship sales of existing ships completely on release. But i think its likely they will do it to fund new ships, which may or may not be a problem.

Likewise, I wouldn't mind the optional subscription thing carried on for similar benefits [editline]e[/editline]
With all the fluff about the Vanguard Warden being designed for long-range missions and being full of survival gear, I wonder if it'd be possible to shove some expensive scanners into it and make it a tougher but less advanced exploration ship.

It may be flying long distances but it's going to be because it has a destination to wreck shit up at before heading all the way back home again

The Freelancer is a cargo hauler; the Freelancer DUR is a explorer - at the moment, the only visible difference is that the DUR adds a long range scanner and a jump drive. So is the Vanguard going to lack whatever 'slots' scanning equipment and the like would go in, or is there something else exploration-dedicated ships require?

Short answer, yeah, you'll be able to add scanning equipment to it, but it's not going to be nearly as good an exploration ship as the purpose-built platforms.
It's be interesting if transactions were taxed, and the tax money would be redistributed as daily login bonuses. Not having to login could be an optional subscription reward.

EVE is fine and all as a game itself, but there is a freakishly large disparity between new and old players than makes it downright impossible for a new player to ever "catch up". There will always be skills a player that simply started earlier will have that make it an uneven playing field. I really dont want to see that be a thing in SC. You should be able to catch up to someone if you put in more effort than them.
Well, there won't be a formalized RPG-like skill system in SC. Your capabilities will be instead determined by the ships you have access to and what your faction standings are. For example, in order to legally bounty hunt, you must be in good standing with the BH guild and abide by its ethical guidelines, and you're probably not going to be bringing down any major targets in an Aurora ES (but if you're just that awesome you still probably could). No "bounty hunting skill" needs to be unlocked; instead, you need to be capable, and to have earned and not lost your license. Matters of skill (like piloting, fps aiming/tactics, mining, etc.) are based on preparation and raw player skill. You won't get a discount on shop prices for having a high speech/trade skill, but it's possible that you might get a discount in XYZ shop on ArcCorp if you are highly ranked in the bounty hunter's guild.
Any of ya'll have experience with a 970 in SC? I'm about a week from ordering my build and I'm gonna toss one in there, at least till the pascal cards make their appearance. Be nice to have a ballpark
The game runs surprisingly well on my 570+2500k Do think I'm going to re-overclock my 2500k. I had it up to 4.7ghz since I bought a fuckhuge dual-fan CPU cooler (it was on sale for cheaper than everything else, lol) but a BIOS reset wiped my OC and since so few games seemed to be CPU bottlenecked I never bothered to redo it (besides not playing video games anymore). I still want a 970 or whatever the equivalent in the new line will be, the -70 level always seem to be the best choice choice in terms of price/power and I need my sweet sweet rift-capable power for this summer [editline]2nd January 2016[/editline] my guilty confession is i could have bought a 970 but after buying a new pair of boots and a jacket I'm out the $300 a 970 would have cost :v:

msi 970: decent 60 fps at 1080 in arena commander, lucky to get 30 fps in crusader. plenty of occasional stutters and freezes
oo, when is the new series being announced? I forget, is nvidia on a 1 year cycle or 2 year?
Supposedly it's gonna be around summer time. Was asking around in one of the PC build circles and it was mentioned. that's when i'm upgrading then [editline]2nd January 2016[/editline] gtx 580, your time draws near
that's when i'm upgrading then [editline]2nd January 2016[/editline] gtx 580, your time draws near
I'm going to have a noble funeral for my 570 it's done a damn fine job
I'm going to have a noble funeral for my 570 it's done a damn fine job
Been running a 780, which is starting to show its age. Be aware that optimization when other players are around is pretty bad atm In Arena Commander I get around 45-60 FPS regardless of who's playing. Crusader and Olisar I get 45-60 FPS when there's nobody around, or just one or two people. When more join my FPS can drop as low as 15-20, even when they're not nearby, it's bad.
i was wondering how i was going to build a med-high 60FPS star citizen capable rig in 2016 for less than $2000, considering the 970 is only like a 20-30% improvement over the 6 year old GTX580, but it looks like new architecture is the answer. this time i'll be sure to not put 1/3 of my budget into the GPU though. the 580 has trucked along for far too long, but I can't think of a single game that i've played a lot since i built my computer in 2010 that was considered "GPU heavy." Games get the labels either "balanced" or "CPU heavy."

I've used a 580 before, and the difference between that and my 780 is like night and day, there's no comparison whatsoever. And the 970's even better than my 780. If I were to give you a ballpark figure given my actual experience with both cards, the 780 nets me at least twice the FPS on average than the 580 ever did.
The 780 and 970 are pretty on-par though... I'm just looking at "dumb" bot comparison sites, I've not put a lot of energy into researching yet, but they give pretty objective understandings of power. Your perceived performance gain over the GTX 580 is going to be a lot more than the actual power difference. http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-970-vs-GeForce-GTX-580
the doubled vram alone would elevate the 970 miles above the 580 for star citizen
