Star Citizen Megathread - Star Marine isn't doomed after all!

Be Chris Roberts.
The Retribution-class is storyline-only, and if I had to guess we probably won't even see it operational during the first SQ42 storyline, but in the second (Behind Enemy Lines) or the third, unless construction finishes faster than any military contract has any right to.
Be Chris Roberts.
Welp, now to kill Chris Roberts and then become him.
Well it's going to be a bug then, I can't log in to my account that I've made even with a copy-pasted password for some reason.
So, given that I'm getting a new video card in the next few weeks, and just realized that the Mustang Beta has a goddamn SPACE CAMPER, it looks like I'll actually be getting in on this internet spaceships thing soon.
Am I dumb for wanting the SPACE CAMPER VAN (!) over something useful like an Aurora LN?

Are you logging in with the right ID? Your account login is not the same as your visible handle (e.g. orison for me).

No, not if you want to explore and plan on slightly longer journeys. The LN is a combat ship, but it's not specifically more "useful" than a Beta unless you specifically are looking for weaponry (and the Beta has almost as much weaponry as the LN, but no missiles).
Disclaimer: I have a Beta.
as I said before the LN package saves you $5 over all other packages since the "package" component is $10 rather than $15; buy that and you can upgrade to the Beta (or anything >$35) later
the new patch is extremely stable, other than the memory leak that starts being an issue for me once i've been ingame for an hour. FPS issues aside, its great. Had a large multicrew battle near the security post then landed, grabbed a rifle and hunted down a few other players.
The Retribution will be the played owned Idris and Bengal killer, to be able to keep some control over the players.
Well it was fun while it lasted, getting constantly the "un-localized error" whenever I try and join the universe, time to spend 2.5 million years verifying files
Try ArcCorp, and try again in a bit, the GIM might be gagging on its own dick again.
But man, this patch was a huge leap forward in stability.
I just hope we do not see an exact repeat of AC 1.0's disastrous Christmas rushed release. It's been on the PTU long enough to avoid the worst of AC 1.0's matchmaking nightmares, but PTU testing for 210k is not the same as live release to 1mil+.
Fingers crossed that this week is miracles from CIG/F42 and everyone can play 2.0 for Christmas, but don't hold your breath.
Also, on Reddit someone had a studio visit to Austin and got to see what's being shown on the 3-hour holiday livestream next Wednesday. Apparently it's insane. Dude is NDA'd, of course. Rumour is the planet shader and asteroid shader will be shown and look great.
If it's Terra I will lose my shit.
I don't know if this has been posted here before, but you can actually share your hangars so you can fly ships you don't own in AC/PU (only works with the offline PTU for obvious reasons). I posted it in /scg/ but appart from me and another guy no one else is willing to share their $1000 virtual hangars, so i will try here if anyone is interested.
And before i get mauled because "muh account stealing", this method is totally safe and it only tells the game what ships to load in, no account details or passwords are shared.
-HOW TO USE THIS SHIT-
I'm assuming you already did the "Offline PTU" stuff from the reddit thread, so I'll skip that part:
1. Go to the non-official StarCitizen folder (the offline PTU one).
2. Open the loginData.json file with any text editor.
3. Replace the line inside it with any of the ones provided below.
4. Launch Star Citizen using the Bin64/StarCitizen.exe (Don't use the launcher, it will start the official version with your hangar instead of the one you wanted to replace)
Killstr3aKs: Retaliator, Avenger stalker, Aurora LN, P52 Merlin:

I made a pastebin to keep track of all shared hangars (yeah, i was actually expecting generosity on 4chan) so if anyone here wants to contribute just post the stuff in loginData.json and i'll add it.

Next week is more godly than Christmas.
Star Wars, SpaceX, and now maybe Star Citizen?! *waves fan*
PTU and server were stable enough to spend a decent-session reactivating com array, dogfighting, colliding my ship and investigating signal beacons with very little stutter bar a handful of moments. Everything came together so disturbingly smoothly.
Got on a connie with some random dudes flew around landed it and watched it blow up. Stole a tali and flew around for a hour or so until it took too much damage (the repair was bugged for some reason). Pretty stable so far but the FPS and stutter is bad with mutli crew ships.
Also you can add my Gladius and Super hornet to the bin since you don't have a SH on it yet?

