given the flight modes I'm going to say it'll be at its fasted while folded back like you'd expect it to be landing. It's streamlined and only needs to be moving forward. Maybe maneuvers would have the winglets extend out to grant better angles at thrust but otherwise stay folded back to the body [t]http://www.pcinvasion.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/xian-scout7.jpg[/t]
I don't know if you'll be able to fly a Scout through one of those rings in Old Vanderval, not in vertical mode. The Xi'An really seem to have an affinity for flying vertical bars. The Reliant's flat-to-vertical transformation is crossing the barrier, in a way. ...I bet the Reliant and Xi'An Scout coming through the pipeline at roughly the same time is to take advantage of any overlap when doing vertical-sheet-ship flight model work.
If I can (barely) squeeze a Vanguard (without the wings sliced off!) through an MC ring, then the Khartu and Reliant will fit just fine

Also, the quality is shaky theatre handicam bad, but someone uploaded this bootleg of last night's BBC Click segment on Star Citizen. I tried watching it on BBC iPlayer (with a proxy) and what should be this week's episode instead plays last week's episode. Tried out this game today finally for the first time in quite a long while. Everything looks amazing so far and incredibly impressive. I cannot wait to see the finished product - even though I know we have a long road ahead of us. I'm an avid player of Elite: Dangerous, and coming to this, all I can say is holy shit. The controls compared to E:D make my brain implode. I was trying to fly my ship and I just kept becoming more and more confused. The controls will definitely take some getting used to.
-post-
Play in Arena Commander's free flight mode, it's good for practice, and you can do it offline which means you don't have to contend with dicks smashing into the station while you're trying to take off. There is a tutorial in the Arena Commander menu under Electronic Access, but it suffers major performance issues right now because it basically hasn't been updated in eight months. There are lots of videos on YouTube on learning how to fly. Watch out for switching into [pre] from [scm] in the HUD indicator. SCM is Standard Combat Mode and is basically normal dogfighting speed; PREcision flying mode gives you a maximum velocity of 50m/s and envelopes your inputs to be very precise movements - this is great but not something that you want to switch into while dogfighting without noticing. The default key to toggle modes is 'v'; in the large world map (Port Olisar in the Universe menu), another option is added which is, if you hit v and are above 50% max velocity, instead of going into PRE you go into CRUise mode, which is a 3x-5x max velocity increase but your lateral maneuvering is tightly constricted, like a drag racer. These are all functions of the IFCS, the Intelligent Flight Control System that governs user interaction with the flight model. IFCS does even more, but one step at a time. ED's flight model is a lot more like an arcade flight sim of planes in space; SC is a full Newtonian 6DoF model and the ships have much stronger and more responsive maneuvering thrusters, so they're much more agile than in ED. It takes a bit of getting used to but we'd happily help you learn to fly. Bring any questions you have to the thread. You can also join the Discord (link in the OP) where the more active SC players tend to hang out. Right now, not too much goes on in way of organized sessions, but that's because matchmaking's still kind of a shit but the devs are working on improvements because they hate it as much as we do.
There are a few people on the discord as well as various YouTube videos on flying. It's usually not too difficult to get used to. What control device do you use?
I have a Thrustmaster T16000M! I just spent a bit of time playing. Found a friendly guy named Ciberian_Wolf who showed me around and took me flying in his ship. My jaw hit the floor.
-snipperdoodles-
Like I mentioned above, just spent a bit of time in-game and got familiar with (some) of the mechanics so far. He took me around and showed me how to do all of the missions so far. Restoring comm arrays, the ICC mission and also the PI one. He also took me somewhere (not entirely sure where) and showed me where to get the assault rifle to mess around with. Some guy promptly shot us with his ship as soon as we left the station. Ah well. I'll definitely check out Arena Commander to hopefully hone my skills. So far though I can already say I am fucking PUMPED. EVA controls are a bit wonky at times but I got the hang of them, too. When I try to leave my ship to go into EVA, I can't figure out how to actually leave it. I press Ctrl + F to get out of my seat, but in my Mustang Alpha, I can't figure out how the heck to get out of the ship. I kind of just get "lucky" and glitch through occasionally. :P Speaking of which, in terms of ships, how is the Mustang Alpha? The guy that showed me around had an Avenger. Pretty cool looking ship!
The station with the assault rifle where you got killed, that's Security Port Kareah, and it's the designated PVP location in the current map (although everywhere outside of the Port Olisar armistice zone is weapons-enabled and therefore PVP-enabled). It's the only place to get assault rifles currently. The Mustangs with interior cabin spaces are kind of fucky right now, thanks to the very fiddly airlock column. You have to turn to the rear of the ship and activate the Use prompt, and that'll put you in the airlock. Then you look down and activate the Use prompt again, and if you were activating the right one, the airlock lid should pop open and the ladder drop down, and then your character should animate climbing out. <Use> prompts are fucked right now especially in the Mustang Alpha/Beta/Delta, because the vanilla Cryengine interaction system (what is currently being used) uses invisible bounding boxes to determine Use prompts. If you step into a particular box, its associated prompt comes up and activating it will fire off whatever action is connected to it. It's a really basic system and the devs are working on a comprehensive reimplementation of object interactivity, like having different verbs/actions to use on something instead of only one thing tied to the F prompt, as well as completely different handling for determining the selected object to bring up interaction UI instead of the bounding box bs. What makes this particularly fucked up in the Mustangs is that that tiny airlock chamber in the back has to contain two bounding boxes, and in the case of the Beta (with its interior camper cabin in the back) three. The cabins of small single-seat ships are glitchy right now, so, yeah, you'll often pop out of the roof in the Mustang more often than not. The Mustangs are okay but the Alpha's fairly basic (and it should be, it's priced that way and is the companion to the Aurora MR). It's a sporty Porsche hatchback to the Aurora's space pickup truck with guns, in a way. The Mustangs are fairly fragile right now, though, and their current design is fucked up in that the engines are not in line with the center of the ship, and since the flight model is fully Newtonian, the maneuvering thrusters have to be firing whenever the ship is under acceleration from the main thrusters or else the ship would just spin end over end from the realistic effects of the off-center thrust. There's no single "best" ship, however, because the notion is that every ship will have a role it's best suited for, and you'll be able to switch loadouts with what should be a fairly high level of flexibility in most cases, so the 'best' ship for something depends on what you're doing and how you've fitted your ship. So, the Mustang Alpha's perfectly great for some things, but it's not suited for others (it'll never be a good mining ship, but the huge RSI Orion mining platform will never be a good racer, so fair's fair). But, awesome. There are helpful and cool people in the SC community, and I'm glad you had a great time. Certainly worth going into the Port Olisar instance to play with other people like that, but you can also play solo if you want to practice in peace or people are being dicks. You can also have private free flight sessions with FPers in Arena Commander, so you could always see about arranging something and getting some of us along. The Discord's good for that. I entered someone's Constellation and they started shooting me as soon as we got away from the station. They each dumped about 20 rounds into my chest at point blank. Only one bullet actually did damage - to my leg. I got scared and locked myself in the snub fighter and stayed there.