Added, thanks for sharing. I wonder if the offline PTU trick will still work after 2.0 goes live.
I'm curious. With the "Fly free" promotion, I know the game provides a ship for me to try out. What happens if I buy a package right now? Will the free ship be replaced by the one I purchase, or can I still try out the free one?
I still haven't been able to try it out (yay for having a 2 year old toddler terror!) but after doing my research and all the awesome answers you guys have provided, I'm sold. I was just going to go ahead and buy the package now, but I didn't want to miss an opportunity to try out a different ship.
Also... I got sucked into the official SC youtube channel last night, are there any other channels you guys suggest that might be a great place to go for great videos, whether they are talk shows, game play vids, preview shows, etc, whatever.

Free Fly should give all members the ships to try out.
So you should get the 3 to demo, plus whatever you buy.
Well then... time to buy that LN package!
EDIT: Does the starting 1,000UEC take time to add to my account? It's not showing on the internet portal. Obviously, I'm not in a rush, just curious.
Starting UEC is held until the game goes live, and it's to help pay for incidentals like landing fees. You won't want to spend it now anyways since 1000UEC doesn't buy you anything except a poster or a basic ship equipment piece you can't get a refund on (right now, at least; once the game's live you can obviously buy and sell game equipment freely).
I'd still wait to try the other ships because you might just lose access to the free ships in the current promo. But honestly if that's a problem you can create a second free account and piggyback the one install on the two accounts.
Buying in means you'll get to explore ArcCorp though, and that's a treat if you've never been. (It's only interesting for so long, but at least once.)
The official SC channel is the home to all their video output, and it's a significant part of their news output. I can't think of specific channels that would be a better source than it, in general.
There's a series on YouTube called Flight School, though, and it covers teaching you how to fly in SC, since zero-g 6DoF is not a super-common flight model in games.
Just looked up ArcCorp, sounds awesome.
Also, reading the post about it on RSI (from August) and the persistent world stuff sounds pretty darn cool. I need to catch up to see what has been implemented since that post, but some of the stuff they talk about, like Nyx, seem awesome.

look up anything to do with "2.0", it's currently in a closed beta test before releasing to public but should be out soon(ish)!

I'm pretty sure they're going to show off Nyx at the holiday livestream next week. It's the next landing zone that we're going to have access to, according to plans. Since the August post on ArcCorp, ArcCorp's had a single expansion update that's added more room to the place, but no new shops. The Area 18 expansion removed the buggies from the main area and into their own demolition derby arena, so you're fortunate(?) to have been spared this chaos:

Thanks for being my first recruit to buy in, Roninjinn. <3 (btw no pressure on the other people who've signed up but not bought a package)
Hnnnggggh, if they go live by end of day Monday, they win. I don't even have to mention why.
Sure thing Elix! Pretty cool that I'm the first! I have to say, it is solely based on all the information you've passed along. You literally sold me on the game. It's been installed for two days, but I only got as far as approaching the ship in my hangar and the "open" prompt before I had to log out and haven't had a chance to truly explore anything yet. So it wasn't even due to the free flight promo.
I'll probably try to watch some of the Flight School stuff today and if I have any luck my daughter goes to sleep when she's supposed to and I get to finally boot this bad boy up! Excited that I'm now the proud owner of an Aurora LN and a temporary owner of an X55 HOTAS to really get into this game.
After I bought in, I had to send a thank you text with a photo of the ship, to my mom. I said thanks for buying me my first spaceship, since she gave me the gift card for my bday, and she got a kick out of that.
If you can schedule some time (say, after your kid's bedtime), a few fpers could probably join you for a free flight session online and you could try out our different ships. Doesn't have to be tonight, but in general. 1.3's matchmaking is probably more stable than ever because everyone with PTU access is hitting that separate server infrastructure instead, lol.
Flight's actually fairly easy to learn the basics on, but mastering it is what takes time. (I still kind of suck.)
So, I decided to try and find a specific channel or something that I could link to. I swear there was a specific YouTuber doing a series of organized flight tutorials for SC under that name, in English, but I can't find it. Grakees, a SC streamer, did a few streams with the name, and he's a cool guy and a decent SC player so they're probably worth it (but I didn't watch them so lit judging a book by its cover here). I did find an organized series called Flight School - it's in German. However, there are tons of videos on YouTube teaching people how to fly, quality varying of course.
There is a tutorial in the Arena Commander module that I think you'll like. There's a tutorial NPC that'll lead you, the rookie, through basic flight and combat training. And when you load in, maybe don't talk to him the instant you can, just hang back one moment and see if anything happens (NOBODY SPOIL IT).
I will give you one tip and that is, when taking off, you are going to leave through an airlock. When the door opens above you and the tutorial NPC tells you to get going, you are not in an open tunnel to the outside! Do not ascend with reckless abandon like I did (RIP my ship's vertical fins, that session :v:). Instead there's a second door and you ascend up past the first and the lock cycles to let you out.
Also, be prepared for your stick binds and input curves to feel all wrong and fucked up. Right now the state of a HOTAS user is not a happy one until they get their perfect setup and then export it and copy it to a safety folder outside the SC folders where regular patching processes won't destroy it. Just to get into the game and try it out once, you may prefer to take the keyboard and mouse approach just for setup speed.
I don't use a HOTAS so I'm not an expert in configuring it and such, but other people in the thread do know what I don't.
Two tips in your Aurora LN:
1) Auroras have most of their thrusters pointed vertically, and only a few laterally, and they're mostly fixed thrusters. This means that Auroras suck at yaw turns and maintaining sideways drift control but are great at pitch turns and vertical translation. To execute a quicker yaw turn, roll into the turn. Unlike ED, there is no automatic roll-into-yaw setting so you'll have to do it yourself.
2) The Aurora's a deceptively drifty tug when it comes to making dramatic changes in direction (common in dogfighting). Make sure you learn how to identify the HUD pip that indicates your direction of travel (and the pip that indicates you're facing the reverse of your direction of travel), because it can look like you're going straight forward until you see that, despite you boosting forward at full throttle, your direction pip is still 45 degrees to your left and heading straight towards that approaching asteroid.
Once you've got the hang of the basics, learn how to toggle between coupled and decoupled mode. Decoupled mode is basically the same thing as flight-assist off in ED; your heading stops deciding your direction of travel, allowing you to point backwards and shoot at someone coming up behind you and so on. Because the ships are more maneuverable in general, flying fully decoupled is a bit more practical in SC than it is in ED if you're good at flying, but generally speaking you'll use it to execute faster heading changes in dogfights and then toggle back to coupled flight.
Also, a reminder that, unlike ED, SC models G-force effects on the pilot. You can red out or black out, during which time you have no control of your ship and it just continues forward in a straight line. I've also actually knocked myself the fuck out from a sideways slide that ended in a sudden impact - sideways G-forces affect you as well as vertical ones.

That's great. :v:
A couple questions about 2.0...
Did they fix the freezing issue that people get in AC1.3? (random freezes for a few seconds every minute or so)
Can you fly rental ships in the open universe thing?
It's hard to tell where unresolved 1.3 issues stop and 2.0 issues begin as far as performance goes, because 2.0 has had some terrible performance in some of the PTU patches (but is now way better). It sounds like you're running into the threading problem that this user.cfg helps to overcome.
As for REC ships, right now, on the PTU, yes but only if you earned them in AC in the PTU with PTU REC, because when you copy your account to the PTU it doesn't transfer your UEC/REC or your rented ships/items. But, once it goes live for everyone, yes, the idea is that REC rentals will work just fine.

What elix said, but I want to add that Arena Commander itself (at least in SP, never tried MP) runs amazingly smooth for me on the PTU. Like, so much better than I've ever seen it run before to the point where it doesn't even feel like the hacked together mess that it normally does.

Thanks!
I'm already using a custom cfg which has helped a lot. I just wish I knew exactly which setting causes the stalling.

I'd be up for some Freeflighting whenever, aslong as its not 4-5 AM in Yurop.