Personal weapons inside ship physics grids are kind of screwy right now. I think there's a bug somewhere where global coordinates are being improperly passed into a local-to-global-coordinates translation thing, or the other way around, or something. After this video ended, I walked into the back, and the random guy that went into the gun turret (that Korro mentions in the video) was there. I emptied an entire clip of my pistol into his face point-blank and he took zero damage and just stared at me. I put my gun away and was like, huh, well, hi, man. Reminder that F42 Frankfurt is working on a delta patching system, but as usual no ETA.

if SM actually becomes a thing the Idris should totally be its own map, with the space around it available for EVA combat too
if SM actually becomes a thing the Idris should totally be its own map, with the space around it available for EVA combat too
AFAIK "Capture the Idris" is still a planned game mode for Arena Commander, either attack/defend or territorial-capture. Either one team starts in space and one starts on the Idris, or both start in space and it's a race to take control of the Idris bridge and eliminate the other team from within. I'm not sure which they'll do, but there's long been the intention to use the Idris itself as a 'level' for stuff. What I want Star Marine to get, after the SQ42 drop, is portions of Shubin (the whole thing would be too huge) as a map.
the way I see it Idris mode is probably going to be similar to what we currently have with Kareah, I just want pure manshootan in the corridors
I'd expect at first for it to be attack/defend, though instead of being fleet vs idris, it'd be large fleet vs idris and small defensive fleet, to 1: balance out how an attack is handled (escorts will SERIOUSLY slow down an assault on a single target), and 2: give people consistent jobs to do, allowing players to spawn as pilots alongside gunners instead of having the gunnery positions fill up and a bunch of players are left to meander around the ship waiting for the fight to come inside.

the top-heavy Reliant interface doesn't sit well with me I sure hope it isn't another one of those ships where you need headlook to read everything but it really is starting to look like one from here they really need to fix headlook, there's a really awkward delay between pressing the key and your view decoupling that kills it
Wasn't there going to be a thing where the ship could also bluetooth a HUD to your helmet display?
that's what's going on with the Hornet rn, go into third person (or just make your head move) and you'll see it they seem to be moving towards panels though, which I have extremely mixed feelings about since you can't even read half of them due to tiny fonts and lack of AA (fucking Aegis) also since they're actually holograms projected over flat surfaces they don't distort when your view does (eg QD) but that's not a huge issue
